One from the Vale - Elbert Arryn
Helena was pacing in her chambers, as a servant had just come in to inform her that Elbert was seen climbing up to the Eyrie not ten minutes ago. A protective hand went instinctively to her stomach. At nearly five months, Helena had begun to show yet she wasn’t quite protruding from her regular gowns. A few more weeks and she won’t be able to lace them up. Would it be immediately obvious to her husband that she was again with child? Or has he been gone so long that he will barely notice a difference? Helena didn’t know but these thoughts circled her brain like tireless birds until there was another knock at the door.
A picture of her husband formed in her head, and Helena smiled. She would be happy to see him again, happy to have him warm her bed. It had gotten so cold these months, her grief creating a chill that no heat pad could ever alleviate. Elbert might though, Helena had hope. If anyone could pull her out of the blackness in her heart, it was Elbert. It had always been Elbert.
The door opened and there he was, wind whipped hair and all. He looked just like a boy to her now, hair a mess and eyes wild. He looked worried, he was worried. Helena walked towards him carefully, a hand still resting on her stomach as she did.
"You look as if you’ve seen a ghost, love.", Helena said gently, placing a light kiss on his lips in greeting, "Yet I am so happy to see you." The blonde’s smile widened into a grin as she looked into Elbert’s blue eyes. She missed those eyes, and that chin! Soon enough, Helena was chuckling at her own thoughts.
"I guess it’s due time I told you my news.", she said slowly, part of her hoping that Elbert would be as thrilled as she was, "It is good news, Elbert. Please smile for me."
He found Helena in their chambers she looked the vision of health standing there in the afternoon light he had expected a horror. Her words had been so urgent and he had imagined the worst, but the whole castle smiled as he passed face after face.
Elbert smiled as he kissed her hand. Months had gone by, harrowing and blissful months. He had been to Dorne and back and now finally home Helena radiated a joy that he had not seen for a long time. The siege of Strongsong had cast a long shadow as the two had waited powerless to save Elbert's uncle from the grave he had dug for himself and Elbert had grown bitter for it.
She begged a smile of him and he complied. His mind eased as she assured him all was well.
"What is it Helena?" he asked, "what was it you could not put pen to paper?"
He did not wait for an answer, she was safe as was his son, that was the greatest news of all.
In that moment he realized just how much he truly had missed his wife and his home. To be back had made him happier then he had been in months Each new place had brought with it an excitement but only here brought him joy.
Elbert held her in a tight embrace and kissed her on her cheeks and the nape of her neck.
"I've missed you," he repeated as he pressed against her feeling the curvature of her body against his. He could feel a slight stiffness in her abdomen, and then he felt a thump.

Castles - The Eyrie
The winds were terrible. Most of his belongings he left behind at the last way castle to be carried up by the lift. From here he made his way on foot. Up and up and up he went. Navigating the the steep steps with a dexterity he had forged as a child making this very same climb. He was sure of foot and soon he could see the stone walls of the sky cells emerging from the clouds. In the nearest cell he could see the old man they had called ‘Boney Rick’. The man was serving a life sentence since before Elbert could remember. The fourth wall of cell was an open face, the man could face his death when ever he pleased but for more then thirty years Rick had grown gaunt and old.
“Hello Rick!,” he called out to the old man.
Rick opened his eyes and say his Lord climbing the steps across the distance. He waved at Elbert. His beard had grown significantly longer than he remembered. Rick called out to the man but his voice did not carry on the wind.
“Your beard is looking glorious!” Elbert shouted across the way.
Rick put his hand to his ear, he could not hear what the Lord was saying.
“YOUR BEARD!!” Elbert shouted louder touching his hand to his chin and stroking it in an exaggerated fashion.
The man raised his arms up in a quizzical gesture. The distance was too great between them. Elbert saluted the man and began once again to climb. He admired the man’s perseverance. Rick sat year after year committed to his fate. The easy end stood right in front of his face, the sloped floor goading him to take one last flight and yet he sat waiting for the one day a year he was allowed to walk about the castle under guard and eat a real meal. Aunt Lysa had afforded him this gift, she was not as cruel as the castle folk teased to one another.
Elbert threw the door to the Eyrie open and stepped in from the wind. into the lower levels of keep. The first person he came upon was Elenore, one of the kitchen women.
"Where is Helena?" He asked with urgency in his voice.
"Lord Elbert! We were not expecting you for days!" Elenor said surprised to see him.
"And yet here I am. Where is she?" he asked again.
"I have not seen her since breakfast," she admitted, "Maybe she is in her bed chambers."
The woman was smiling her eyes nearly glistening she looked almost joyful.
"What is it? What is going on?"
"Oh dear," she said, "You had better find M'Lady quickly before the wrong person spoils the news."
"What news? What is going on!" he was shouting.
"It is not my place to say!" she said.
He made his way through the castle searching for Helena. What could be so important that it could not be explained in her letter. Perhaps the sickness had returned, or something had happened to Jasper. His mind swam with a whole host of possibilities each one more terrifying than the last.
I have just received word from The Vale. Some urgent matter requires my attention.
My stay in King's Landing was enjoyable but duty calls me away. Have them pack my things quickly.
Go home, child. You have a home, which is more than many can say in these dark days.
"Well, certainly, but isn’t it a little close to hiding behind a mother’s skirts?"
"I suppose so," He said laughing but, the man's words were a slight that Elbert would not forget.
"You’re right, my lord, I don’t think there’s anywhere better to be…..and yes, I can see that you would be with young Jasper at home. Is he well?"
"He is very well," Elbert said beaming, "Everything excites him, so many firsts lay ahead for him."
"Thank you, my lord." Orys smiled at the older man, glancing at him sideways. "Months, in all honesty, but compared to what some have done, that’s nothing, so I’m rather alright with it."
"Well if you must be away from Storm's End what better place to be then King's Landing?"
"I have been away from home for only a short while and I am already eager to return," It was not often that Elbert strayed away from home. He wondered what Helena was doing while he was away.
"Aaaand realising that the primary reason for that’s because of the location, right?”
"Why yes, of course, but why do you think the castle is constructed in such a way? Because an Arryn decided it so."
Orys had watched the lord of the Vale for a little while as he strolled across the throne room, watching the Iron Throne and commenting on what squiring must have been like. Smiling, he replied.
"It’s been quite exciting here, yes, my lord…although some part of me longs for home."
"You were indeed lucky, Orys, to have squired for the King." he said. Squiring for the Mad King would have been less then desirable but the things he would have witnessed.
"How long has it been since you've been home?" Elbert asked.
"Nobody is untouchable, my lord."
"The Eyrie has never been taken, I tell you, never," he bragged.
"Arryn blood has controlled the seat since the castle was constructed. Few other houses can claim the same."
He shook his head, well aware that he wouldn’t. He hadn’t missed it since he’d left for the war, and he wasn’t going to miss it now. But how would Lord Elbert understand? But it scarce mattered, for Symond didn’t care to make him see, nor anyone else.
"M’lord?" He asked as the man started to sing, then realised he was falling asleep. Good. He left his lord’s chambers, finding the song he’d no heard since he was a lad repeating itself in his mind.
~finished~
Elbert eyes wondered around the throne room. The Iron Throne stood upon the dais, a display of complete superiority, a crushing defeat over the old Kings.
"I think it would have been quite exciting to squire in Kings Landing growing up."
