Evening
I often see a Spitfire from the Heritage Hangar at Biggin Hill flying over my Kent residence. I would love to see an Avro Vulcan flying again.
Soon after starting my career with the MoD I was flown in one of these majestic birds while testing some experimental equipment. It was an awesome experience!
In 2015, I also witnessed one of the last flights of the only remaining airworthy Vulcan, XH558 at a private display in Surrey. The pilot fooled us… We were all standing at the side of the grass landing strip looking left and right for the delta-wing bomber to approach. But the plane approached from behind us. If only I had had my camera ready… I could have got an amazing shot of the Vulcan flying at very low level above my Bentley!
The Vulcan Restoration Trust at London Southend Airport maintain Vulcan XL426 in “live” ground running condition, but I do not think they have plans to return her to the air.

This reminds me of young Tomas… now Farm Ops. Manager at my Dorset farm.
Tomas grew up in a farming community in Bulgaria… and has always loved sheep. He was just eighteen years old when he began working for me at my Kent home in 2018… and loved visiting the farm.
Early in 2020 Tomas kept bleating to me that he wanted to work at the farm during the lambing season. In March I eventually agreed to this. I was a little mean, and made him travel to the farm by public transport… which is not an easy journey. About a week after Tomas arrived at the farm, covid lockdown and travel restrictions came into force… and he was trapped in Dorset.
Tomas felt a little lonely during the following months. Some of the other farmhands treated him with suspicion… thinking he was my “spy”, as he was living in my farmhouse. But Tomas worked hard, and soon earned respect by voluntarily taking charge of bio-security measures, including cleaning and disinfecting farm machinery.
In August 2020 Tomas returned to my Kent home… but, not for long. He obviously missed life on the farm, but he was too nervous to tell me this directly. I had a chat with General Manager Farmer Frank, and in September we offered him a permanent job on the farm, living in one of the renovated cottages at the Dairy farm. Tomas jumped at the chance. This time I was not quite so mean, and I drove him to the farm.
Over the last six years Tomas has grown up to be a very confident, and capable young man He has attended several training courses, and now takes over running the farm when GM Frank is away on holiday.
Tomas’s favourite time of the year is still the lambing season, and he always names every new born lamb… and, somehow manages to remember and recognise every one!
