Randomness is the lack of pattern, the lack of order or intention. It is indefinable, unreliable and unpredictable. It is the uncertainty of an outcome; it applies to concepts of chance and information entropy.
`Someone who fits kitchens and bathrooms for a living asked for help with tiling: "Clients often want a random effect using different colours. You wouldn't believe how long we spend trying to get arrangements that look right. It takes a lot of time, and then the client comes home and says she can see a space invader near the cooker."
The problem is that we seek not a truly random pattern, but a pattern which responds to our understanding of it. But what does it mean for something to be truly random?
Apophenia is the human tendency of perceiving patterns or connections in random or meaningless information. People fear random events because they cannot predict the outcome. Since they don`t understand the behavior of the process, their brains try to prepare for the worst that could happen, and they find themselves in the state of stress. It is a conservation strategy for our brains to work properly and receive no damages due to the stress of the unknown. That is why sometimes we tend to create sense and see patterns in everything without there being any solid foundation for us to do so.
What we tried to do was to create an event, which is not only random, but also acknowledged by the public as one.
It consists of:
- a `sensor board`, which reacts to touching and sends an electric signal to a PCB, which generates sound, based on the information it receives;
- 2 mice, which are placed on the board and are moving on a random trajectory without any stimulus, which creates a sequence of sounds;
Artist have always been searching and asking question. This is probably what defines us as community – the urge to seek for answers. But how do we find answers in something which is fundamentally chaotic? And has no inner logic system to guide us?
The goal is to determine whether this process, in which the mice create a random unintentional sound sequence is recognized by the public as a random event or in fact as music.

Хората се страхуват от случайни събития, защото не могат да предскажат изхода от ситуацията. Тъй като процеса не следва определен модел на поведение, съзнанието им се опитва да се подготви за най-лошото възможно развитие и това предизвиква състояние на стрес. Апофенията е човешката тенденция да търсим модели и взаимовръзки в напълно случайни процеси или смисъл в безсмислена информация. Това е защитна реакция, за да може стресът от неизвестното да нанесе минимални щети на нервната система. Затова понякога сме склонни да виждаме модели във всичко, без в действителност такива да съществуват.
Това, което се опитахме да направим, е да се създадем събитие, което не само е случайно, но се възприема от публиката като такова.
Състои се от:
- сензорна дъска, която реагира на допир и изпраща електрически сигнал към платка, генерираща звук на базата на получената информация;
- мишки, поставени на дъската, които се движат по случайна траектория без външен стимул да режисира движението им;
Целта е да се определи дали този процес, в който мишките създават случайни звуци, без никакво намерение, се разпознава от публиката като случайно събитие или в действителност... Като музика.
