christina ricci (self-explanatory)
the soundtrack fucks extremely hard
a lot of the characters appear to be lesbians, harold
teen natalie is a revelation
there’s a really smart, subtle examination of how female trauma is always expected to be available for commodification and consumption underscoring a lot of the themes in the adult timeline
misty quigley (see above: christina ricci [self-explanatory])
the whole thing is about the ferocity of female adolescence. female rage. female friendship. you love your best friend. you hate your best friend. you resent her and you admire her and you’re jealous of her and you’re possessive of her and you’re protective of her. you want her to wear the red dress. you feel nothing but contempt for her and her shitty opinions. you pull her out of a burning airplane and leave other people to die. you are her doormat you are her rock you are her conscience. you wear the red dress. you are fucking her boyfriend behind her back just to hear him say i love you (he doesn’t mean it) because he tells her he loves her (he doesn’t mean it) and who are you if you aren’t just a little bit her? if you aren’t just a little bit hers?
the convergence of the past and the present raises so many questions about the natural - and unnatural - discrepancies between who these women were pre-wilderness and who these women become in the wilderness. they were on the cusp of adulthood. they belong nowhere; they belong everywhere. they have their identities stripped from them in this very brutal, intrinsically human way and they have to build themselves back up piece by piece, layer by layer, after they’re rescued. the implications are as enormous as they are fascinating
absolutely 100% balls to the wall insane buddy cop chemistry between adult misty and adult natalie. unhinged. deranged. i want to put them under a very powerful microscope and just. stare. for a while
really digs into the meat (haha, see what i did there) of why there’s so much shame inherently attached to the idea of survival, especially for women. what did you have to do out there? what did you have to resort to? when you’re introduced to your basest, rawest, most primal self: what happens next?
did i mention the soundtrack fucks extremely hard because the soundtrack fucks EXTREMELY hard
