The nineth live show took place on July 25, 2012. It’s the FINAL!

The show started off with all three finalists singing “Hosanna” from JCS.

First performance: Ben – “Who Wants To Live Forever” (Queen)

Jason: Every night, you go up a nodge. You are the benchmark of this competition. You are a superstar. Mel: You’ve been brilliant since day one. And I never ever expected to experience the performances you’ve given us. They’ve been totally and utterly astounding. Dawn: That was electric, Ben. You’re amazing. You are demanding my attention now and you earn buckets of my respect. ALW: You were absolutely mesmeric, absolutely fantastic. It’s almost like you should be in a show ‘I’m a divinity, get me out of here’.

Second performance: Rory – “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” (Aerosmith)

Dawn: That was massive. However much you rock out – and you did – there’s a huge inncer calm with you. You just confirmed everything which we already know which is that the part of Jesus would be safe in your keeping. Jason: You take on all these iconic vocals and you never fall short. Tonight’s performance was absolutely outstanding. Mel: I’ve been lucky enough to work with some of the most successful singers in the world and you are up there. You blow me away. ALW: Your voice is the clearest of rock bells. It’s absolutely wonderful and totally in tune. It was a fantastic performance. Bravo.

Third performance: Roger – “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” (Elton John)

Mel: I remember how wonderful you were the first time I heard you sing. I’m so so pleased you’re here tonight. Whenever you open your mouth, such a wonderful sound comes out and I’d still like to bathe in it. Dawn: What a splendid man you are, Roger. You’re such a golden talent. I see you playing so many leading roles in your future. And I see me coming backstage to congratulate you. Tonight, honestly, I think you could be a king. Jason: You had that presence, you had that warmth, you had that charisma. You have certainly earned your place on that stage. I’m a big fan of yours. ALW: Roger, you were wonderful. You were fabulous. You did take that song which I frankly was worried about, that choice, and you were right to have taken that song. You really did brilliantly tonight. I’ve got a blessed trinity tonight.

After the performances, the three had to sing one last time: The song was the iconic “Gethsemane” from JCS.

There then was the “guest” performance by someone who was not really a guest but a member of the panel: Melanie C performed “I Don’t Know How To Love Him”, with Andrew Lloyd Webber accompanying her on the piano. And because we all love her (don’t we), here’s also a few pics of her:

After that, the results were announced.

Roger came in third place and had to leave the stage first.

So, the final ‘battle’ was between Rory and Ben.

And it was Ben who won it!

3 years after ITV Superstar – Live Show 9 – The Final! The three year-anniversary is a good reason to watch and maybe re-live ITV Superstar again, I think.

The eighth live show took place on July 24, 2012. It started off with a group performance of “What’s The Buzz” from JCS.

First performance: Rory – “In The Air Tonight” (Phil Collins)

Jason: What an incredible opening song to the competition tonight and what a great tone you have in your voice. This song gives you the opportunity to showcase both your singing and your acting and I think you did both extremely well. I think you delivered a brilliant performance tonight. You have a special vocal quality about you and I have to say you are the rockstar in this competition, without a doubt.

Second performance: Ben – “Run” (Snow Patrol)

Mel: Well, Ben, when it comes to you, I just don’t know what else I can say, I’ve pretty much said it all, really. Another extraordinary vocal, it was powerful, it was emotional… Everything.

Third performance: Roger – “Hard To Handle” (Otis Redding)

Dawn: We had James Brown meet Elvis Presley via Otis Redding there. It was exhilarating and impressive, hip-thrustingly marvellous. I may be pregnant, I don’t mind. You totally got on the bus with the band there, there was a party going on. I order you to stay in the show otherwise I will restrain you in an inappropriate way

Fourth performance: David – “I Try” (Macy Gray)

ALW: I just got so much from you there. You are the great actor-singer that the West End needs. We have been blessed with four fantastic boys tonight.

The guest performance in the semi-final came from Katherine Jenkins who sang “Habanera”. After that, the results were announced: Rory and David were in the Bottom Two – something they both were already familiar with, I dare say. They performed “No Matter What” from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical “Whistle Down The Wind” and after this absolutely beautiful sing-off and another brilliant performance from both of them, Andrew Lloyd Webber decided to save Rory.

That made Rory, Ben and Roger the three finalists for the last show!

The seventh live show took place on July 23, 2012 which means there was a three day-break which was probably very much appreciated by everyone.

Group performance – of only five remaining contestants! – was “We Are Young” (fun.).

First performance: Nathan – “Born This Way” (Lady Gaga)

Dawn: Nathan, I really do believe you were born that way. That was entirely thrilling. You are mind-blowingly talented. For me, personally, I think you would make a truly great Judas.

Second performance: Roger – “Handbags And Gladrags” (Chris Farlowe)

ALW: The thing about you is, Roger, that you are a real performer and you would take direction and you do have the inner glow that we need. And I’m really glad I saved you because you have an extraordinary quality.

Third performance: David – “Too Close” (Alex Clare)

Mel: One of my favourite things about you, David, is how you completely inhabit your performance. It feels like every single move comes right from the middle of your core and it’s very powerful.

Fourth performance: Rory – “Under Pressure” (Queen)

Jason: I think that was the performance of the evening so far. I think it was powerful, I think it cut through, you have a vocal tone and charisma that onstage… I do see you in arena shows and I do think you can deliver the part of Jesus.

Fifth performance: Ben – “It Must Have Been Love” (Roxette)

Mel: I love your voice, I love your sincerity, we can all see you’re an absolute sweetheart, and for me right now, you’re my Jesus.

The guest star to perform on the show – this time together with the five contestants – was Gary Barlow. The song they did was “Greatest Day”. And Gary Barlow also said some nice things about the Final Five:

About Ben: Ben has got a nice air about him when you meet him. And also a great singer. About Roger: I’m glad he’s done so well in this competition. He really deserves his place here. About Rory: Rory’s like a little pop star. I could see him making records as well as being on the stage. About David: I think David is a great singer. And he’s a Northerner – that’s got to count, hasn’t it? About Nathan: Nathan’s got an extraordinary voice. And he’s very confident.

After that, the results were announced: Roger and Nathan were in the Bottom Two (Nathan found himself there for the first time in the whole competition!) and had to sing “Love Changes Everything” from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical “Aspects Of Love”. After the performance, Andrew Lloyd Webber decided to save Roger.

Performances are getting longer now which I love! The sixth live show took place on July 20, 2012.The show was opened with the group performance of “Pinball Wizard” (The Who).

It’s double-elimination-day!

Let’s go then:

First performance: Jon – “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” (U2)

Jason: This was a beautiful, tender interpretation of a very very classy song, well done.

Second performance: “Whole Lotta Love” (Led Zeppelin)

Dawn: You is one sexy Jesus. That was fantastic! And I dignify that you, the youngest person here tonight, to suck it up like that last night and retaliate with a performance like that. Honestly, Jeff, you have come on so much in these last six shows, I can’t imagine where you gonna go in the next few years.

Third performance: Roger – “Feeling Good” (Nina Simone)

Mel: Absolutely great song for you, Roger. I love seeing so much more expression in your face. To come out and give a performance like that when you’re not at 100 % is remarkable.

Fourth performance: Ben – “Cold As Ice” (Foreigner)

Jason: The standard of this competition tonight is absolutely off the scale. Ben, that was intelligent, articulated, scented. You continue to grow night after night. Every performance is a 100 %. Guess what? You could win this competition!

Fifth performance: Rory – “Silenced By The Night” (Keane)

Mel: Rory – or as my daughter calls you – my boy. That was a beautiful performance from you, very expressive which I’m loving to see. Your vocals are always sublime – and do funny physical things to me, I have to say. So, after that, I think you might actually be my boy.

Sixth performance: David – “Apologize” (OneRepublic)

ALW: David, the thing about you is, you hit the ground acting. You are a phenomenal actor with the abilty to see a crowd and an audience like we got here tonight and then make any person in that audience feel special which I think is extraordinary. And I think we also got to talk about your fantastic vocals.

Seventh performance: Nathan – “Sweet Child O’Mine” (Guns N’Roses)

Dawn: Nathan, that was phenomenal. Phenomenal. And yet again, the song for you is absolutely no problem. You conquered it. Plus, when you perform, I cannot take my eyes off you, frankly. You’re an eye magnet.

After all seven performances had taken place, there was a guest performance by Paloma Faith. After that, the results were announced. (This is all part of the sixth part of the video which unfortunately is not on YouTube (anymore) ). The Bottom Two on this day was a Bottom Three of which only one contestant could be saved and two would have to leave the show. Roger, Jeff and Jon were in the Bottom Three, performing “Could We Start Again Please?” from JCS in the sing-off. After the performance, Andrew Lloyd Webber decided to save Roger and Jeff and Jon had to leave.

(I always really like the cuddles at the end.)

The fifth live show took place on July 19, 2012. The group performance at the beginning of the song was “Livin’ On A Prayer” (Bon Jovi).

The voting procedure was changed from this show on and the results were from now on announced at the end of the show. So after the group performance, we directly started with the

First performance: Jeff – “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” (Rolling Stones)

Mel: That was brilliant, I really enjoyed it. From you, I’m seeing a new inner confidence and I like it.

Second performance: David – “Nothing Compares 2 U” (Sinéad O’Connor)

Jason: You’re a master at connecting with the audience. You have an incredible ability to draw people in.

Third performance: Rory – “Fix You” (Coldplay)

ALW: Your voice is as clear as a bell. And I’ve got another corny gag: Rorarenability

Fourth performance: Nathan – “Ain’t No Sunshine” (Bill Withers)

Jason: When you engage in the words and keep it simple, absolute magic happens. I do worry sometimes about the vocal gymnastics, but I have to say they sound fantastic.

Fifth performance: Ben – “Fast Car” (Tracy Chapman)

Mel: There were some beautiful storytelling moments. It was a wonderful performance, I love it. And saying that, I would relish the opportunity to play opposite you.

Sixth performance: Niall – “Wherever You Will Go” (The Calling)

ALW: I think actingwise you’ve come up a huge amount during this competition.

Seventh performance: Jon – “Feel” (Robbie Williams)

Dawn: You are one of the most delightful men I have ever met.

Eigth performance: Roger – “Rolling In The Deep” (Adele)

Jason: There’s a new confidence in you, Roger, and that’s what we have definitely seen tonight. And also, we’re starting to see a bit more of the actor within and that’s a really important moment so well done.

After the performances of the eight remaining contestants, there was a guest performance by the Scissor Sisters after which the results were announced.

Rory and Niall were in the Bottom Two – they did “Alone” (Heart) in the sing-off.

After that, Andrew Lloyd Webber decided to save Rory. But he also said to Niall: “I know there are roles for you in the West End. I think you could be a wonderful Marius in “Les Miserables” or you’d be a wonderful Raoul in “Phantom Of The Opera”.

The fourth live show took place on July 18, 2012. It was opened by the group performance of” Viva La Vida” (Coldplay).

After that the results were announced, as usual, and David and Tim were in the Bottom Two.

However, Andrew Lloyd Webber decided to let them do their sing-off (their song was “The Long And Winding Road” by The Beatles) but not decide yet on who he would save. Instead, he wanted both David and Tim to also sing their own songs in the course of the evening and do the elimination part at the end.

First performance: Niall – “One” (U2)

ALW: You completely conveyed that the song is about a huge argument. Your eyes bored into the audience. We’re getting there.

Second performance: Rory – “Roxanne” (The Police)

Mel: Rory, you keep getting better and better and better. You leave me a little bit breathless aaand – you’re my daughter’s favourite.

Third performance: David – “One Day Like This” (Elbow)

ALW: Tonight, you acted every part of that song. You conveyed the joy, you conveyed everything. It was your Hosanna moment.

Fourth performance: Ben – “This Love” (Maroon 5)

Mel: You are fast becoming one of my favourites.

Fifth performance: Jon – “I Won’t Let You Go” (James Morrison)

Dawn: You have a massive, surprising voice, Jon. And I want you to let us witness everything you got.

Sixth performance: Nathan – “How To Save A Life” (The Fray)

Jason: Wow. Simple. Beautifully sung, less is more, you know I believed every single second of that.

Seventh performance: Roger – “Here I Go Again” (Whitesnake)

Jason: That was so much fun. You got the balance just right between the rock and the soul. I think that was probably one of the best performances of the evening. You let go and now we’ve seen another side of you. I think it was fantastic.

Eigth performance: Tim – “Dream On” (Aerosmith)

Dawn: I absolutely love watching you, Tim, and you certainly went up five nodges there.

Nineth performance: Jeff – “Kiss From A Rose” (Seal)

Jason: There was a lot of passion in there, very heartfelt. I do think you should feel pretty good about that performance.

At the end of the show, Andrew Lloyd Webber then announced that the would save David.

There then was a guest performance by the Kaiser Chiefs to end the show.

Mel: You’re such a strong vocalist, you have your own unique style and I can’t wait for people to see you do the real emotional stuff.

ALW: It was beautifully sung, really really wonderfully sung.

Third: Nathan – “Sign Your Name” (Terence Trent D’Arby)

Mel: You’re one of the most incredible vocalists I’ve ever heard.

Fourth: Ben – “Somebody That I Used To Know” (Gotye)

Jason: It was giving me shivers. You told the story.

Fifth: Niall – “Stay” (Hurts)

Dawn: What a total dreamboat you are, Niall. (…) And there is something of a Lee Mead about you.

Sixth: Tim – “Stone Cold Sober” (Paloma Faith)

Dawn: I wish you has as much faith in you as I have in you. I think you’re fantastic.

Seventh: Roger – “A Whiter Shade Of Pale” (Procol Harum)

Mel: Everybody knows I love Roger. What a voice. I love listening to you.

Eighth: Jon – “Since U Been Gone” (Kelly Clarkson)

Jason: You’ve come out here today and you’ve absolutely blown this audience away. Great song, great character, great energy. Well done!

Nineth: Afnan – “Next To Me” (Emeli Sandé)

Dawn: I really enojoyed that. You got a real twinkle which I like enormously.

Tenth: Jeff – “Red” (Daniel Merriweather)

Dawn: I’m impressed by the fact that you have come as Jesus.

Eleventh: Rory – “Are You Gonna Go My Way” (Lenny Kravitz)

Mel: For me, that performance had everything: Great energy, great vocal and very sexy. I loved it!

No sing-off, no elimination yet at the end of the first episode!

Remember we left the potential Superstars at the end of the second episode on the departure to ALW’s villa on Majorca? That’s exactly where this episode starts. Unfortunately, for a few of them (10 to be precise) the journey is over at this point and they have to leave Majorca again soon.

In London, they have to sing their respective songs again – with a band, in front of ALW, Mel C and Jason Donovan.

After that, the judges make their decision and each of the contestants is called in to ALW to learn about whether he’s made it to the live shows or not.

A few more quotes by ALW: To Dirk: “What You got to do now is believe in yourself.” To Nathan: “I just don’t want you to go too over the top.” To Roger: “You got the most fantastic voice.” To Afnan: “I was very impressed by what you did with the band.” To Rory: “You got a really great recording, studio voice.” To Jeff: “I have a feeling you could surprise us all.” To Jon: “I way very impressed with the way you came back.”

So, at the end of this episode, we finally have eleven finalists who will be appearing in the live shows.

The three year-anniversary is a good reason to watch and maybe re-live ITV Superstar again, I think. You could for example watch each episode on exactly the date that it was originally aired. If you’d like to do that, simply follow Eleven Superstars on Twitter and/or watch this blog closely. There will be a post each day that an episode was broadcast – I will give the link to a Youtube playlist of the specific episode and provide you with an overview of what happened, whcih songs were sung, who had to leave, I will give you pictures and quotes.

On this day three years ago, the second episode of ITV Superstar was aired: Superstar Island. After the callbacks, 40 hopefuls remained in the competition to win the title role in Jesus Christ Superstar. They were sent to Superstar Island where they underwent a hard training and had to deal with different tasks.

On the first day, the contestants had dancing, singing and acting lessons. Here are a few pics from the “Acting through singing” class:

The day ended with a little sing-song, with all 40 contestants singing “Good Vibrations”:

On the second day, the Superstar hopefuls were separated into groups of four and had to perform “What’s The Buzz” in front of Jason, Melanie and ALW.

After that, 10 hopefuls were already sent home. The rest was again separated into groups and got the task to film and record a music video.

Dirk and Jeff were together in one group and recorded the song “Jar of Hearts“:

The song for Nathan’s and David’s group was “Edge of Glory“:

Tim and Niall’s group recorded a funny version of “Patience“:

Jon and Afnan were in one group and their song was “Without You“:

And the three Superstars who later ended up in the finale together were also in one group: Roger, Ben and Rory (and others) recorded “Grenade“.

At the end of the episode, all the contestants watched all their videos together:

In the end, no decision was made. All 30 contestants were invited to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s villa in Mallorca – which is the content of the third episode ” The Final 30″. The blog post for that episode will be published next Tuesday!
