Hello ! Thanks for bearing with me , I am a Palestinian educator from Gaza whose life is dire and gruesome. Nothing has left for my family except the hope you can support and help us. After 9 months of war we became exhausted, hopeless , desperate , and displaced. Houses and livelihood sources have been lost and gone with the wind. Things are driving us insane and made. The least level of life can't be attained. Healthy water and food have become a dream we need to realize. What worsens our life more is the constant bombings and killings. That is why I am asking in this post to help us survive this unbearable circumstances , moving from hell to safety and peace. Your support can help us be safe and alive so friends you can support us either by directly donating whatever you can or by sharing my campaign links so that generous people can know about our tragedy and pain. Remember your small contribution can make a big difference for the lives of many children whose heath gets worse and worse everyday. Let their life change and let them feel happy through your kind contribution.

Do you have advice for how to remember when to use Kanji versus other kana?
Read. A lot.( ˘•ω•˘ )
It’s unfortunately the only way since in Japanese whether or not to use a kanji generally comes down to style more than concrete rules. But you’re generally safe to use kanji for most nouns and verbs. You’ll pick up on what most people would not write in kanji with more exposure to written Japanese.
As a base of things that you shouldn’t use kanji for (at least in modern Japanese):
Particles
Greetings - In formal writings you can include the kanji, but it feels too rigid for regular conversation. Even in formal writings こんにちは, if written, does not use kanji
いる and ある - You might sometimes see 居る and 有る in formal writings, but even then it’s on the rare side.
The こ・そ・あ・ど sets
Things that are a hassle to write. Which is pretty ambiguous, but for example きれい is usually written in hiragana because 綺麗 is just a monster to write for a quick comment and 御 like in 御茶 and 朝御飯 looks overly formal so is skipped (so you’d see お茶 and 朝ご飯 more often)
And a lot of animals, especially sea-life, have rather complicated kanji so you can usually write them in kana instead.
also (and you can learn this from reading as well), there are times when it feels a bit more feminine to use kana and a bit more masculine to use kanji to write a given word. for example, you may notice men’s speech in manga is sometimes written using slightly uncommon kanji (or just more kanji), like 出来る for できる or 奴 for やつ. conversely, you might notice women’s speech forgoing certain common kanji, like わかる for 分かる or なに for 何. obviously kanji usage depends on more factors than this, but it’s something to look out for! i think people sometimes say hiragana especially feels “cuter” than kanji.
to cite a pretty unusual example, i believe there’s a short story by hiromi kawakami where a talking bear requests that people address him with あなた but specifically while thinking of the word in kanji, i.e., 貴方. whether or not this one is a gender thing is totally beyond me though lol 🐻
anyway, i believe the feminine/masculine impression is ultimately due to hiragana’s origins as 女手 (おんなで) or “women’s script,” invented by upper class women when they were forbidden from learning chinese characters. neat!

learning new languages is so fun, but also hard at some points. i have a 460 days streak on duolingo but it’s not enough, do you have tips for learning languages ?
The best language learning advice is to ditch duolingo. The fifteen minutes that you would spend playing duolingo would be much more useful if it were put to working through a textbook or watching a grammar video or doing vocabulary flashcards etc.
Second the advice of ditching Duolingo! Not only is it pretty ineffective (despite giving you the illusion of progress), it's also got some questionable ethics (not going into it, I'm sure someone else can take that one if they want).
The most effective way - from my personal experience - is comprehensible input. You can type "comprehensible input [your target language] [beginner/intermediate/your language level]" into youtube and, if the language you're studying has some degree of popularity, you should get at least a few videos pop up. Or you can take to your search engine of choice and search "[beginner/intermediate] podcast/tv show [your target language]". Langblrs often have recommendations for TV shows and podcasts and youtube channels too, so go ahead and send people an ask!
Graded readers are also a good way to get comprehensible input. Again, you can search for them online or ask langblrs and they'll usually have some recommendations (or their followers will, or they'll at least be able to point you in the right direction).
Video games can also be a good option if you play them and you have the option to choose the language. But I think they work best from low intermediate upwards.
You can also try following people on social media who speak your target language.
For grammar, again I recommend Youtube explanations or a good textbook if that's what you prefer.
Language exchange apps are also useful for getting feedback on your output. HelloTalk and Tandem are ones I know of (unfortunately some people use them like dating apps though).
Flashcards like Anki are also popular. I think they're good for reviewing in certain situations and I like them when studying for exams, but honestly I've found them to be pretty poor for committing anything to long-term memory. You hear people say things like "I learned lots of cooking vocabulary from watching cooking shows in my target language" a lot, but you never hear them say "I learned a lot of cooking vocabulary because I made a flashcard deck and studied it every morning." Vocab in meaningful context > single words + a translation.
