Exploring how birthing will take place in the future

In our future, we discussed that once the baby had been designed and ‘ordered online’, the baby would come in the form of a serum and be inseminated into the woman. After discussing with Karin, she wanted me to further expand on this idea, again, looking at a more ‘futuristic’ alternative as insemination already takes place today.

After consideration, I came up with a few different ideas:

- Baby swallowed (in form of pill/drink/food?) - Baby’s DNA vaporised and absorbed by skin - Once the order is placed, automatically become pregnant??? - physically connect to [computer]? device like a usb

Expanding on website creation

As mentioned in my previous post, Karin suggested that for my website I tried to make the designing options more ‘futuristic’. I decided to focus on the ability to design you childs’ personality traits by using a sliding bar to determine the level and intensity of the personality trait. Similarly, for the eye and hair colour choice, I used a rainbow spectrum bar in order for greater option, as well as having colours which are not seen as normal/natural in our current day.

Experimentation - Website Creation

As part of my contribution, I have decided to create a website detailing the ‘birthing’ process in our future world. I used this template from wix.com and began to make it specified to designing your own baby.

The interactive nature of this website allows users to explore and create (literally). After discussing with Karin in class, I need to work more on the ‘design your baby’ page to make it more ‘futuristic’ rather than standard to what is currently available (as in eye colour, skin colour, hair colour, etc)

The future of 3D printing

Through my groups research thus far, we have been focusing specifically on the future of people. An interesting video I came across during my research explored the possibilities of 3D printers printing organs to help individuals needing transplants. This technology not only has the possibility to help the masses, but it also represents the possibilities of the future of 3D printing:

- Printing new body parts? - Break a bone, print a new one? - Print extra limbs??

Research: We don’t need men to have babies?

This article by the Daily Mail states that men may no longer be needed in order to procreate. Scientists have created a new artificial chemical which acts as sperm to trick a human egg into forming an embryo. Any babies born from the process would be female and genetically identical to their mother.

“Taken to its extreme, it could lead to the science fiction nightmare of a female-dominated society where men have little or no role.”

Our group has been discussing a future with no males, so this is really interesting to see that a future with no males is actually feasible and could quite possibly become a reality

Future Birthing Research

Scientists have created an artificial womb which allows fetus to grow and develop as if they were actually inside a womans womb. By exploring these possibilities, it is interesting to see that in the future, there may not be a need for males, or humans for that matter!

Future Birthing?

For my contribution to this assignment, I am focussing on the possibilities of birthing. I found this image of a futuristic ‘birthing belt’ where you can physically see the baby and its growth. 

This image made me think of the possibility of ‘unnatural’ births, where humans can create and see their baby throughout the duration of their pregnancy. 

Furthermore, after seeing this image, I thought of the possibility of ‘growing your own baby’ instead of physically growing and developing it the natural way. Maybe instead of this belt only showing images, this belt could actually create the baby.

Research on Futures

During my research, I came across this website by Wired which explored hat 8 different cities around the world will look like in the future (realistic).

What I found most interesting was the fact that there were only slight modifications which drastically improved the functionality and liveability of these cities. 

For the future of Los Angeles, they stated that the famous palm trees would be removed and instead drought resistant flora and fauna. What is interesting to note is simple changes such as plants and nature can impact the overall urban environment.

The future of music/radio? This new music site not only allows you to personalise your own music content, but it further helps facilitate new relationships. An interesting way to look at the way technology can bring people together in a new way

I came across this video and thought it was relevant for assessment 3. This short spoof shows how the movie Back to the Future (1985) represented what they believed the year 2015 would be like compared to what it really is like today in 2015.

Aside from the comedy element of this video - I found this interesting to see that the way we imagine the future is generally a world which is superiorly advanced, with increased technological capabilities, and new ways of living; when in reality, the future will likely only alter slightly

FINAL WORK Unfortunately, I began setting my final work up in the hallway of COFA (where I intended) and got told off by security and was told the only place I could do it would be this area at the bottom of the staircase…… This wasn’t ideal as there was hardly any lighting and the visual impact of the piece was not as strong as when it is in a well lit hallway but I needed to set it up to showcase my work by the deadline!!! These photos also do not capture this installation well, but due to the lighting, I wasn't able to represent the impact and scale of the installation!! Hopefully, when I present my work in class next Monday, I can set it up where I had intended this installation to go, but if not, I will utilise this space and bring spotlights to capture this piece and enhance the aesthetics. I will post a video of interacting with this installation next.

Experimentation For this experiment, I tried to use pins to secure the string. Unfortunately, this too proved unsuccessful as the string began to unravel and fall off the pin due to pressure. Conclusion: I have been thinking about how to attach the string in a way that will prevent the string from breaking when pressure is added. Unfortunately, I haven't found a way in which I am satisfied with, but this got me thinking of the possibilities that the detaching string could possess. The string breaking when pressure is applied could become a metaphor for what happens to desire and it's values when imposing factors take place. I feel like this will add another dimension to my work, and in a way relates to my first assessment, where I destroyed my poster in order for the outcome to be achieved.
