It’s been such a long time since I’ve used tumblr, but I remember how much it meant to me when I was studying abroad in Ireland and feeling a little remote/disconnected from friends and family back in the States. It was a way to decompress. It was also a little strange to feel like I knew people’s lives sort of intimately without knowing them irl. I’m curious if tumblr is the same place that it was five or six years ago. Do people still find that there’s a vibrant/welcoming community here or is it all branding and marketing ads like Facebook and Instagram too?

The Lord Of The Rings isn’t a World War II allegory (but yes, it is about death). That WWII theory became so prevalent that Tolkien himself angrily wrote a new foreword to the trilogy shooting it down. First, he points out that he started writing the books in 1936, before the outbreak of the war. Then, he carefully points out how, if his own tale is an allegory for real events, it’s a very shitty one:

The real war does not resemble the legendary war in its process or its conclusion. If it had inspired or directed the development of the legend, then certainly the Ring would have been seized and used against Sauron; he would not have been annihilated but enslaved, and Barad-dur would not have been destroyed but occupied. Saruman … would have made a Great Ring of his own with which to challenge the self-styled Ruler of Middle-earth. In that conflict both sides would have held hobbits in hatred and contempt: They would not long have survived even as slaves.

This is honestly the best poster I have found in a while supporting breast cancer awareness. I am honestly so sick of seeing, “set the tatas free” and “save the boobies”. There is no reason in hell a life threatening, life ruining disease should be sexualized. “Don’t wear a bra day,” go fuck yourselves.
