A very "chill" dog

Brèagha (bree-ah): Border Collie who loves flyball and swimming, and has no chill about it. Casper: former animal shelter worker (currently on hiatus) just trying to figure out what's next.

As we enter storm season and approach July (USAmerican here,) I neeedddd to start preparing our "bunker" (the room in the basement where you can hear fireworks/thunderstorms the least.)

So note to self:

Remember to play the white noise and music at random times because I don't want Brèagha to associate it with fireworks/thunder.

Remember to keep her noise phobia meds stocked. As much as I can afford to anyway 😅

I NEED to set up a crate for her down there with blankets over it, she likes having a crate even though she doesn't need it and it takes up space, but honestly I just keep forgetting to set one up and I need to give the girly her crate back! She prefers to hide in small spaces so that might help. Honestly I should just get a fabric crate since it's not actually for containment purposes. They're just so damn expensive for no reason.

We just went to the vet so her prescriptions are up to date and we should be good to go.

I always feel like I'm forgetting something. Anyway.

She's not a runner but any animal may run away when they're scared.

Wild animals don't commit murder. A wild animal killing a dog or cat is not an animal committing murder, it's an animal engaging in its natural instincts and finding food. A wild animal does not know or care that its prey is someone's dearly loved pet, it is just hunting the same way it would hunt for a rabbit or squirrel. There is nothing malicious about a coyote eating a cat or a cougar eating a dog; it's just nature that happens to affect people more closely.

It is devastating to lose a pet that way, but there are precautions you can take and at the end of the day, you cannot hate an animal for just doing what it needs to do in its own home. You have to remember that these are creatures choosing between starvation and survival; your feelings don't factor into that. Take as many precautions against wild animals as you can, including doing basics like keeping your cats inside and not letting your dog out unattended especially at night, but don't hate an animal just for trying its best to survive. They were here first and your home and fences are just another obstacle to finding food to them, no different from a river or bramble patch. If you want less wild animals attacking pets, then support efforts to revitalize local ecosystems so that they have an abundance of natural prey and don't feel the need to enter towns.

I hope you enjoyed connecting with hundreds of strangers online over your first time experiencing big gulps and ranch dressing. I hope you enjoyed seeing our cities in person. And our national parks, if you got a chance to stop by one. And just how big everything is.

I hope you hold space in your heart for the living beings who were swept under the rug so things would look nice for you. People and animals with nowhere else to go, pushed aside even further because we can't have the rest of the world seeing how our government really treats its people. I hope you talk about them, too, when you go home.

I think it needs to become common knowledge that "inability to read social cues" can show up as overcompensating.

You don't know how much misbehaviour is allowed, so you become the perfect child who never tests rules.

You don't know if someone is irritated with you, so you'll be extra generous and self-effacing.

You don't know how much is expected of you at work so you'll kill yourself in a minimum-wage job and not notice that nobody else is working like this.

"Hardworking and quiet" should be as much of an autism red flag as "ignores rules and doesn't know when to stop talking". Or why don't we just start using words to communicate so i can stop tracking everybody's eyebrow twitches, that would be great.

Always confused by my black, fluffy dog wanting to lie in the hot ass sun on an 83°F day. Girl are you trying to speedrun heat stroke? I mean of course this isn't even peak summer heat but girly why?

Truly frustrating sometimes cooking for people who believe that protein is only found in meat. You could make a meal with dangerous levels of protein and my parents would still complain that is has "no protein" because the protein is from plant sources. I'm not even vegetarian I would just like to eat more plants. And everyone on my mom's side of the family died of heart attacks in their 50s so clearly it runs in the family, and my cholesterol is already very slightly high, and I mean like I said it's only slightly but I'm 26 and highly active! So I would like to eat less meat, but I barely have the capacity to cook for us at all, let alone cook separate things for myself. And my parents are convinced that every goddamn meal has to contain meat or they'll die.

Unfortunately the only times I could possibly consistently add the things I want to add to my routine are before bed or early in the morning, both of which cut into sleep and I also lack the willpower to do.

We're within a week or two of the predicted time where the US will have burned through the reserve cushion of oil that's kept gas and diesel prices relatively normal in the US. After that, sure we'll be producing more or less as much oil as usual, but since said oil is pumped and refined and traded by private companies, we'll be competing for it with the highest bidders globally.

Genuinely nothing like this has ever happened before, and nobody knows exactly what will happen, but it's going to be bad. Really bad. The entire modern world runs on oil, gas, diesel, and petrochemicals, at every level. Just ...I don't know. Take a deep breath.
