"Well, Iād go about handling it the same way. Pop an Advil and maybe take a nap?"
"Already tried that."Ā
"Physically? No. Personally? Yeah, probably. Did you go to any parties last night? I wouldnāt normally ask, butā¦usually the simplest answer is the correct one."
"No, I didn't go to a party. Besides I could handle a hangover."Ā
"Iām no physics major, but Iām not sure the Earth ever spins faster or slower and, even if it did, gravity would prevent us from feeling it, right? Damn, did I learn something in Rigbyās class?"
"I was being sarcastic. Ugh. I really don't want to have to explain my sarcasm every time, dear. I was just saying I was dizzy."Ā
"Either it's me or the earth has been spinning really fast today.."
"Noā Not in a million years. I donāt accept charity, and Iām fine. If I needed help, I could get it on my own."
"Whatever."
"Drowning myself in my work honestly.
Ā And drinking far too much, straight black coffee.ā
"You're strangely funny."Ā
"⦠I donāt have health insurance. Stopā Judging me, or whatever youāre⦠Just stop."
"I am not judging you, Casey. Now, don't take this as me wanting to be your friend or anything, because I still dislike you strongly. Just let me pay for you to go to the doctor."Ā
"My head," he looked up at her incredulously. "Youāre not going to be able to help me. And Iām not⦠I canāt go to a doctor. Justā Give me secondā¦"
"Why can't you go to the doctor? I mean, do you have some weird wish upon yourself to be in pain?" Elle shook her head as she looked away from him.
"You donāt have to be an introvert to not like frat parties."
"A party is a social gathering. It's not like this party is a rager or anything. There isn't any beer pong or shirtless sluts, so all you have to do is find someone to talk to. If you don't enjoy conversation, then I would assume you are an introvert."Ā
Casey sighed deeply before slumping forward in his chair and burying his face in his hands. āItās been happening for⦠I dunno, a week now,ā he didnāt know why he was sharing the information with her. āThe pain fluctuates, but I always feel shitty. Too bad youāre not⦠a pre-med.ā He swallowed hard, his attempted joke not lifting the mood like heād hoped.
"So, maybe you should see a doctor." Elle looked up at him from the floor as she smiled softly. "Maybe I can help a little bit though. I do have extensive knowledge of certain medical pains. Where is the pain?"Ā
"Sorry. I guess Iām just out of it. Iāve never been a fan of parties all that much."Ā
"You must be an introvert."Ā
"Iāmā¦," Casey clutched at his head, trying his hardest to force out words. "Iām fine." His teeth were clenched now, and he wasnāt doing much to hide the lie that had just escaped his lips. He just couldnāt have Elle worrying about him, or helping him; he didnāt like the concept of owing people, so he hated favors and good deeds sent his way. "Just⦠should sit."
"Casey, don't be stupid." She huffed as she went over to help him over to the chair. "Can you just accept my help for two minutes, so you don't end up on the floor? We can forget about it after you're fine." Elle tried to help him sit down, before she sat down on the floor next to him.Ā
"You know that for sure, huh?" Caseyās brow creased as a recurring memory returned to him, sprouting from her argument that events could mold a person. He saw broken bottles, heard the screaming, and it was familiar, except for the blue-eyed acquaintance that crept her way into the memory. As he remembered Logan yet another time, Caseyās knees almost gave in on him. He clutched to the wall behind him, staring at the ground as he willed the room to stop spinning. "Shit. Not now."
"Are you okay?" Elle said as he began to seem very unstable. The brunette bit her lip softly as she watched him very uneasy. "Casey, what is going on?" She asked showing a bit of concern. Sure, she enjoyed arguing with him, but she wasn't going to enjoy watching him in pain of some sort. "Should I get you water?"Ā
"Iād rather buy gasoline to burn all signs of love with. Boxes of chocolates? Burn them. Flowers? Flames. Teddy bears? Ashes. People holding hands? Sickeningā throw the match their way."
"You people take these things over board."Ā
āSeriously? Iām not about to open up like Iām in some bogus therapy session just so your curiosity can be fed. What does it matter how I got to be how I am? Maybe Iāve just-⦠Maybe Iāve always been this way.ā
"People aren't born cynical. Children are pure and innocent until one day someone comes around and takes it away. It's fine don't tell me."Ā
"Iād rather you not, but Iām sure that wonāt stop you."
"Terrible parents? Bullies? Heartbreak? What was it exactly that made you so negative about the world?"
"Amen, Sister."
"Valentine's Day itself is a commercial holiday. Made up to bring in customers and feed the business people of the world."Ā
