I Need to Touch You
Josh hadn’t noticed it before. He was always preoccupied with something else. He was drumming, playing a video game, texting, or doing pretty much anything where he was thinking deeply. And other times he was just so absent minded that he didn’t notice it at all. Or maybe it was because he had grown so used to the matter, that it was just something that he knew happened all the time. Either way, he didn’t mind much.
Tyler was almost always touching Josh in some way. His soft fingertips would be grazing gently across the drummer’s hand or rubbing small circles into his back. Even during their performances, the singer would eventually make his way over to his friend and touch his arms. He loved doing that. Touching Josh when he was all worked up over drumming. Strands of his faded pink hair would stick down to his forehead along with beads of sweat that glimmered along brilliantly with the light show. He loved feeling the muscles contract and relax with the beat. Tyler couldn’t get enough of Josh. He loved thinking about how soft his friend’s skin was during an interview. Those thoughts would often leave his cheeks a shade of bright pink during interviews, a mysterious thing for even the most dedicated fans.
Tyler knew Josh wasn’t fully aware of how often he was being touched, and honestly, the singer wanted to keep it that way. If he ever pointed it out to the drummer, he might always shy away from the hands of his bandmate. He felt almost addicted to the feeling of Josh underneath him. Something about touching him just calmed him down. He often found himself Googling odd questions as to why he would be touching his friend as much as he could. The most he got was that he was very clingy, Tyler knew this already. He was also pretty sure Josh was clingy as well. The drummer could hardly manage sleeping in separate hotel rooms when their manager would book the suites. He also discovered that it was a way of showing dominance. Every time that thought popped up in his mind, Tyler would dismiss it shyly and deny having any part of being a dominant person. The singer couldn’t see himself being “dominant”. Dominance was always linked to being rough and bossy when Tyler thought of it, and he felt like he was the exact opposite. He was territorial in a way. He knew that for a fact. The singer would always get so jealous when he saw someone else hanging out with his best friend. No matter what gender, he would always find himself in a terrible mood when he knew Josh was out and about with someone else. Tyler wanted Josh to himself and only to himself.
Josh always felt some sort of comfort and reassurance whenever Tyler would rest his hand on his knee or shoulder or wherever his hand managed to fumble down on. It was almost like a comfort blanket to him. But it was hardly anything, a phantom that never really faced him. Nothing that waved flags down and pulled his attention in concern, for better or for worse.
He sat down in his dressing room, his alien mask laid on top of his thigh, he wasn’t quite ready to put it on yet. The eyes of the alien stared blankly towards Joshua. “What? I’ll put you on when I feel ready.” He mumbled towards the inanimate piece of cloth.
Josh was feeling low, incredibly low considering that he was to go on stage and perform in front of thousands of fans in an hour. He hardly saw Tyler at all that day. Josh assumed it was because his friend was feeling down. Whenever his bandmate had a day where he just wasn’t himself, he would just shy away and deny his existence.
Going against everything that his mind and body said, the drummer got up from the cold leather couch that he was glued on for the past thirty minutes. The alien mask fell, breaking the awkward stare that actually wasn’t so awkward the more Josh thought about it. The pink haired male followed the colored tape on the floor that was labeled “TYLER”, eventually facing the room that Tyler resided in. There was some sort of stiffness hanging from behind the door, making Josh shift around uncomfortably before knocking on the door softly. He knew his friend heard it, Tyler let out a loud grunt.
Tyler was bundled up in blankets as he laid on the white leather couch of his dressing room. The tables were piled with untouched food and his clothes for the show was carefully hung up in a closet that almost seemed too far away from everything else. He knew Josh was knocking on the door. Only Josh knocked like that when Tyler was feeling down. Thinking about it made a smile crack on his face. He liked to think that the drummer had a sixth sense and knew whenever his friend was feeling down. “I know you’re in there,” Josh said from the other side of the room, his voice was gentle and smooth, a voice so warm it would melt butter and make anybody feel happy.
Tyler grumbled again as he slowly got up from the comfort of the couch and slowly paced over to his door. Unlocking the door, he carefully swung it open but before he had any time to say anything to his friend, the pink haired drummer almost mauled him down in a bear hug. Caught completely off guard by this, the singer practically squeaked in surprise. “Hey man,” Josh exclaimed excitedly. Right when his body made contact with Tyler’s, he felt such a rush of happiness and energy. Almost as if the singer brought him back to life.
“Hey,” Tyler said, a small smile crept across his lips. There it went again, his hand moved up as his fingers slowly brushed against Josh’s right arm. “Ready to kill this show,” he asked, his eyes pierced Josh’s.
“Heck yeah,” the drummer said confidently. His posture straightened when he felt Tyler’s fingers touch his arm. “Oh,” he hummed and pointed at his friend’s phone. “Give me your phone for a few seconds, I gotta show you this vine,” Just thinking about the video Josh was already cackling.
Handing his phone over, Tyler didn’t need to tell his friend his passcode to his phone. They both knew each other’s passwords to pretty much everything. The singer really had nothing to hide. Plus, his friend was only going to go on Vine which had nothing on it other than stupid videos. But, the drummer had absent-mindedly forgotten the name of this video. So, in an attempt to find it, he launched Tyler’s Google app. Before he could even type anything out, he was confronted with everything else Tyler had searched recently. “Why do I always have to touch my friend?” “Touching friend all the time?” “Always having physical contact with friend” Josh’s cheeks burned a bright pink as everything hit him all at once.
Tyler’s hand reached over again and rested a few fingers on his friend’s forearm softly. “Did you find it yet,” he hummed and gazed at the drummer’s face. He noticed the shade of pink that swept across Josh’s face and retracted his hand quickly. “You okay dude,” the singer asked, a tone of concern filled the air as the drummer stayed silent, typing away at the phone.
“O-oh! Uh, yeah! Sorry when I searched it up it wasn’t the right video,” he looked up from the screen and smiled nervously. All this time, Tyler was always touching Josh and he never took notice to it. That’s what was making him feel so comfortable. That’s why he always felt so low and depressed whenever he was separated from his best friend. Unsure with how he would handle the situation he found himself in, he shoved the smart phone into Tyler’s chest. His hand touched the singer’s shirt softly. That’s when it hit him. Josh realized that he would start doing the same thing to him. He thought maybe that’s what Tyler needed. Maybe Tyler wanted to be touched too.
The taller male’s eyes shot down to look at his friend’s hand that was softly pressing against his chest. The Vine started to play, and he wasn’t too surprised when he saw it was a funny spinoff of X-Files. Josh moved his other hand and touched Tyler’s arm carefully.
The contact was completely new for the brunette. It sent shockwaves down his spine as he looked over to the shorter male. “Why are you touching me,” he stumbled over his words, laughing nervously over nothing.
“I like feeling your warmth,” Josh purred, his velvet voice practically made Tyler swoon. The drummer knew this was a good thing, he knew his friend liked this. He had to have liked this contact.
“I’m always warm,” He responded quietly. His hand moved up to grab his phone but their fingers made contact and Tyler quickly retracted his hand in fear of making Josh move away as well. “Sorry,” he mumbled and looked down at the tiled floor underneath the two. The last time things had been this awkward was when he kissed Josh’s cheek in front of a huge crowd. Tyler loved doing things like that. Anything that would make his friend blush, he would find himself doing. But it seemed like right at that moment, the drummer had him disabled from doing absolutely anything.
‘I am definitely not dominant,’ Tyler thought to himself, as he stayed silent. “Why aren’t you touching me anymore,” Josh asked, his head cocking to the side so he could examine the face of his best friend at a different angle. Josh wouldn’t exactly call Tyler his best friend. Technically they were best friends, but the drummer most definitely felt something more than that. Something about seeing his friend made his stomach flip and twist. Whenever he would get close to him, his heart would race and his brain would clutter. He loved Tyler more than he loved himself and for some reason it scared Joshua.
“I-” Tyler was at a loss for words. His eyes shot all around the room, avoiding Josh’s face at all costs. “We should be getting ready for the show, Jish,” his lips turned into a small smile as he tried as hard as he could to pretend like Josh wasn’t staring directly at him.
“Alright,” Josh nodded and put Tyler’s smartphone into his hand carefully before leaving the dressing room. “Seeya out there dude. We’re gonna kill it tonight,” he hummed as he closed the door behind himself.
Thousands of fans screamed, Josh was trying to balance himself on the hands of the clique. His eyes stayed glued on Tyler. Throughout the whole performance, that’s all he could think about. Straightening himself out, he readied himself to play the ending of Trees. This was the end of another crazy concert, and it always was the most emotional part. Most fans were crying, singing along with the song as loud as they could. The air was polluted with emotions as well as the fog from the fog machines and confetti that danced and sunk to the ground. He raised his arm and slammed down as hard as he could.
The drummer laid down in his bunk, the room was pitch black and it was absolutely silent. He was too afraid to get up and talk to Tyler. He was terrified that he had scared away his friend for good. All he could think about was how their relationship was completely ruined, he tried to imagine going about without his best friend, but it only led to a terrible anxiety attack.
Wiping the tears that stung his eyes and dribbled down his cheeks, the pink haired male got out of his bunk and made his way outside of the tour bus. It was freezing outside. His heavy and sharp breaths looked like smoke signals being sent up into the dark atmosphere of the night. Josh looked up and started identifying stars silently in a way to calm down his anxiety attack. “Betelgeuse, Sirius, Antares, Alpha Ce-” before he could continue, he was interrupted by the RV door closing. Jerking around, he faced Tyler.
“You missed the moon,” He said with a smirk before making his way over to the drummer. “Did you have an anxiety attack,” the singer asked, his hand grabbed Josh’s and intertwined his fingers with the drummer’s.
“I was naming the stars first off,” The shorter male said, attitude was being spit from his tongue. “and,” he continued, “yeah… You know whenever I have an anxiety attack I go outside and do my thing,”. His eyes quickly looked down to Tyler’s hand which was tangled in his.
“Why were you having an anxiety attack,” his friend asked, eyes still focused on Josh’s.
“I was overthinking some things. You know that’s how I get most of them,” the drummer mumbled and squeezed his hand gently. “It’s cold. You need to go back inside,” His head motioned over the the door that was behind Tyler.
“Okay mom,” The singer said and stuck his tongue out at his friend teasingly. “And you don’t need to go inside,” he asked, taking a few steps closer to the shorter male. “We need to talk. About earlier,” his voice quickly grew serious, and his trademark smile vanished with his breath.
Josh wasn’t ready for this. He wasn’t emotionally ready, he was exhausted, he didn’t want to go through even more than he already did that day. “I’m sorry about earlier, we don’t need to talk about it, really. We can pretend it never happened. I just thought,” at this point, the drummer realized he was just rambling on and Tyler wasn’t listening at all.
“I don’t want to pretend anymore,” he hissed. His eyes pierced Josh’s as he tightened his grip on his friend’s hand. “I’m done with all of this pretending,” Tyler shook his head in frustration before sighing heavily. “Listen Josh, I…” His voice broke as he looked down to the gravel underneath their feet.
“Please don’t leave me,” Josh was nearly crying again.
“I-” Tyler’s eyes widened when he saw his best friend practically break down in front of him.
“I can’t lose you. You’re my rock. You’re what makes me happy,” The drummer paused, focusing on his breaths so he wouldn’t turn into a sobbing mess. “It sounds really cheesy when I say it like that… But Tyler, you are my everything. You’re all the stars in the sky, you mean more to me than Sirius,” he said, pointing up at a bright star in the sky. Tyler wasn’t sure which one he was pointing at, there were way too many to determine exactly which one Josh was talking about. Like when someone tells you to look at someone and they point at a crowd of people. All faces are a blur and all kind of look the same. “I would live for you for nothing in return,” a small smile grew on his face, he knew Tyler loved it whenever he made a reference to one of his older songs.
“And you’re never going to lose me, Jish,” he whispered softly. “I can’t lose my fluffy pink-haired drummer,” Loosening his grip from Josh’s hand, he placed both of his hands on each side of his friend’s scruffy face. Josh tried to grow a beard but he shaved it all off, Tyler loved the beard but he preferred the scruff. Something about scruffy faced Joshua. It drove the singer crazy. “I have to touch you,” his voice grew so silent that he was hardly talking at this point. “I always need to feel you underneath my fingertips. I need to feel your warmth. It’s my way of kissing you indirectly. It’s kissing you, but it’s not,”
Josh wasn’t sure how to react, his cheeks were burning a bright red but Tyler couldn’t have seen it, his hands covered his cheeks. After a few awkward moments on silence, the curly haired male decided to speak up and although every part of his mind protested, he said it anyways. “Then kiss me instead,” His eyes slanted shut as Tyler’s face dove down into his.
Soft lips crashed, the contact was electrifying, Josh could have sworn he felt electricity rush to his fingertips as he carefully rested his hands on top of Tyler’s shoulder. Necks crooked, lips parted, tongues shyly started to explore. Heartbeats synched and breaths paced. Puffs of air escaped from the two men huddled together and spun away with the stars. Lips and tongues danced together as teeth clumsily clinked and clashed. Goosebumps plagued Josh’s arms when Tyler’s lips parted from his and made his way to the drummer’s neck. He left soft kisses on the nape of his neck and nipped gently just below his jaw.
Pulling away from the intimacy, Tyler huffed and looked down at the shorter male. His vision was blurry and his head was dizzy, he could hardly manage to speak up. “You asked for it,” he mumbled and laughed slightly.
“And I’m asking for it again,”
