Elephants in our corridors! This photo was taken in Kerala, India, where thanks to your support, we have been able to secure a vital wildlife corridor which is a lifeline for 6,500 wild Asian elephants. These corridors of protected land act as elephant highways between habitat, allowing all wildlife to roam freely, to find new sources of food and crucially, to breed successfully. 

Local communities that once lived in the danger zone, can now live without fear of elephants destroying their livelihoods.

"Elephants are headed our way," said the text. "Please let others know."  Our work through the Nature Conservation Foundation is saving lives in Southern India with early warning systems that warn local people of elephant movements, keeping both people and elephants safe.

Meet Tara

In 1988, travel writer and adventurer Mark Shand arrived in Bhubaneshwar, the capital of Orissa in eastern India. Unaware of the plight of the Asian elephant, he began a journey that would end in a mission to save a species.

There he found this elephant, Tara (Hindi for star), a malnourished Asian elephant that he found to be living a life of begging and misery on the streets of India.

Mark rescued Tara and travelled with her across India. During the journey, he began to realise that the Asian elephant was in an incredibly bad situation, having lost 90% of its population in 100 years.

Mark and Tara developed an incredibly special bond, which further spurred on his conservation efforts to keep elephants like Tara in the wild.  His experiences are recorded in his best selling book: Travels on my Elephant. “What had started as a whim soon turned into a passion for the Asian elephant and by now it had become an obsession.”

After his travels and numerous attempts at addressing the plight of the Asian elephant, on the 1st September 2002, Mark co-founded Elephant Family and a new charity was born. Photo © Stuart Dunn

Mark was the driving force behind the charity and his unrelenting efforts have enabled Elephant Family to invest millions into Asian Elephant conservation, securing vital areas of habitat and preventing conflict between humans and these beautiful animals.

Tara continues to live a happy, healthy life at Kipling Camp, Kanha, India and was often visited by Mark. Elephant Family wish for all elephants to be wild, but when this is not possible, we promote the highest welfare standards for those in captivity.

There have now been 8 incidents of elephants falling into man-made wells in little more than a year with many more feared to be going unreported. In March, a female elephant fell down an open well in Odisha, India suffering massive injuries.
