can someone recommend me actually good witchcraft books with reliable information that isnt ‘The Green Witch’ because i see that everywhere😭 maybe more on the traditional side?
Those lists of kinds of witches so often exclude traditional/folkloric witches, ceremonial witches, and chaos magicians.
I wonder why.
Because a lot of people don’t consider those beautiful witches “AcTuAl WiTcHeS” and it’s so BS
I mean, they are also traditions that require you to seek out the information. Your everyday new age shop doesn't keep those books on the shelves. They are also traditions where you need to do the work. Getting into grimoire magical traditions is a bit more work than putting intent into your stew, stirring clockwise, and calling yourself a kitchen witch.
And I say that as basically a punk house hearth witch with a bit of a chaos magic flair and a soft animist nod to folkloric traditions. I study a lot of different traditions to have an idea about what they are and to help me reflect on my own practice, but really my own experience is about keeping me and my home safe and getting the things that I need.
I second this. I do sometimes wonder if folkloric craft and similar traditions aren't neglected because it's much harder to nail down an aesthetic when so much of it boils down to action. These lists seem to focus on what you want to be rather than what you want to be able to do.
The rise of the "witch aesthetic" seems almost more like a fashion subculture and tumblr seems more preoccupied with exploring the variance of visual aesthetic and the accoutrement rather than the variance of occult philosophies. The surface of witchblr seems more like a game of identity, like those "what kind of crystal are you?" quizzes. I think for many, the assumption is that a "witchy identity" is the final goal, to become a "witch", to be something rather than to fall down into a rabbit hole of study for the sake of curiosity or aptitude, and you can easily buy most of the accoutrement to signal your "witchiness", to affirm your identity, tarot cards, black clothes, and etcetera, but you can't really buy the fruits of study, and while practitioners can often sense each other in passing, there isn't something you can buy that imbues that palpable quality of the aura of a person who is long-steeped in magical practice, which, ironically, I think is what most would-be witches really want, but you don't get there chasing that for it's own sake. You get there as a byproduct of chasing knowledge and practicing and making things happen. I think many people on tumblr still see the operative witch as a folkloric identity, something that isn't quite real, and so the tea stirring, and the intention setting and the watching the moon and so on is the closest they feel they can get to bringing that identity, that power, into themselves. The constant "you don't have to practice constantly to be a real witch!" and the constant outcry of "you're still valid!" seems to betray that the goal, for many, seems to be to feel like a witch rather than to do functional magic, but I don't really think you can reach the state of being an operative witch if you see the possibility of things like raising storms or punishing the vile or what have you as merely tropes of fantasy. But witchcraft is, at its heart, an (often frightening) striving for genuine power, to do things, to keep things safe, to protect those you love, to have real demonstrable agency, to wreak real observable havoc, not a dress code with a quirky superstitious side hobby with which to decorate your identity in order to feel less like no one.
“These lists seem to focus on what you want to be rather than what you want to be able to do.“
So much of this. I’m less bothered by aesthetic because I think more of us are moved by aesthetics (in the philosophical sense) than we like to let on. It’s a good place to start because it is just a start. We all have to start somewhere and we all move at our own pace. You are right though, you can’t buy the fruits of study. There’s no short cut to that, it takes time.
Yes! Yes! This! Thank you!
I’m not sure if this graphic would be helpful to any other beginner witches, but personally I wanted to make it to clear up some things to myself. NOTE: This is how /I/ understand the topic. For more witchy art, go here.
Hey I know you’re busy but I was wondering if I could (potentially privately or anonymously (like on blog not to you)) ask for some advice/help with something potentially deity related?
I would love to but im not your gal, im not pagan so I dont work with any dieties. sorry love :(

What to do for the new year as a spiritual person
I thought to make a post on what me and my WHOLE family does when it’s close to the near year. We do this so that we welcome in good luck, abundance and prosperity along with wealth. It’s something that mainly my mom’s side has done for a very long time and good things happen from it (I also called this what to do for the new year as a spiritual person because me and my mom’s side of the family come from a long line of spiritual family members!)
So first off!
Go through your shit Like seriously. Get rid of things you no longer want or need. Like clothes, nick nacks, jewelry etc. Throw things away that is trash!
Organize make things more nice and neat within your room/home. go through things to find out what needs to be taken out, trashed or placed somewhere else.
Clean now with cleaning… You gotta do some serious shit. Make sure the dish washer is always empty and no dishes are in the sink (as best as you can). Your bed is made, your bath room is nice and clean, No piling trash etc. The point is, you have to try and stay clean as much as you can until it’s finally the new year and new month. Also wash your bedding and curtains if you have any.
Cleanse my grandmother would make flour washes to welcome in prosperity and abundance. She (and my mom when she was younger) would even wash the walls too. You can play music, light a candle, burn incense, use sage, holy water, you can even use perfume or colonge to cleanse your place.
Keep it looking spotless until the new year!
Something to note:
Now this is optional but is VERY helpful. My mom told me if you wish you can dedicate your place to who ever you work with. That your home is their’s as well. That you promise to keep it clean as possible in their honor for you know they don’t like dirty things.
You could possibly even ask them to help bring in prosperity and abundance if you promise to keep the place clean in their honor most of the time.
Cleanliness is next to godly-ness
Another thing, My grandmother would always buy new bedding and curtains and other stuff. In with the new and out with the old basically.
Celebrate the new year with your spirit friends, guardians or deities!
