“Fair point. One of these days, I’ll get better used to what I need and what I don’t. After the first year, for certain, I’ll have an easier time telling. For now, I tend to trust DuPont without really thinking much past his word.”
“Definitely, once this season is over you’ll have a much better idea of it all. I’d still say ask one of us before taking DuPont at his word, though. I wouldn’t trust him with a ten foot broomstick.”
“Does the holding one in your hand thing really work? Like. Is that a thing people actually do? Because it’s terrifying. Thinking of holding something like that for however long it has to happen for.”
“Dead ones are okay. It’s just the living ones that scare me.”
“I’ve never tried it, but it’s definitely something I’ve heard about people doing. It makes sense. Maybe it wouldn’t take all the fear away completely, but as you get more used to it—” Elena swallowed, and nodded almost as if she was trying to convince herself of the benefits. After all, she had spent much of her adolescence attempting the same thing when it came to talking to boys.
“I’m certainly no stranger to scandal – I make my living in it, really – but there are some things that just shouldn’t be touched, in my opinion. Speculated connections solely for a Pureblooded last name are one of those things. Especially when you consider how many different branches there are of Pureblood families, and how many of those last names are equally common in the Muggle world. I prefer my scandal to actually have a realistic base to it, rather than just easily found rumors that anyone could access if they so chose. It’s unfortunate, of course, that few other reporters seem to want that. Especially the young and new ones.”
“Right, and while I wouldn’t deny that I am related to that branch of Rowles, we’re talking second cousins, and still scandal based on something other people have done rather than me. I think most people have some family members they’d like to distance themselves from, and I’ve never seen how it’s interesting to drag up those things. But perhaps for some of the less experienced reporters it’s the easy way to get a scoop.”
“Not the only, but it appears rare for a Quidditcher, at least. It was really an impressive match. Working with Morgan has been… a touch rough, to adjust to. But we cycled through second Beaters so much after Darlington retired trying to find one that works with me that I can’t say it’s been any harder than the others were. If anything, he’s been much easier, really. I think, once we’ve adjusted a little more to one another, we’ll be perfect.”
“Maybe I’ll just have more options when I retire from Quidditch than most people. Yes, that makes sense. It must be a bit better having someone of a similar level of main league experience for once.”
“I’m all in for muggle sports, but I should point that you could get in the face with that. Or bless the quick reflexes.”
“The main point of it is to practise reflex time, anyway. Aim’s easier to practise when there are actual people to aim for, and power is easier when there’s a bit more space.”
“I knew those gadgets were nothing worth spending money on… Especially for how much money they cost. It’s insanity, trying to keep track of what’s actually valid and what’s little more than a money grab for the less experienced buyers. I swear, rugby equipment is so much easier.”
“In general, if you think you can play fine without it, it’s probably a money grab. Obviously there’s some things which make things easier for some people. Different styles of gloves, various joint straps, that sort of thing, but you know better than any shop keeper what you need to feel comfortable flying.”
“I do eat meat, yeah, but that’s different than killing a spider, isn’t it? I mean. Meat is for sustenance, killing a spider is just a fear thing. I… haven’t tried that, every time I get close to one, it freaks me out. Can’t make myself do it.”
“Is it? I thought the point was you were too scared to kill it. Killing them is just about them being bugs and they don’t feel anything so if it’s the easiest way to get rid of them, why not? And they are also very useful as potions ingredients.”
“That’s…certainly unique. I must admit, I have no idea how that works for you.”
“It’s maybe a little difficult to understand without seeing it, and I doubt it would work for any position other than Beater, either.”
“It’s a practice I based off the muggle sport, squash. You hit it against the wall and it comes back to you. It’s the easiest way to practise alone, I find.”
The pub was packed, as it always was after a full day of matches. Everyone was drinking, either to celebrate or commiserate, and the noise had been slowly building for hours as people argued over the day’s results and what they might mean for the rest of the season. Among this crowd were Rory and her brothers, on one of their rare sibling outings. Now that play was over for the day, Rory was able to relax and enjoy her evening - or she would, as soon as she stopped getting interrogated about her patients.
“Alright, listen you three, I don’t care how many drinks you say you’re gonna buy me, I cannot tell you anything about anyone’s health so that you can bet on them or against them, or anything.“ They’d had this same conversation at least once a month since she’d started working, and she spoke with a sort of bemused weariness. "But, if you did want to get me anoth-” She’d started to continue when she felt someone nudged her back - the pub was crowded, so she assumed it was accidental, but it was enough to distract her from her train of thought.
The match that day had been an exhausting one, but one which had finished on a high, and Elena hadn’t had much in her to argue against going to the pub. When she was there, though, she had started to regret the decision. It was too easy to lose people in the crowds, and especially when fans were swarming around them all, wanting to talk about the match, or just talk as if they might be friends, or – and for Elena, this was the worst – to try and hit on them.
“I’m trying to find my friend,” Elena said, to try and ward off the man on her heels. Of course, it didn’t work. First, he said that she had spent all evening with her friends, which caused her to snap back, “Those are my team. They’re not my only friends,” even though she had, in fact, been scanning the room for Zita. He was tenacious, however, still insisting on staying with her until she found this supposed friend she was looking for, and it was becoming clear that he wasn’t going to leave her alone unless she found someone she actually knew the name of who wasn’t a teammate.
In her attempt to throw him off, she backed up into someone, and turned her head to apologise. She found herself face-to-face with one of the League Healers, and felt a surge of hope. She searched through her mind for the first name to go with the ‘Healer Webster’ she was certain on, remembering it just soon enough to still seem natural. “Rory! Hi there. Hey, you can go now, I found her,” she added to the man who reluctantly walked away. “You just saved me,” she told Rory. “I’m sorry for interrupting.”
“Mm, see, I was good enough at classes. That and Frog Choir. But there was never a second thought for me. Not even a backup plan. Which makes your having begun elsewhere and everything even further impressive.” He shrugged, drumming his fingertips on either side of his cup lightly. “How is the season going so far, by the way? I made it to your last game, you played well despite Burke missing the Snitch. Still pulling out a win without it was impressive.”
“I don’t know about impressive. I can’t be the only person who has had a major career change in my life. The season is going very well, thank-you. It was a good match. Our Chasers make an excellent team, and they worked very hard for that match. You’re not doing so bad yourselves. How have you adjusted to working with Morgan?”
“I’ve got an awful tendency for listening to shop owners when they make suggestions, unless it’s a fashion suggestion. I know far too little about what I need for a proper professional team, and they always seem to know what they’re talking about.”
“Well, they do, they’ve been doing it a long time, especially people like DuPont, and see what the long-time professionals still actually buy and use, but they’ll take advantage on your not knowing so well and try and convince you that you need a more expensive polish, when it does the job no better than beeswax, or some fancy gadget that will tell you your speeds and heights and stats, when in fact they don’t help practice whatsoever and will just turn into a distraction. It’s also a lie when those gadgets claim to be able to tell you how close to the Snitch you are, that’s why they’ve not been banned yet.”
“There certainly should be laws against it. More intensive laws than we have for blood status equality, I would think, though even those are difficult at best to enforce. Perhaps one day, we’ll get them. It’s an unfortunate thing, that the Wizarding World always tends to fall behind the Muggle world with acceptance and whatnot. But one day, one day we’ll get there. We’re light years ahead of them with regard to the medical process of this, just not the legality side.” She shrugged a shoulder slightly, looking back toward the shop for a moment with a sigh. “Having a last name so associated with the Dark Arts has certainly done you no favors either, I’m sure. If there’s one thing I stray away from when writing, at least, it’s that kind of speculation. It’s awful to still see it happening, I don’t know how they get away with it when you’re as high up in society as you are now.”
“It’s possible that it’s just a case of the knotgrass being greener on the other side of the fence, but it certainly feels like we’re falling behind there, yes. Still, I’m sure they have their own issues, and at least now we have people in the spotlight ready to talk about these sorts of things, and reporters who will portray it in a positive way.” She nodded towards Hazel, even though she was basing the comment solely off their current conversation, not ever having paid enough attention to who was writing what in their articles to have seen if Hazel was one of the better ones or not for staying away from more harmful discrimination. “That’s appreciated. People will enjoy any sort of scandal. In some ways me being on the Harpie’s main string is more reason for them to try.”
“No law, sure, but spiders are supposed to be respected or whatever. Professor Hagrid used to say that all the time.” He shrugged. “They’re still creepy. Irrational fears are a thing.”
“There are people who say that about all animals. I don’t know about you, but I still eat meat. And called irrational for a reason. Have you ever tried that thing where you hold one for a few minutes until it’s not scary any more?”
“Yes, but it may look bad that you’re donating to the cause of getting your glass refilled, rather than for the good of the children, hm?”
“The money is still going to the charity. I had no idea you were so concerned for the children yourself.”
“You’re not supposed to kill a spider, though. And when you do kill one, like thirty come back in its place and it’s a vicious cycle. I’m allowed to hit a Bludger at you without it being frowned upon.”
“Who says that you’re not supposed to kill spiders? There’s no law against it, I promise you. Anyway, my actual point was that they can’t hurt you. Especially the ones like that. They’re not even venomous.”
“I did. Manager wants us to be focused before the games, not too overworked.”
“It’s important. Though I don’t suppose you would do as well as you do each year if he didn’t know what he was talking about. I assume you are feeling fairly confident about your next one, though?”
