Elian is the oldest child of six and so he never truly knew a childhood. Even from a young age he was expected to help take care of his younger siblings, a role he fell into naturally. He was responsible for getting them all up in the morning, getting them dressed, fed, and off to school. He would walk the younger ones before heading to school himself. Despite his responsibilities at home, he was a serviceable student. And while his parents expected him to help at home, they never once suggested he should disrupt his schooling to get a job or anything of the sort. In fact, they worked incredibly hard to ensure he had better opportunities than either of them, which is why he didn't mind looking after his siblings while they worked.
His first experience with a boy was in high school. Quick and fleeting, but no less exciting, it opened Elian up to an entirely new world he never knew about before. That simple interaction, that one night of passion, led him down a rabbit hole of desire and discovery that shaped him as a person confident in his sexuality. He never tried to hide it, nor did he ever feel ashamed of it. Through the years since high school he has known many lovers, though only once was it long term.
After graduating, Elian went straight to college for medicine. He was never the best student but he got by on his sheer will and determination. Many times, people told him he wasn't cut out for this field, that he would never make it. But his heart and his belief in himself carried him through. Some would call him arrogant but he truly only had faith in himself. One year turned to the next and Elian remained in his pursuit. During this time, he met a boy named Francisco that became his world. They stayed together through the entirety of medical school. Elian loved him and Francisco loved him back. They didn't make plans for the future or talk about getting married because they were so wrapped up in one another in the here and now. And then medical school ended and they went to work in different places, naturally coming apart as easily as they came together. Elian understood it, even if he didn't like it. He let him go.
In the years since Elian became a doctor, he has become known for his compassion toward his patients and his obstinence toward unfairess. He's stubborn and bullheaded but one the kindest people a patient could meet. He never tried to push his way of thinking on others, but he did try to instil in those he mentored the value of caring for their patients. One of those students, perhaps his most memorable, was Mateo Rafael. Though Elian was his superior, the two formed a unique bond that meant they spent a lot of time together. Elian never once thought to overstep his bounds as Mateo's teacher, but he made sure to keep a close eye on him. Even when they were more or less equals in the ER, he would check in on him to ensure he was doing well.
And then Mateo went away.
While this disappearance was explained away in the hospital, Elian never felt very good about it. He knew of Mateo's family, which was reason enough to worry. In his search for answers, Elian eventually found himself recruited for the odd job with Mateo's family, taking care of them, stitching him up. He did not agree with their lifestyle but he cared for all human life, and so he helped. Besides, it could help him gain some answers about Mateo. He received much more than he bargained for when Mateo's father personally requested something of him. To pick up and leave the hospital he'd worked in since he was a student, to travel to another country, and to take a job of the utmost secrecy... all to check on his son. Whisperings made the older Rafael worry, which made Elian worry. For some reason he agreed. And through the man's connection to the Kings, he once again introduced a doctor to the Haus of Perses.
