Blows my mind how people just go on Reddit and are like “my small pet is injured, what do I do?” and everyone is like “go to an exotic vet!” and then the person claims to not have money to go to a vet - or access to one. Or even know that their small pet would need a vet. Or, are a child. The parents that get small pets for their kids as toys. Don’t do any research and just throw them in the kids bedroom like “good luck!” I’ve given s e v e r a l lizards antibiotic injections and oral medications and wound care. When you take on a pet of any size, it’s your responsibility to make sure the animal is free from pain! Humans have selective empathy when it comes to species.

Are there any veggies/greens I can give my rabbit regularly that are high in protein? He refuses to eat timothy hay, according to his previous owner he always has, and I'm worried about his diet. He's a healthy weight, maybe a little lean, but I'm worried he might be missing out on a key part of rabbit diet.

Hay constitutes 80% of their diet. I would reccomend trying meadow hay, orchard, and other brands of Timothy. I had one rabbit i kid you not feast on meijer brand hay but refuse oxbow. Then I had one refuse everything but oxbow hay. I genuinely would rather you even try to feed fresh grass or grow timothy grass rather than try to replace hay with greens because its that important in their diet. Its a pain in the ass process but ultimately they need that as a big nutritional aspect of their diets. You can even try oxbow hay toppers to entice hay eating

I find sometimes for reluctant buns, try offering extra soft hay. Sometimes dental issues play a part. I reccomend rabbit hole hay. Its a top notch brand and can be ordered on Amazon. Their hay tends to entice reluctant buns.

non bunny owner so i’m unsure if this idea would work… but that’s why i want to ask!!!

what about making treats with hay as a main ingredient? blended hay mixed with favourite greens or diluted fruit juice? things of the sort? obviously this wouldn’t make up the 80%, but to bridge the gap between finding a hay they’ll eat?

i’d like to rescue buns one day and never considered that they could refuse hay… how strange.

The vets have been so amazing with updating me on my little guy and sending pictures. Here he is being loved by one of the techs. They are so good to both of us. It is so terrible being in my house without him. I’m so excited to go pick him up (hopefully at the end of the week) and give him all the love.

He is still working the gas out of his intestines, but his blood glucose is holding steady and he is eating and pooping a lot. They are keeping him hydrated and giving him drugs to help. He is so tough! My brave little Nan!

I also learned at the clinic that spinach is very high in nitrates and shouldn’t be offered to bunnies at all (same with cucumber skins) so I have been feeling bad about offering it all these years. My little guys are now going to be almost entirely kale eaters now.

Even kale is quite high in oxalates! However its good to have in rotation because nan is anemic so itll be good for building iron. Good daily greens are:

-green leaf lettuce

-red leaf lettuce

-boston/butter lettuce

-endive

-escarole

-dandelion

-fresh grass

I like to pair these with an herb like cilantro, dill, parsley, watercress, and mint. I just rotate between these greens for my buns

Toto’s harness training is coming along, took another long break from it to focus on some other things but getting back in to it. Just short 2 minutes long sessions in the morning

noting the different coloured head loop, is the head loop a different size? i’ve been trying to harness train my green cheek, but i find the head loop almost too small for him.

Newt wears the petite and Toto wears the xsmall, the colour difference is just because it was a limited edition colour they sent me

The head loop is also very snug on newt and that’s sort of how they’re supposed to fit! If the head hole is really loose fitted then the bird can grab it with their beak and tuck their head out of it which is unsafe. If you’re finding it really hard to put on/remove I found it helpful to leave it stretched over a water bottle lid for a week or two to give the material that slight bit extra room

You’ll be able to see in our harness training tutorial that I sort of have to push newts head back out through the hole because of its snug fit and you can see how much he has to really push his head through(at the 14:00 mark, I start the video with a fake harness/larger size for training and switch to the actual aviator/correct size at 14mins-ish)
