Music is truly in the Edwards family blood, as well as being a dedicated farmer, her father was also a busy and popular concert tenor, and her sister is an accomplished accompanist, therefore from a very young age, Gwawr Edwards was thrown into the performing world, accompanying them in concerts on regular occasions. Welsh Soprano, Gwawr Edwards is one of Wales’ leading talents. She is in constant demand in the UK and further afield.
WAALM Tribune is happy to bring you this exclusive interview with Soprano Diva, Gwawr Edwards:
What is Art to you?
Art is the expression of one’s imagination and creativity. One can express a wide variety of emotions, feelings and thoughts through an art form that words could ever portray.
What made you to choose 'Classical/Opera’ as your music style, and what aspires you?
I have sung from a very young age. I was nurtured in the Welsh Eisteddfod tradition, therefore I used to compete in singing competitions every weekend during the Summer as a child. I also had a musical family as my father was an amateur tenor, and my sister an accompanist. I then started to accompany my father and sister to perform in concerts.
Going on to study voice in a music conservatoire was a natural development for me, therefore I trained in the classical form. I have been given many a wonderful experience in my career, working with many of our greatest singers such as Bryn Terfel, Rebecca Evans, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and many more. People like these, as well as the upbringing I received, has inspires me as a performer.
In your opinion what is the key for being a successful musician?
Being a successful musician is very hard, especially in the competitive world in which we live in today. I believe that talent is 10% given, then the other 90% is hard work. But those alone won’t necessarily make you a successful musician! Often it’s the contacts we make, the way in which we are marketed, and being in the right place at the right time - luck! Perseverance is another important aspect, never give up, and always keep the faith.
How do you see the role of artists in the society, especially those of singers?
The role of artists in society is of course important. People love entertainment as a way to escape their everyday stresses. Therefore being able to provide this is important. Music is also used as healing therapy, so the role of the arts and music in society is extremely important.
Recently you’ve been invited by WAALM, UK & Canada to collaborate on recording a new single in title of ‘Blue Jay and Red Cardinal’, written by Mosi Dorbayani and composed by Marta Bellido; tell us about your feelings and experience on this project and that how you connected with the song’s message and what you hope it achieve?
I was very excited and thrilled when I was asked by WAALM to record 'Blue Jay and Red Cardinal’ It was a real honour that they chose me as the voice to record it. When I first heard the music and read the lyrics, I thought it was perfect for me. The melody is beautiful and portrays the birds and nature in the song perfectly. I have an affinity for nature and wild life anyway being brought up in the country side, so it’s a song that I can relate to and give a meaningful performance of. I do hope that the song will have success and that it reaches a wide audience so that everyone can appreciate it’s beauty.
For those who wish to follow your career and activities, tell us about your other forthcoming projects and that how they can stay connected with you?
I have a very varied career to be honest, which I love. I have some television presenting work coming up, I currently have a radio show which I present every Sunday morning on BBC Radio Wales, and as usual, I have a lot of summer concerts coming up as well as some travelling, so my diary is pretty full.

We know you’re all great writers, so show us what you’ve got. Write a short story, essay or poem, no more than 500 words, on the theme “Iceland — A Land of Storytelling.”
Perhaps you’ll write a piece about an author visiting Iceland for the first time, a poem about a poet from Reykjavik, or prose about Iceland’s spectacular nature. Any and all ideas on this theme are welcome. Fiction, non-fiction and poetry pieces will be considered.
Our judging panel will select one winning entry. Judges will be looking for creativity, originality, and style.
People who have already registered to attend the Iceland Writers Retreat are also welcome to apply. If the winner has already registered, his or her payment will be refunded.

Held for the first time in April 2014, the Iceland Writers Retreat is an event comprised of a series of small-group writing workshops and cultural tours designed to introduce participants to Iceland’s rich literary heritage. Faculty in 2016 include Steven Galloway, Elina Hirvonen, Gerður Kristný, Cheryl Strayed, Vincent Lam, Miriam Toews, and Adelle Waldman. The Iceland Writers Retreat was named one of the world’s best writers’ retreats by the Sydney Morning Herald, and one of the top 10 “Events to travel for in 2014” by Four Seasons Magazine.
