Please give me a three page essay on why exactly you love Floch so i can understand you. Because i think heād a little cringe and little more than a useful idiot to Eren, but still, i love seeing different views of characters :0
Iāll try to not make this about Isayamaās intentions when it comes to the creation of Flochās character, because heās explained why Floch exists and why he was "needed" in the story, which I generally agree with, but it isnāt the reason I like him
What Floch experienced in Shiganshina was extremely traumatic, especially because it left him as the sole survivor. This happened to him as a teenager with very limited prior experience, because he joined the survey corps later than our main group. He didnāt have a support network after this, he didnāt have a group of friends like the rest did, because everyone had died.
He was the one trying to "save the devil", crawling through the dirt with a grown man strapped to his body after coming to senses surrounded by the corpses of his comrades.
He did not fall into a deep depression, he did not give up, he did not decide that indeed nothing mattered in the end. Floch did the opposite and pushed himself to the other end of the spectrum by taking full control, accountability and by being extremely proactive and forceful. He just reached out and took the meaning he needed to survive and move on, he looked at the world and decided that this is what needs to be done, and simply did it. He doesnāt back down, heās honest and straightforward to a fault.
After his experience it would make sense to want to move away from the threat, but Floch instead started to move towards it by making it his personal mission to find the right devil to restore Eldia. This is extremely brave, even if you disagree with the sentiment.
The world is unsafe, because it is full of enemies and Floch wants to move towards the threat to annihilate it entirely. He wants to destroy everything before it can destroy him/his nation/his people/whatever he sees as an extension of himself.
He is the founder and organiser of the yeagerists, he recruited them, he orchestrated an assassination, the spiking of the wine and caused a coup dāetat. He built the entire infrastructure beneath Erenās rumbling, stayed absolutely loyal and secretive the whole time and always gave it his all.
Again, you can disagree with his foundational ideas, but the way in which he almost single-handedly managed to orchestrate all of this, without having access to a trusted team of military and political veterans, unlike every opposing group, is absolutely insane.
His resolve is unyielding, he does not stop, no matter what. He gets shot by FaZe Gabi after facing several Titanshifters and an Ackermann and then manages to follow them while almost bleeding out in ice cold water, just for one final, desperate attempt to do what he believes must be done to achieve safety for him and his people.
He accepts that heāll die and his last words are not āhelp meā (like Bertholdt's, sorry) but heās asking the people who just killed him and who are trying to prevent their own safety (in Flochās eyes) to please not stop their devil, their only hope, because if they do, everyone on their island will be killed.
And in the end, he was right. You can say it was better like this, youāre free to think he was wrong for putting his own people over everyone else, but his conviction, bravery and ability to grow from trauma instead of breaking from it are so impressive to me, and all of this while basically being on his own.
