She basked in the nicotine that she loathed just to prove a point, complete with a remark to get a rise out of him but Abel remained steadfast. If he had stayed and looked into her eyes, it would probably be wide and dilated, like an over-excited feline that found its prey. As he walked he felt Lisabetta’s gaze on his back and after a few strides, the woman was already walking beside him– not that Abel was in any hurry but with her attire, it was almost impressive how she managed to keep up.
This time, Abel almost flinched when he felt her breath on his skin and he was reminded how Lisabetta had no respect for personal space; her hand patted his chest, making sure to slip inside his coat that the consigliere could feel the coldness of her skin seep through his shirt. He frowned, eyes still looking ahead as they reached the steps to the correctional facility and the bothersome reporter finally left him alone so she may enter ahead of him.
The form was accomplished and the inspection completed, and Abel stood beside Lisabetta as he waited; there were two other visitors with them that day and they couldn’t help but look at the overdressed reporter and the glum-looking male in sharp clothes. They felt underdressed and wondered if they ought to have worn something else. One caught Abel’s gaze and she smiled apologetically before commenting that they made a handsome couple.
“We’re not a matching set,” Abel replied flatly.
Paperwork was always a bore no matter where she went. Sign here, initial there and do you consent to wave any right to be rescued should this place be taken over, blah, blah, blah. If she could wave her hand at such necessities she would but this place required her to sign on the dotted line so she did with just as much flourish as she put into her attire. God forbid her handwriting be atrocious. Even with ever name she took on she made sure the signature for the part she played fit like a glove. She had taught her left hand how to write too. That is just how committed she was when it came to these things.
A side eye to her companion revealed that he was still not a happy camper but then again when was he. He cracked a smile almost as rarely as the Queen’s guard. Poised, puffed up chests and eyes that bore holes into anyone who may meet his gaze. God he was such a stiff. The stick up his ass at this moment could rival that of Leon’s though she presumed Abel had more humor than that of his cousin.
Lisabetta had watched in silence at the exchange between the unknown woman and Abel. The smirk that formed on her deep crimson lips was evident even with the polka dot head piece obscuring some of her features. Her gaze was fixated on Abel before it shifts as her voice becomes like liquid to the ear as she responds, "Oh honey, you say the darnedest things.”
She had noticed the smallest flinch from Abel the last time her hands roamed freely on his chest and rather than repeat such a thing now - there was more time for that later - she instead clasped her hands together. “Pay no mind to him,” she said to the woman who had commented on her and Abel’s appearance. “He is shy and doesn’t like to make too much of a fuss when it comes to the two of us. Just you watch, he will deny we are together most adamantly so it is best to just go along with it, dear.”
Lisabetta’s words seemed to easy the woman who thought she had spoken out of turn. So Abel could not make one more quip and deny as Lisabetta knew he would, she heads towards the woman who she had been conversing with from a distance to learn all about why the woman was here. It was always good to know whom may be behind bars and what blood relations, if any, they had outside should the need arise. A coup could very well be in order if it served her or the family a purpose. But that was unlikely. It was always more fun to play mind games with others while she killed time. A speciality she was quite good at.

“Yes, she’s electric and yes, she’s a monster at times.”

abel-costello:
Her answer garnered a bemused expression and Abel refused to dignify it with a response; of course she was in mourning, Lisabetta might humor him and say that it was for Marcel since her employer just died, yet the consigliere knew that his family meant squat to the woman. It was all about money. And if he bothered asking, Lisabetta would just give him a smartass answer with a high percentage of it being a lie.
A hat to match the dress was produced somewhere from the voluminous skirt as Lisabetta continued to nitpick on things, from his loitering to his lit cigarette, and Abel’s eyes narrowed for a moment at the mention of his poor health choices. He knew it, it really was a nasty habit and maybe one day he’d fall dead from a cardiac arrest while in the middle of a run if none of his enemies get to him first. But he worked out, he had to, not just to stay fit and be able to stay limber when doing his job but to combat his vices.
When the woman finished sharing an anecdote of a nicotine-stained jacket, the consigliere finally peeled his back from the parked Corvette. He closed the distance between them and Abel took a long drag from the cigarette all while he kept his eyes on Lisabetta. He was careful, the tip of the cancer stick was angled away from her and he craned his neck as he inhaled only to slowly breathe out the very smoke that she detested to the general direction of her face, hat and maybe the top portion of her dress.
“Now you have another outfit to almost throw away,” he retorted and a ghost of a smile formed on Abel’s lips as he walked ahead of Lisabetta towards the correctional facility’s entrance.
Their banter, more like long volleys for the two seemed to be constantly trying to one up the other (or maybe that was just Lisabetta) was always one that she looked forward to. Abel never followed the script and neither did she. Who knew what either would say when the moment came.
Touché, Abel.
Not one to be out done, Lisabetta basked in the warm that radiated off of Abel as he stepped closer. He smelled of tobacco leaf and dark liquor. Should she bottle him up for later, he would say he was Jazz Club by Mason Margiela. Her eyes closed, a smile formed on her lips and her hands lifted to waft the smoke more towards her as if it was her newest perfume. Except this one was called Eau de Abel.
Once he had finished her eyes opened and full teethed grin was on her lips. “Now every time I wear this dress I’ll think of you and your lips sucking on that cigarette.” Her hands that had wafted the smoke towards her now moved to dress to smooth out it out and fluff what needed to be fluffed. This outfit was meant to be seen and Lisabetta would make damn sure every gaze was on. She allowed him to walk in front of her to the correctional facility.
Abel certainly gave her a better view to look out than that dreary building where the closest thing to a spa experience was face planting into fresh mud. Her head tilted to the side in admiration of the behind that Abel worked so hard on. Only when the two drew closer to the correctional facility did she keep in time with his steps so the two were walking side by side. Though her stature was five foot eight and his six foot, she could keep up with the best of them and still appear as if she was floating.
“You know,” the blonde leaned in close, her breath on the exposed skin of his neck, “if you wanted me to smell like you there were better and much more fun ways to go about it.” There was a twinkle of mischief in her eye as she said those words. Her hand reached up to pat his chest twice before her index finger traced a circle on his pecks before she pulled it back away. “No need for smoke and mirrors.” With that last remark she walked through the entrance and began the process involved with seeing an inmate in this correctional facility.

abel-costello:
The passenger, obscured by the tinted window was not revealed until the car door opened and a woman dressed in a black, dramatic floor-length dress emerged; a long, tired sigh then escaped the consigliere upon realizing who it was and he held her gaze as she approached.
“Lisabetta Biondi,” the name was spoken with a tone of weariness and Abel looked as though he’d just aged ten years after exchanging just a few words. Lisabetta was a journalist, one of many that the family has paid to help manage their public presence, but the consigliere never did like the press, therefore, he didn’t like her as well.
But it didn’t matter what he thought of her, she was persistent, even when he tried to keep the woman at arm’s length that an odd relationship had unwillingly formed between the two.
“I got time to kill,” he told her plainly before Abel helped himself to another lungful of nicotine. Lisabetta was an odd one, and while she presented herself as nothing more than being a writer, there had been instances where he couldn’t help but think that there was more to her. He had no proof of course, and digging around would require being in close proximity with her which he did not want.
Relaxing from his stance, the consigliere pressed his back against the car that he drove while blue eyes swept over the ridiculous outfit that she had on.
“Should I ask what the gown is for or am I better off not knowing?”
Sweet sweet Abel. How tired he looked now in front of her. Why she could see the bags under his eyes now that she was less than a foot away. Mere inches if she wanted to say they were chummy, which they were. If chummy meant that she enjoyed playing games around him and seeing if Abel could pick up on what she was in fact playing. So far he was zero for - What was it now? Twenty? Thirty? Surely not ten? Eh. Somewhere in the ball park of ten to infinity. He never stood a chance though.
Abel was the smart one in the cracked egg basket known as Costello. Not brilliant. Not a halfwit like others that shared his DNA and certainly not nuisance. Lisabetta was not good at her job she was the best. If and that is a big if, Abel puts two and two together she’ll pour him a drink herself. He was too pretty to kill outright. Too valuable. He was useful and her line of work liked someone who was useful. So did her family. Such a shame he was almost loyal to a fault. That family should have stopped procreating at two. His uncle would have had one less degenerate to dress and pass off as upper elite. She supposed the family no longer had to worry about that. Actually, it was the uncle that didn’t since he kicked the can more gruesome than Americans at a bottomless buffet. One could lose a hand if it got too close to another or lingered too long over the drumsticks.
One less man inhabiting the world never hurt.
Her hand swept across her body in a flourished motion. A gesture she drew out like the words she spoke, “I’m in mourning.” An answer without actually revealing anything at all. Dramatic Lisabetta was but it always had flourish and a purpose. That is more than can be said for others who clung used the flare for dramatics to just throw a tantrum. Drama was for the theater and her. Anyone else and it was attention seeking. She retrieved from a hidden pocket in the layers of her tulle dress. It was a task that should not have been possible but Lisabetta was adept at hiding things in the most precarious of places, a head piece that matched her ensemble.
Heaven forbid she walk in there without it so she placed it upon her head.
“It is not just time you’re looking to kill.” Perfectly manicured hands point towards the cigarette kissing his lips like that of a lover. “Nasty habit. Even worse stench to get out of clothes. Have you tried getting it out of a Gucci jacquard suit? It is awful. Almost had to chuck the poor thing. Almost.”

Abel sat in the car, his knuckles white from gripping the steering wheel too hard as his usual dead-eyed stare was replaced with something different. It was a look of discomfort and it wasn’t just from the tie that felt like a noose around his neck, rather, it was having to face Gio Costello after his uncle’s death.
There was no doubt that his father had heard the news, and Abel deliberately waited until after the funeral to visit; Gio had a temper, one that Abel had inherited, but even as a grown man, there was something about his father that unsettled him. So he lingered, this time outside of his parked car, as Abel calmed his nerves with a cigarette.
Smoke curled around him and the blonde continued to stare at the ground, it was only when another vehicle arrived that he finally looked up to see who it was. Abel stood defensively as a force of habit, and even when all his weapons were locked away in the car, the consigliere carried himself with an air of danger.
Her crimson lips part into a smirk at the sight of Abel Costello in the flesh. Whispers of his name still danced in the wind every now and again. She had heard from one tied to the family that Abel had dressed as the Pumpkin King himself for all Hallows Eve. Such a shame that she had to miss the party that was still the talk of the town. Her other duties had begged her to make an appearance and she obliged until Chicago once again knocked at her door.
It was like a guest she could never get rid of no matter how hard she tried. Or was it the other way around? Lisabetta was the guest in Chicago’s home that kept coming back no matter what the city threw at her. She never heard a complaint about her presence. Who would complain when she brought such a spark of life everywhere she went?
"Will that be all miss?” Her driver asked once he opened the door for her. Always a gentlemen. Lisabetta could rely on him for his discretion and manners whenever she found herself state side. Like her, he was employed by those who preferred a nom de plume than their true name. Everyone in her organization had one, even Pennyworth over here.
“I’ll ring when I am done.” Her hands gently lifted her long, sheer black gown in order to exit the vehicle. With grace and poise she walked over to where Abel stood, a cigarette between his fingers and smoke swirling in the wind around him. Polar opposites yet each had a similar core. Too bad he didn’t know just how dark her’s was.
“Why are you out here all by your lonesome? Should you not already be inside? Visiting hours are due to begin.” The smirk she had earlier in the car returns as her gaze looked over Abel. “ And we would not want to be late for a very important date.”
You know, it’s true what they say. Behind every great man is a strong woman.
