this staging of ariodante dramatizes the lead pants role (for those who don't know, in-fiction men played by women, typically mezzo sopranos) by having ariodante be reborn (or perhaps revealed? it's left ambiguous and that's what allows it to be heavy with meaning) as a woman, after he's tricked into believing his lover has betrayed him. about to attempt suicide, this staging of his despair aria "Scherza infida" has him putting on a dress over the course of his decision to die. of course, this has notes of "emasculation", a notion that some might have an immediate negative impression towards. Emasculation just seems like a reactionary concern, the kind that results in toxic impulses towards defense. But the vulnerability of this piece gets past that defensiveness. I find it fascinating how you can read the loss of masculine ego as what allows Ariodante to be reborn as a woman, but on the other hand, you can also read his failure to perform his gender as a force powerful enough to kill him. The crux of this staging is both liberation and execution, both transfiguration and revelation of what was always there. I'm very fond of it.
