Velia Furlan da Nicolaou (Metaphor: Refantazio) -

The childhood friend of Leon Strohl who was practically raised alongside him after his parents took Velia in as part of an agreement between Leon and Velia's family, which included an arranged marriage between the two of them when they came of age. Their starting Archetype is 'The Witch'.

Joey Andrews (Obey Me!) -

A human who was abducted and then pressed into the Devildom exchange program. Unbeknownst to said human, they are the latest reincarnation of a human that Lucifer fell in love with millennia ago, that was cursed to reincarnate and have her memories suppressed each time. In this universe, Satan is the son of Lucifer and Joey (as is Luke).

A manakete (a dragon in humanoid form) that was hiding out in a small Ylissean village pretending to be human and serving as the communities apothecary. After helping the Shepherds defend her village from a bandit attack, her status as a manakete is revealed and Chrom takes Meri into the Shepherds for her protection.

Gianinna [Nina] (Fire Emblem Fates) -

A mage from Nestra who belongs to the Nestan Order of Scholars, a group dedicated to the recording, collecting, preservation of, and sharing of knowledge. (Basically, they're like an order of monks/nuns, but instead of devoting their life to a god, knowledge and learning is what they're devoted to. Also while some do chose to abide by a vow of celibacy to more fully devote themselves to their work, it's not required.) Nina is recruited to the player's army by either Prince Leo of Nohr or Princess Sakura of Hoshido depending on what route of Fates you're dealing with (Leo for Conquest/Revelation, Sakura for Birthright) under the guise of keeping a record of the Nohr/Hoshido War, but really Gianinna is trying to help end the war and keep Nestra safe.

Euphemia von Lehr (Fire Emblem Three Houses) -

The daughter of a Baron in the Leicester Alliance. She and her two siblings (her twin brother Myron and older sister Irene) were experimented on by those who slither in the dark, with Euphemia being the only survivor. As a result, she bears an artificial crest of Riegan and has become somewhat sickly (though the side effects are less pronounced than someone with an artificial crest who already had a crest to begin with, such as Edelgard and Lysithea). She was originally declared the heir to house Riegan until the appearance of Claude. To Settle the dispute of the inheritance, Duke Oswald put Claude and Euphemia to the test. In the end, he decided both would inherit the position through a political marriage between the two, set to take place a few years down the line. In the meantime, they were sent to the Officers Academy together to prepare for the road ahead of running the Alliance.

Seona Watson (Assassin's Creed (Ezio Trilogy)) -

Fiene Helmi Beringer (Fiene Soriano after the timeskip, when she takes back her old name- FE3H)

Fiene was originally born to her parents in Duscur, who owned a textile shop. However, she was orphaned young and had to rely on her neighbors for care for a time. In the process of an altercation with a passing Faerghus noble family (involving allegedly stolen food), it was discovered she had a crest, and the family decided to press her into the fold (forcibly adopt her), as they had no children, let alone any with crests.

From then on, Fiene was raised as a noble, but experienced hardship in her new life in the form of abuse by her 'adoptive' family and prejudice on account of being from Duscur.

She was befriended by Lord Lonato's family, and they originally arranged for her to escape her abusive home via marriage to Christophe. After Christophe was killed, Lord Lonato's adoptive son Ashe was put forward as a replacement, but house Beringer originally refused the match on grounds Ashe was a commoner. However, when it was pointed out Fiene was also a commoner originally and they didn't really have a leg to stand on with that argument, they reluctantly agreed to the new match.

Love Interest: Ashe Ubert (Betrothed)

A college student from 2012 Midwest America that, via a mysterious force, was sent back in time to 15th Century Italy. Through a series of events, Seona befriends Claudia Auditore and is taken in by Paola, an enigmatic madam running a bordello in Florence. She finds her fate intertwined with that of the Auditore family when things go sideways, and accompanies them when they flee the city as an assistant and protector of sorts. Over the course of a decade or so, she forms an unbreakable bond with Claudia her brother Ezio, the latter whom she eventually falls in love with and marries.

Alice Rask/Doctor Alice van Zieks (The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles)-

The estranged wife of Barok van Zieks, studying to become a coroner in Tokyo. Originally, she and Barok were quite close and the best of friends, and he had saved her from a serial murderer during their courtship. However, the relationship broke down over a difference in views and she separated from him. She was befriended by Mikotoba family (who were friends of her father), and in particular found herself becoming close to Kazuma Asogi. Eventually, she attempted to file for divorce from Barok (after she and Kazuma developed mutual (but unspoken) feelings for one another), but was forced to return to Great Britain to settle the matter.

Love Interest &/or Bestie: Barok van Zieks (Friend and former Husband), Kazuma Asogi (Bestie and Love Interest), Ryunosuke Naruhodo (Bestie)

Mary Shaw (Persona 5) - An American Exchange student attending High School in Tokyo, specifically the same school as Goro Akechi. She develops a very close friendship with Futaba Sakura over the internet, and is eventually acquainted with the rest of the phantom thieves. During the course of her story, she is charmed by Akechi and the briefly enter into a passionate (but very toxic) relationship, ending in the two of them breaking up. Mary eventually joins the phantom thieves as a late edition, awakening to her persona, Jeanne, and taking on a thief persona with a Racoon motif and an aesthetic reminiscent of Assassin's Creed.

Annabelle 'Emi' Nishimura (Ghost of Tsushima) - An American Museum employee who gets possessed by the ghost of someone from the same time period as Ghost of Tsushima, who sends Annabelle back in time to fulfill their last wishes. However, she gets seriously delayed in that task, ending up being taken into custody and then put under the watch of Jin Sakai, the nephew of the Jito of Tsushima. Eventually, the two develop a mutual affection but the Jito turns down Jin's request to take Annabelle (going by the name 'Emi') as his wife. However, after proving herself trustworthy and being adopted by a samurai family (who hoped to gain power by having someone in their family married off to the Jito's nephew), the Jito changes his mind, a bit begrudgingly, allows the Jin to marry Annabelle. But then canon happens and it's fun times all around.

Joella of Macedon (Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon/New Mystery of the Emblem) -

A commoner who was betrothed to Prince Michalis after her father performed a deed of great heroism for Macedon and befriended the Macedonian king. The two grew up together, and become good friends. However, while Prince Michalis fell in love with his bride to be, Joella never developed romantic feelings for him (but cared for him deeply as her friend).

Joey Mcgill (Final Fantasy XV) -

A young woman from our world sent to Eos and given temporary Amnesia upon arriving their by the gods. She finds herself rescued by Nyx Ulric, and later befriend by Noctis and his friends. A freak accident leads her to receiving magic from Noctis, and as a result, she's inducted as a member of the group meant to travel with him (alongside Ignis, Prompto, and Gladio).

Joella Fairwinter (Baldur's Gate 3) -

A half-elven apothecary who lives with relatives and cares for her aging human father. By chance, she encounters Astarion and through more chance encounters with him, ends up befriending him. But things start to get dangerous after she tries to find out more about her mysterious friend, and why he bears a striking resemblance to an old colleague of her mother's. She becomes the target of Cazador, who would see her little investigation ended. However, before he can get the chance to scare her off or kill her, she's abducted by mind flayers. :)

Hideo Miyagawa (Fatal Frame Series) -whom I affectionately call "Ghost Dad"

The ghost of a man who had an interest in the occult. He befriends the supernaturally gifted Miku Hinasake and falls in love with her, and through ghostly means, the two of them have a child, Miu. However, due to Miku's overwhelming grief at discovering that Hideo is a ghost, she goes in search of a way to reach him in the spirit world and be with him. Not wanting to Miku to give up her life for his sake and abandon their child, he tries to dissuade Miku and look after Miu in her mother's absence. Hideo eventually asks for Miu's help in locating and saving Miku from herself.

Joey Merryn Wells (Devil May Cry Series) -

A gifted sorceress who was rescued by Dante from being sacrificed in a terrible occult ritual by her parents. (After a concerned neighbor got wind of the ritual.) Joey and Dante briefly had a thing of sorts, but Dante pushed her away, believing it was too dangerous for the two of them to be together romantically. Upset, Joey leaves. But the two meet up again several years later when Joey has become the wealthy heiress to a known philanthropist and a talented spellcaster. She requests to hire Dante to escort her through a demon infested castle in France so she can purify it and purge the demons, making the castle safe for humans again.

Jane Seagram (Ikemen Villains) - The descendant of Kate and her chosen villain love interest. A villain in her own right, originally from the 1990's version of Crown. After an experimental mishap with her brother's time machine, she ends up in the past and eventually, in the company and care of Kate. She joins crown with Kate, masquerading as Kate's 'Spinster Aunt'.

Love Interest &/or Bestie: Kate (Ancestor, Friend), Ring Schwartz (playmate, potential love interest), Darius Vogel (frenemy, potential love interest), Nice Schwartz (Frenemy, Drinking Buddies?)

Doctor Cassandra Fay (Ikemen Prince) - A custom version of the IkePrince MC who hails from a more modern day version of Rhodolite. A scientist who was helping a team of experts develop a time machine for research and conservation purposes. She volunteered to be a test subject for the time machine, but a horrific error with the machine sent her back in time to the setting of Ikeprince and left her stranded there, with a side effect of temporary amnesia. She's taken in by a bookseller and he wife, and later, helped them to take in Rio Ortiz as well.

By accident, she ends being abducted by a court minister to be Rhodolite's new 'Belle', a commoner appointed kingmaker, to choose a new king after the sudden death of the old king. Cassandra knows who was crowned King in her time, but can she keep history intact when she and the Prince destined to be King begin to fall for one another?

Hollis Peg'asi (Andromeda Six) - The child of Queen Nikolle and King Fenris, and survivor of the coup on the planet Goldis. As a Kitalphan (an amphibious alien species whose home was lost), Hollis had a difficult upbringing and a contentious relationship with their family. They were closest to their bodyguard, and their half-sisters Nerissa and Cerisa. Hollis tend to be guarded and calculating, but ultimately good-hearted, hiding behind a charming and flirtatious mask to protect themselves.

Cerisa Peg'asi (Andromeda Six) - The daughter of Queen Ta'jean and King Fenris, and survivor of the coup on Goldis. As daughter of the Tilaari Queen, Cerisa had a rather lonely and unhappy childhood in her father's court. But she was close to her half-sister Nerissa and half-sibling, Hollis, as well as her bodyguard. Cerisa is shy, gentle, and at times can come across as unworldly and naiive, but is surprisingly wary and observant. Pretends to know less than she does unless she trusts you.

Which sibling initially joins the crew of Andromeda Six differs between two verses (Hollis verse and Cerisa Verse), the other escaped the coup by other means and reunites with the other sibling later.

It's OC Saturday Again

Haven't played the game in a while, but some of my friends have been talking Baldur's Gate 3. I've made several characters in that game, but there's two I consider my 'main' Tavs, and this is one of them (another OC with an alternate backstory to what's possible in canon). Joella Fairwinter is/was an apothecary in Baldur's Gate, and the daughter of Magistrate Lelia Fairwinter. Her mother was a colleague of Astarion when he was alive and working as a magistrate (and decidedly disliked him - she didn't know the extent of his corruption but knew he wasn't an honest or fair judge).

Joella ran into Astarion while he was under Cazador. He had attempted to coax her to become another victim to lure to Cazador, but failed (he managed to strike up a convo with her but didn't get very far). Astarion and Joella from then on kept running into each other, striking up a sort of strange but amicable relationship (Joella would say they eventually became friends, but theirs was not a typical friendship).

At some point, Joella discovered the connection between her mother and Astarion and tried to investigate why this supposedly dead magistrate was running around town at night looking for a date. Unfortunately she kept hitting dead ends (and people trying to persuade her not to look into it too deeply).

However, her friendship with Astarion came to an abrupt end. One day Astarion coldly brushed her off, and acted like he was bored of her and wanted her gone (in truth, he was worried her continued association with him would draw Cazador's attention).

It didn't stop Cazador however from sending one of his spawn to attack Joella one night (as a warning). Joella, prior to the game, lived in her shop with her maternal aunt and uncle, as well as her elderly human father (once a well-known minstrel in his day). But, she still interacts with her mother regularly and even attends high society events with her. Besides Astarion, Joella also happens to know Wyll prior to the start of the game, and considers him a friend/neighbor of sorts, as they crossed paths due to association between her mother and Wyll's father.

OM Sinner's Choice - Purgatory

So far in the world of Obey Me we've seen hell, we've seen heaven, and now it's time to see purgatory. Or should I say, Purgatorio...

It's no secret that OM has taken liberally from Dante's Divine Comedy - most depictions of hell and heaven have! - going so far as to label the layers of the Underworld by the same names, right down to the four concentric circles of Cocytus, and the City of Dis above.

But while the Inferno isn't a one to one match for the Devildom, what with the seven deadly sins differing from those Dante deems hell-bound, and while Paradiso doesn't seem to hold much in common with the Celestial Realm, the middle volume, Purgatorio, has a great deal that is relevant to our fallen angels.

[Note: while the OG game was more in line with the Devildom and its layers being akin to the Inferno, but replacing the bottom frozen layer with the home of the sleeping Demon King, Nightbringer moved away from this, introducing the nine layers proper as a distinct realm from the eight-layer Devildom.]

The Underworld, as it is termed in NB, is set out in the exact same manner as the Inferno - nine layers, with Cocytus at the bottom.

The first, topmost, layer of Dante's Inferno is Limbo, a name often conflated with Purgatory, but the two have a distinct difference - Limbo is for those not condemned to hell, but neither afforded the ability to atone and work their way to heaven; while Purgatory is for those who are not condemned, but are given the ability to atone.

The bad but not bad enough and the good but not good enough yet, perhaps.

In the image released above, the title is Purgatory - so not Limbo of the Infernal realm, nor the gates of the Celestial. This is truly the inbetween.

Judgement - the Seven Sins

As I've written about before, the nine layers of the Inferno did not match up particularly well with the notion of seven deadly sins, and thus with our main OM cast.

But those very same sins form the structure of Purgatorio, where a soul must ascend up each layer, conquering each sin, in order to reach salvation.

And while the Inferno is structured to be travelled downwards, Purgatorio is structured to be travelled upwards. An inverse.

It is here, with some uh, educational methods that happen to look a lot like punishments, that relates directly to each sin, and the angel of the opposing virtue guards each gate.

The first of these seven layers... is Pride.

Guarded by the Angel of Humility, the proud walk with large rocks upon their backs, doubling them over, surrounded by sculptures depicting humility, and warning statues of Lucifer below.

The second layer is Envy, guarded by the Angel of Charity, where the envious have their eyes sewn shut with iron wire as they listen to examples of their sin.

The third is Wrath, guarded by the Angel of Peace, where the wrathful are swallowed by acrid smoke and visions of wrath.

The fourth is Acedia (Sloth), guarded by the Angel of Zeal, engaged in ceaseless activity.

The fifth is Avarice (Greed), guarded by the Angel of Moderation, where the greedy lay face down reciting psalms.

The sixth is Gluttony, guarded by the Angel of Temperance, where the hungry are starved of delicious fruits forever out of reach.

The seventh is Lust, guarded by the Angel of Chastity, where the damned run through terrible flames (direction dependent on sexuality which ew, but also surprisingly progressive of the time to not just send them to hell so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯).

All seven sins are said to be a form of twisted love. The first three are described as perversions of love into the harm of others (pride, envy, wrath); the fourth as deficient of love (sloth); and the final three as excessive or disordered love (greed, gluttony, lust).

What does this mean for Sinner's Choice? Well, see my full theory below ¬ᴗ¬ But it's pretty neat that each of the sins is represented as being in this Purgatorial space, alongside the opposing virtues and the opportunity to atone.

In the case of the world of OM, we know that the brothers do not want to atone - at least, not in the future. But upon their time of actually falling and grappling with their new identities? It may be more nuanced than that, and separate from their anger.

Purgatory 101

[Nb - all that is written here is vastly condensed, the subject matter is huge! I am also writing from a non-religious point of view - my interest is in comparative mythology, not theology. No DMs about the state of my soul pls ¬_¬;]

Purgatory as a place is not terribly old, or rather, that place being called Purgatory is not terribly old. The idea of an afterlife that is neither punishment or reward is as old as the notion of an afterlife itself - perhaps even older. The notion of atonement in death and the current meaning of Purgatory, came later, the naming of the physical later still.

Enkidu climbed the great stairs to the Sumerian Underworld, Innana traveled through the seven gates of the same, Orpheus plunged into the Greek Hades to try and save his wife (really, all the Greeks were popping in for a chat), various apostles made the trip, several religious and folklore figures fell down holes, and of course Dante wrote arguably the most famous trip - a repeating great story adapted over time to change the landscape, the occupants, and the political meaning to suit the author and/or readers.

Most cultures that have left written records across the centuries had a notion of an Underworld, and it was later that the idea of judgement came to be. In its earliest forms the Underworld was often a grim and sombre place, underground as the name implies, dark and dust and nothingness.

This grim fate was not terribly inspiring for those still living, which is perhaps the point - it reinforced the importance of survival, of living.

Later, when survival was not so tooth and claw, and when religions and faiths began to cause friction between warring gods, the notion of a death earned in battle being rewarded arrived, along with the promise of evil deeds ending in everlasting punishment. A call then to defend one's land and expand the rulers' reach with the blessing of the gods, and to live by the laws of the land to earn reward after death. (Oh look, that only benefits the rich and powerful, what a coincidence!)

Fast forward through time and organised religion then bent this to their own profit, where prayers for the dead didn't only help their lost loved ones progress through purgatory, but also lined the pockets of those promising salvation.

Dante penned the most influential trip through the Underworld, a bestseller to this day, but he was far from the first. There were multiple big hits before him, some of them extremely lurid in their graphic detail with a particular relish for the various punishments ಠ_ಠ;

Dante wrote not of a holy vision, but with political intent, which is why he is often pointed to as a forefather of fanfiction, with his various friends, enemies, and heroes all slotted into the places he deemed them deserving.

Incidentally, if you haven't read the Divine Comedy, I do recommend it. It's a classic for a reason! More than any that came before him, Dante solidified how the Infernal, Celestial, and Inbetween were perceived in the cultural imagination of an afterlife borne in the shadow of Lucifer and Satan.

[The later Paradise Lost by Milton goes a long way to explain the more sympathetic modern view of Lucifer too.]

Purgatory had became an active practise, and later the name of the previous inbetween, the place that was once the entire Underworld, and now operated as a spiritual waiting room where souls worked to jump the queue. (Unless they were in Limbo instead, which in Dante's description was a lush green place full of poets and artists which sounds vastly preferable!)

Purgatory, Purgatorio, the place in between... as the current day religions took hold, this place was given a particular shape - a mountain raised from the Earth, caused directly by the fall of Lucifer/Satan.

A great tower of tiers rising up into the sky, like a circular stairway to heaven - echoing that journey of Enkidu millennia before, and the countless stepped structures from ancient history that represent the same. (Tower of Babel anyone...?)

And caused by the fall of Lucifer you say...

Cocytus & Hell Piercer

So somewhere along the way, OM has shuffled things around from the source inspiration of the Divine Comedy. Cocytus lies at the bottom of the Underworld, and Purgatory and the associated tower lies at the top. This is hell, the Inferno, and the Devildom with its eight layers is... something else.

It's not entirely contradictory, and implies that perhaps the Celestial Realm also has a separate Paradise/Paradiso, allowing the main realms to exist on their own terms rather than comply with older assumptions (or indeed, deal with the notion of the fate of human souls).

They have made it their own.

Cocytus has been touched upon before in the OM lore, back in Nightbringer, but little is known about it comparatively. The four concentric circles copy Dante: Caina, traitors to their kindred; Antenora, traitors to their homeland (country); Ptolomaea, traitors to their guests; Judecca, traitors to "him" (their lords).

And in the Inferno, at the centre is the prison of Lucifer/Satan, trapped in the same ice that holds all within Cocytus, the beating of his wings freezing the air as he cries bloody tears.

Fun fact, for those who haven't read it, Dante and Virgil exit hell by climbing down Lucifer and passing through the centre of the universe... in Lucifer's genitalia ⚆_⚆ Well, to be fair, it could also be his ass crack.

Obey Me though, has rather sensibly opted for an elevator instead!

The concept of an elevator to hell is, obviously, far younger than the concept of a staircase to heaven. But it is simply a modern twist on the ancient journey to the Underworld, to katabasis and beyond.

The good afterlife has almost always been up, and the bad or neutral afterlife has almost always been down. Underground is dark and scary and where dead things go. Up above is unknowable and where the gods live.

An elevator, unlike a staircase, is fast enough that a sudden drop is a popular theme park ride - terrifying, exhilarating, and acting as an inbetween space in itself as you hurtle through the air at the mercy of a mechanism that is fallible.

No elevator plunging underground is going to open its doors to Paradise, even though logically that same elevator has to come back up.

The stairs of Paradise and Purgatory require effort, work, toil. The fall to the Infernal, whether in an elevator or from the sky like a fallen angel, is a one way ticket with no options of turning back.

Hell Piercer as a name is likely a wink and a nod to the many variations on Heaven Piercer across various anime and manga - the heaven-piercing move is a trope all of its own.

For our characters facing a downwards descent, its a fitting name indeed, and a subversion of their former selves.

How much this Purgatory shares with Purgatorio is unknown, though even adding the seven sins in the forms of their soon to be avatars does strengthen that connection.

Purgatory here shows us a battlefield, a place where angels fall, and the ground cracks open.

And Purgatorio was created by that very fall.

This then is perhaps the origins of that Purgatory, and this the first ever judgement and case for potential atonement, that goes on to create a layer for every sin - every brother - thus judged.

All my own theorising and speculation ofc, but it's kinda neat!

Lucifer

The first to be judged, the leader of the fall, and the birth of Wrath.

There's a lot to fit into the plot here, and while the game is titled for Lucifer, we do know that all the brothers play a part here, along with Diavolo and Barbatos.

We also know some of what has happened at this time in the canon, though of course that is always open to retconning.

The angels fell. Lucifer found Lilith. His oath was given to Diavolo. Barbatos did not approve of the new demon. None of the brothers knew of her being saved and reborn as a human. None of them knew why Lucifer would obey Diavolo's every whim.

And somewhere before Lilith was found, the four-winged Lucifer had already split from the Satan inside him.

One of the OM experts on my server suggested that the game should canonically launch on the date of Satan's birthday, and I couldn't agree more!

Satan can only be a large part of this game, as he is a large part of Lucifer - a physical manifestation of the rage that led him to rebel.

I just hope that unlike the mobile games, this one doesn't hold back from holding on to that anger and pointing the finger where it belongs.

The angels fell for their beliefs. They have nothing to atone for. What then does that say for those who fought against them...? 👀

A final note, that is more just my own curiosity... But we know from the original game that it was the Demon King who assigned the brothers their status as Avatars of the deadly sins.

We also know he was not present for the oath between Diavolo and Lucifer.

What political shenanigans might be afoot, and whether we get to finally see the long unknown Demon King... well, that I'm keen to find out 👀👀

The most insidious thing about eugenics is that society is so ableist the majority of people do actually think eugenics would work and disabled people are better off dead, they just tack on an assumption that while yes eugenics works it's still bad because disabled people dying for being disabled is morally wrong. But they never actually think it's scientifically or medically wrong. We're just civilized enough we've decided to politely pretend the science isn't right because social justice.

It's like how a bunch of celebs were big on body positivity and fat liberation...until Ozempic dropped and it turns out no, none of them ever believed any of that! They just pretended to bcs up until now healthy, long term weight loss was impossible so they had no choice but to cope by learning to love themselves no matter how they looked...but now that it's here we can go back to the truth! Being fat is ugly and gross and unhealthy and you should starve yourself and take experimental meds right now so you can be skinny which is what ALL humans are clearly supposed to be!! Yeah that body positivity stuff was fun, but come on. We know you actually just wanna be skinny and think being fat is a fate worse than death.

That's what it feels like to me. Every single time. Honestly in a lot of other areas too, one of the big issues with the left is that they really do seem to think that Republicans are right about how things work and should work but we just pretend otherwise because it's the right thing to do and it reduces suffering. Which seems fine, but you cannot be an effective leftist like this. You do actually have to deconstruct your beliefs and biases and world systems, you can't go around like "well yeah we aren't gonna kill disabled people that's eugenics and it's wrong" when you clearly don't actually think it's wrong. You think eugenics would work but implementing it would be uncivilized, and it shows. You have to actually understand that racism and ableism and all other forms of bigotry are not just cruel, but entirely incorrect.
