defractumās 2k/Christmas giveaway
Heyyyyy!
I was going to wait until I hit 2k, but I also want to get these out before international delivery dates for Christmas, soooooo itās happening now.
Anyway. As a huge THANK YOU to the entire lot of you, who have stuck with me through many a-fandom and much Discourse, I am giving away these two boxes of beauty products.
But Cass, you ask, what on earth do these have to do Les Mis or Captive Prince or the Foxhole Court? And the answer is: absolutely sod all. I usually do fic giveaways for milestones but given that I have four (4!!!) fic due before Christmas plus two ongoing WIPs, this is just better for my sanity. Also, in my previous job, I used to get many, many random samples. (Not just beauty products. I have about 300 sachets of tabasco too.) So I thought Iād share the love.
Info/whatever:
must be following me, obviously, as this is a thanks for my followers
reblog to enter
will ship internationally to anywhere
must be willing to send me a message w your name/initials and an address

Reposted from something I saw on Facebook
āI just called the House Oversight Committee (202-225-5074) to support the call for a bipartisan review of Trumpās financials and apparent conflicts of interest. It took me two minutes, and the woman on the phone said that they are absolutely tallying calls - the more they get, the more likely the Committee is to demand ALL of Trumpās financial information.
She said that thereās not much time left, as they are out of the office next week for Thanksgiving. And after that, theyāre going to make a decision.
NOW is your chance to use whatās left of democracy to send a strong message and demand change. Please, do this ASAFP. If you get a āmailbox is fullā message, call back in a minute or so - that seems to be the default when lines are busy.
That number again is (202-225-5074). Website here:
https://oversight.house.gov/
āLikesā feel nice in the short term. āSharesā get the word out. ACTUALLY CALLING ACTUALLY DOES SOMETHING.ā
NICE; GOOD; AS IMPORTANT AS CALLING YOUR REPS. I sometimes have an instinctive feeling that I have to stay focused on just one issue or lose the effectiveness of my voice. In some situations that might be true, but itās just not the case when it comes to phone calls. Especially once you realize how easy they are. I have not gotten through yet, but I intend to keep trying!
We can also call committee members directly. Hereās a full list. If your own rep isnāt on there, I recommend going after the following two:
Jason Chaffetz, Chair DC Office:Ā (202) 225-7751 UT Office:Ā (801) 851-2500
and the amazing Elijah Cummings, ranking member: DC Office:Ā (202) 225-4741 Baltimore Office: (410) 685-9199
Thereās a great sample script from @theworsthobby here.
āHello, my name is _____ and I live in _____ and I would like to log my support of the bipartisan review of Donald Trumpās financials and conflicts of interest. Thanks! Have a great day.ā
I did this too! The voicemail kind of kicks in halfway through the spiel so be prepared for that - itās also entirely possible that youāll get a Real Live Human, which is obviously very exciting. But I did this and it was 67 seconds (I timed it).
ETA: KIDS, YOU CAN FAX THEM TOO! THE FAX NUMBER ISĀ 202-225-3974 AND YOU CAN GO HERE TO USE A FREE FAX WEBSITE. SO ALL YāALL WHO LIKE WRITING MEAN LETTERS? ITāS TIME TO GET VICIOUS.Ā
ETA PART 2, ELECTRIC BOOGALOO: it has been brought to my attention that yāall might think Iām serious about writing mean letters. I am not being serious. I think you should write commanding and forceful letters that get your point across and communicate your support for/opposition to whatever issue you are faxing about. But kindly refrain from calling anyone a buttface.
Truly, if itās letters youāre going for, it is time for some blistering articulacy.
āExcruciating politenessā is also a phrase I wish to use here.
Call on the phone if at all possible (and then just be the regular kind of polite, youāre probably speaking to an intern).
But contact your reps, Americans. Put those rhetorical skills to work. And then reblog and tell us how it went!

@HamiltonMusical: Tonight, VP-Elect Mike Pence attended #HamiltonBway. After the show, @BrandonVDixon delivered the following statement on behalf of the show.
Everything movies taught me about archery is wrong. This is a complete mind-blower. 8D
If you are even remotely interested in archery or medieval combat, check this out, itās just great!
OMFG EVERYONE PLEASE DROP WHAT YOUāRE DOING AND WATCH IT RIGHT NOW O_O
HOLY HELL
Not only is this fascinating, there are a lot of images from art history here. It just goes to show that what you can learn from the past isnāt limited to facts you can know, but things you can do.
My favorite part?
He learned this doing research for LARPs (Live Action Role Playing):
Lars Andersen originally started using bow and arrow to fight in pretend battles during Larps (live action role play) events, where he played a soldier in a medieval-inspired army. While Larps can be about anything ā the Danish/Polish Harry Potter inspired larp College of Wizardry (cowlarp.com) recently got world-wide media attention and there wasnāt a rubber sword in sight there ā many Larps take place in fantasy worlds inspired by J.R.R. Tolkienās The Lord of the Rings. And it was at one of these Larps, that Lars started to learn to shoot fast while moving.
In 2012, Lars Andersen released his video, āReinventing the fastest forgotten archeryā, where he showed how he had learned to shoot from old archery manuscripts. Using these old, forgotten techniques, Lars demonstrated how he was now the fastest archer on the planet, and after its release, the video got 3 million hits on YouTube in two days.
Since the 2012 video was released, Lars has studied and practiced, and he is now able to fire three arrows in 0.6 seconds ā a truly stunning feat making him much faster than the legendary fictional archer Legolas (played by Orlando Bloom in the Lord of the Rings movies).
The time benchmark he was trying to achieve, according to the video, was the expectation of the speed at which āSaracenā archers were expected to shoot. In fact, most of the source material as far as I can see isnāt European.
A lot of the techniques described are also used in Mongolian Archery, which requires being able to shoot from horseback, and is traditionally practiced by men and women. You can see a video here.
i keep meaning to look for this video every time I play D&D because of the rules on archery i know the rules are there for balancing combat but my DM also sits there and goes ādrawing and firing an arrow takes 6 seconds and if youāre near someone theyāre gonna try to bat it out of your hand so you have a penalty on attackā and like nah son nah
some things about this election to think about amidst the chaos:
the attack on voting rights (and how that skewed the vote)
the popular voteĀ (i.e.Ā why we have the electoral college and how it screwed us over)
the juncture of poverty, disenfranchisement, and racismĀ influencing the white voteĀ (and how trump actually got the wealthy vote)
theĀ radicalization of white males (and why they kept quietĀ before now)
how the dnc is responsibleĀ and how they are abandoning us now
iām seeing a lot of calls to mobilization, but as a college freshman with no experience organizing at an unprecedented crest in global fascism, what does that look like?? whatās effective? how do we make this a national uprising? leftists whoāve been studying and preparing for this need to step up and tell us where weāre going from here.
Alright guys. Iām pissed as hell that Mike Pence is VP. But can we refrain from calling him aĀ āLizard Manā since that phrase has anti-semitic history.
Hereās some options:
-homophobic cotton ball
-waxen statuette of hate
-literal comic book villain
-ignorant Q-tip
I wish every white person at one of these protests would commit to doing one-on-one relational work with other whites to deal with their racism
This frustrates me because Iām in a very āliberalā academic space and my white classmates are always having lil breakout groups to discuss allyship, meetings to talk about how they can support black and brown efforts and organizing
But they seem to have zero idea how to actually talk about racism to other white people who donāt already agree with them
I was talking to a classmate today who told me he āfelt badā because his parents and siblings voted trump
And Iām just like: whatās the fucking point of doing all this chatting about allyship if you canāt even sit down and reason with the people closest to you.
Why are you always looking to us for a free education on race when you just compartmentalize that shit or use the insights to get closer to other poc
I think I can add something here as a piece of advice on how to go about this:
I work with a mix of people who carry a wide array of political viewpoints. I work closely with a guy in his 60s who tends to lean Republican on most issues.Ā
One day, I was in a car with him and another colleague, around my age. The conversation diverted into entitlement spending and race. Us 20 somethings were on one side of the issues and aĀ 60-year-old white guy was on the other.Ā
After hearing him rant for a bit, I calmly asked,Ā āHey ____, whatās so wrong with those living in the projects getting unemployment benefits?ā I let him answer and then posed another question off of his response. I kept calm and kept letting him speak, then asking follow-up questions. Eventually, he was calm and I could tell he was satisfied that I heard his point and where he was coming from. I also noticed that his views became less and less extreme every time I posed a question. His emotions were subsiding and he was critically thinking about each question. So, I expressed my position of how certain people are exposed to certain opportunity and race plays a major role in exposure. I related to people we both knew. I related to stories of friends that he didnāt know. I asked him, again calmly, if that perspective changes anything.Ā
He kind of grumbled something and we arrived at our destination, ending the conversation.
However, the next day he came in and stated that he gave my position a lot of thought and felt like I brought up a lot of great points. He said was willing to think about these things.Ā
I was COMPLETELY taken aback. I realized that my conversation was effective. I honestly donāt know who he voted for or if there a major impact on his thinking, but something changed enough for him to thank me and bring up a willingness to change, albeit how small.
So I guess my advice would be the following:
1) Have people re-examine their own thinking. Donāt tell them how to think or haw you think. Ask them questions that have them explore their thought process.
2) Relate your position to shared experience. Put a face and a name to the marginalized group. Donāt let them go to theĀ āwell theyāre the exceptionā answer. Go back to 1) and ask them questions.
3) Stay calm. Like 100% be calm. Disarm their emotions and donāt escalate with your own. This gives them an opportunity to think rationally rather than emotionally.Ā
4) Donāt do it to feel good about yourself. Do it because itās the right thing. If you are white/male/straight/cis, you need to do this for those who are not. Keep your thoughts on the marginalized and not making yourself feel good orĀ ānot like themā. This is not about you.
5) On the flip side, understand white poverty and what is going on in the manufacturing industry. Get the other viewpoint, even if you donāt think itās worth empathizing with. Just understand that issue. Keep it in the back of your mind when asking questions.
I honestly donāt know if this will work in every circumstance or is enough. I feel like I made a change in someoneās way of thinking. Ā I thought it was worth sharing.Ā
Thank you for this.
When Obama won, the right threatened violence and uprisings. They spewed vitriol and simmered in their own hatred and this is what we got.
Today, Iāve had so many conversations with people who are considering and embarking on new paths of public service. People who are talking about law school, public policy, teaching, international engagement, volunteering, even just giving radical amounts of kindness to the people around us who need it. Iām not seeing violent rhetoric or talk of violent uprisings. Iām just seeing a lot of good people saying āItās going to be hard work, and weāll do that hard work because we need each other.ā
We can take our country back. When they go low, we go high.

OFFERING ASSISTANCE to American women, PoCās, queer/LGBTQ folk, disabled people, non-Christians...
I am seeing so many posts from those who are going to fight like angry fucking badgers in the wake of what is looking to be a Trump presidency, and as an American expat who had limited ability to mobilize things on the ground, that is great to see.
But I know not all of you are in that position. Some of you are at risk of literally losing your lives. Some of you are not able to join the war.
I would like to offer my personal assistance in assessing your situation for immigration if you would like to escape America and feel that is safer for you. Specifically, I am very familiar with the British and European immigration systems. This is COMPLETELY FREE OF CHARGE.
Please send me a message if you would like to be added to a list of people I will assist.
I am going to start small, and I will decide on a specific number of slots I can work on at one time shortly.
I plan to start up a new blog for this purpose, as well as reaching out to other activist witches, and using my Discord server to power both this effort, and as a place where those who are staying in the US can plan and congregate.
But right now, itās important that I simply start, so that is what I am doing.
PLEASE reblog! I donāt care how many requests I get (just keep in mind that if it is a lot, I may not get to all of them right away). I want to make sure I have a list of everyone who needs help, and I will try to get through as many as quickly as I can.
Be aware that me assessing your situation will require me to ask you questions about your family, education, work situation, BASIC finances and legal status. However, I will never ask you for any personally identifying information. No name, no bank details, no place of employment, nothing like that ever.
Please be safe and love each other. Fight if you can, reach out if you canāt.
Love,
Germ
Reblogging because I know people who are going to need this.
