Hello! I have just gotten into witchcraft, and by "gotten into" i mean I stumbled across a post and now I'm obsessed as of yesterday, but I have always kind of been interested in it, could you maybe tell me or link me to something that tells me some basic things, like what witches do or what witchcraft really is and different types of witchcraft and such? Thanks!

Hi there! I’m happy to hear that you’ve developed an interest in witchcraft! For this question I’m going to direct you to a witch that I’ve been following for a while now who has some really good resources for beginners in witchcraft in my opinion. @maddiviner has a link or two right in her sidebar that’ll take you to a wonderful collection of resources as well as her own advice (as a practicing witch of 15 years, she seems to know her stuff!) Personally I don’t feel like I can provide sufficient or applicable enough advice on this topic. My little hotline to the goddess of love, beauty, and desire <3 For more info read below the cut!

This is what I cooked up for my first ritual involving the deity Aphrodite (who I also refer to as Venus). To cast this circle, I got a piece of newsprint paper and chalk pastels that I had from various art projects. I knew I wanted to use a pentagram shape, meaning a five pointed star symbol used in many forms of wicca and witchcraft, but as I was designing it I felt like putting in a twist. The five pointed aperture-like rose shape definitely draws inspiration from Steven Universe. Inside the “petals” I drew roses and myrtle leaves, which are both associated with Venus.

Its been said that the five points of a pentagram represent the four elements as well as spirit, so I acquired five items to help summon Aphrodite’s presence. 

💨 Air - A pink toy wand I got from a dollar store a while ago. I have since added a ribbon and stickers to it. I sometimes use it for love related magic, so I thought I’d include it in the ritual to associate it with Venus. Now I intend to use it for quick communication with her.

⭐ Spirit - I made this little totem of Venus out of oven-bake clay. It’s modeled after the famous sculpture “Venus de Milo”. It’s hard to capture with photographs, but its coated with very iridescent glittery acrylic medium over a soft pink base. I keep it on my desk!

💧 Water - Perfume I got in Paris. I mean yeah, it’s from a convenience store in Paris, but Paris nonetheless. I dabbed a little of it on before the ritual.

🍃 Earth - My rose quartz crystal. It’s a lovely faint shade of pink. I usually keep it right next to my Venus de Milo statue.

🔥 Fire - A tea candle that’s always around, called “Under the Sea”. It is said Aphrodite was born from sea foam so she’s often depicted with ocean associated things. The candle smells fresh and nice. I didn’t actually light it due to my building’s restrictions, but I found that it suited the fire element all the same.

Once I was done setting it up, I turned on some pretty music and sat down on a pillow in front of it and started meditating. The actual contents of the ritual is more lengthy so I think I might save that for a future post. If you wish to recreate this set up, I encourage you to! The newsprint I used is 18x24in, and it’s super convenient to just roll it up when you’re done to save for future rituals (or recycle or burn it safely, if you needed to for whatever reason) For ways to customize this pentagram, think about:

Instead of roses and myrtle, draw the pentagram with other things you think Venus would like! 

Of course you can think of your own items to associate with the elements. I think it could be interesting to even deviate from the “air, spirit, water, etc.” model and follow your heart in choosing items.

Colored paper would look beautiful! 

You can spend as much time decorating the pentagram as you like. It didn’t take me too long to draw with chalk pastel, but if you wanted you could totally take your time with different materials (think glitter glue) and intricate designs. Aphrodite would appreciate your aesthetic consideration!

Offerings could be placed in the center area, or any items you wish to show her.

Big news! <3

I haven’t put a lot of my magical activities online lately (and for that I apologize to my followers) but I thought I would share something that is very important to me. It’s been a long time coming, something that I’ve been thinking of for a while now and I’m so happy to have set things in motion finally. I feel as if my whole life has shifted into a different, brighter direction lately, I can’t begin to explain the feeling but what I can say is..

So there’s a lot I’d love to document and talk about and I will very soon. Hello! I am new to being a witch and I just wanted to know if you could help me. I need to make a Book of Shadows, but I am not really sure how. I know that spells are supposed to go into it, but I was not sure of how to make a spell or what one looks like. I was wondering if maybe you could give me any advice on that or any basic beginner spells that I could start my Book of Shadows with. Thank you so much :)

Hi there!  Sure you can put spells in a Book of Shadows, but you can also put so so much more! Everyone uses a BOS (or a Grimoire) differently. I can’t even begin to list the things you can put in one. Treat it like a magical .. diary? A work space? A field guide? Im not sure what you will lean most towards, but if there’s one bit of wisdom I’ve appreciated the most about a BOS is this: don’t be precious with it. Yes, your BOS will be a special thing as you come to fill it up, but it’ll only be special if you overcome fears of doing it “wrong” or “right”. So scribble down notes, cross things out, paint over them, put everything in your book that you see magic in. Definitely do some looking around at stuff people put in theirs.

On the topic of writing spells, I would recommend not rushing things. Writing spells, powerful spells, can be ultimately simple yet bafflingly hard. I’m figuring it out myself. My process so far is to think of a problem or a wish that I have, and kind of build something very much like a cooking recipe for magic. Here is an example of a small spell that I’ve made that would fit into my BOS (if I was currently keeping one that was not digital). I would start by designing ones that use a very short list of materials and simple steps. You’ll probably have to do some testing. I could talk about this topic more in depth but hopefully this helps get you started?

I'm very new to witchcraft, and I had a question about sigils, if you don't mind. I know the most common way to create a sigil is to use the shapes in the word or phrase you want it to represent, but do you have to use all of the shapes? Or can you just pick and choose? And how do you choose which shapes to use/omit? Sorry if this has already been answered, or if it's got an obvious answer, and thanks for your help!

Hello! Nope you really don’t need to! In fact you don’t need to use /any/ of the shapes if you feel it doesn’t need it. The reason some choose to use the method of making sigils out of the shapes of the letters is to have a kind of starting point, to know for sure that their design will be tied with the intent they want. (That, and its a good way to come up with an abstract design if you feel that all you can come up with on your own is scribbles.) But it’s just one way to do it. Basically, my rule of thumb is just to make sure before you cast it, you look again at the design (however you’ve come up with it) and ask yourself if it looks “right”. Really think about it! Make changes if needed. Sometimes you get it the first time, though sometimes it can take a couple tries.. or more than a couple. When you get it “right”, you’ll know it, and it’ll be so much more powerful than if you had settled for anything less. So yeah, for me anyways, I’m chill about how much influence the letters’ shapes have in the design, as long as I feel that the sigil looks like it fits the intent.

Hello! I am a rather new Wiccan and I was just thinking about something that happened recently. A black rabbit had been in my yard for a couple weeks. I could get pretty close to it before it would hop away. I haven't seen the little guy in a few days. Any idea if this means something more or am I reading too much into it?
