it’s eerie, how quickly she changes her entire demeanor. one second, she’s colder than ice, the next she’s sweeter than sugar. kindness is ingrained in warm eyes, and she watches ellie with feigned gratefulness. there’s no trace of the ice queen that resides underneath, and words are instead laced with a soft tenderness when she speaks. “you really saved me there,” she says, eyebrows furrowed into a slight frown. fingers quickly flipping through the folders in her arms. as if she doesn’t have copies of everything already. “and look at you! i got coffee all over you. not my day today, i’m so sorry!” well, technically it is. especially considering that she spilled her morning drink on purpose, to get an excuse to talk to ellie. but she doesn’t have to know that.

Ellie smiled at Rita, unsure how else to react. It wasn’t every day somebody walked into you holding a full cup of coffee, she was sure that was only supposed to happen in cheesy romance novels, yet here she was, drenched in what she could only assume was Cow’s milk. She repressed a shudder, acting fast with a cleaning spell. “You’re fine! It’s fine,” She insisted. “Honestly, don’t worry!” She waved her wand again, using the second spell she knew for good measure, smoothing down the front of her sweater to flatten out some of the creases. “Are you okay?” She asked, watching the woman curiously as she tugged absentmindedly at her shirt. “You seem a little flustered.”

“Some advice for you Ellie, don’t take a bet you know you’re going to lose out of spite. It never works out the way you think it will.”

His version of an ‘you sure about that?’ But she was already glaring as much as she could, so he’d worked his way around it. He wasn’t going to drop the subject, no. This was the one topic he couldn’t and wouldn’t drop, knowing who was involved. But he could reword it, make it sound like it wasn’t really about what it was. “If you’re trying to guilt trip me, it isn’t going to work,” he teased back. “No one told me it was my job to be entertaining. Just to keep an ear out. Next time I’m charging.”

Ellie ignored Liam’s comment, refusing to admit he had a decent point. She was stubborn, too stubborn for her own good and determined to prove him wrong. Even so she could feel the pull of sleep getting stronger by the minute. She was warm and tired and his presence certainly wasn’t helping. She always found it easy to relax in his company. Regardless of whether not she would ever admit it out loud, he made her feel safe. Sometimes she still got scared sleeping at home, as though if she let her guard down she might be attacked again, woken up by another vicious beast out for her blood. She hated feeling vulnerable but with Liam, she didn’t. She knew he would protect her. She knew he cared. “It’s always your job to be entertaining.” She murmured. “Why else do you think I keep you around?”

“Sweetie, I’m above the law,” said Dung, winking at Ellie. “I don’t get arrested. I’m too good for that.” He wasn’t — he’d gotten caught once before ( which, in a weird and messy way, was why he was sitting there ) but that was only once. It wouldn’t happen again. “I don’t! I’m perfectly good at drinking in moderation.” His voice was far from his own, lacking his usual accent and sounding more posh and pretentious. “I only drink on special occasions. I don’t even like being drunk!” He grinned, then, returning to his usual way of speaking. “I hate people who say those things. Liars.” Dung took another swig, let out a long, satisfied sigh and then let out a bark of laughter. “You do, but it’s okay. This is an accepting environment.”

Ellie rolled her eyes. She wasn’t sure why Dung’s disregard for rules was so endearing, but it never failed to amuse her. “Sure you are. I’m so sorry, how could I possibly forget? Tell me that again when you’re Owling me from jail.” She reached across the table, clumsily pulling the whiskey back towards herself. “Drinking in moderation.” She laughed. “So you wont mind if I keep this to myself then, huh?” She gave up on pouring a glass, taking a drink straight from the bottle. “Fuck you, Dung. Takes one to know one.” She teased, grinning childishly.

Ellie glared over her cushion at Liam, although her heart wasn't in it. She shrugged. "I just haven't been sleeping well, I'm fine. I'm not about to drop dead on you." She tried to reassure him although she wasn't confident she was telling the truth. She was feeling rather drowsy. The night before had been a bad one, the aching in her joints preventing her from getting comfortable. She had spent half of the night tossing and turning only to get a few hours of shallow rest in the morning. She didn't want to admit how heavily her condition was weighing on her, how utterly exhausting it could be. If she admitted it then it would be real and she would quite possibly look for somone to blame, despite the accident being nobody's fault. It was nobody's fault. She told herself again, forcing herself to smile. "Although, if you keep on being quite this dull then I may just lose consciousness." She teased.

Sarcasm for sarcasm. He laughed, the noise filled with nothing but a mirror of her own tone. “I only ever half listen to anything you say. I’m not sure how you haven’t noticed yet.” It was a joke, but it wasn’t all the same. He’d gotten better at hiding it over the years but there wasn’t a day when he wasn’t pulled in two different directions at once. Where he wasn’t already in two different places at the same time.

Ellie lazily waved off Liam’s comment, hand dropping heavily down onto the cushion she was holding. “I think the fact that I can’t tell the difference between a half-present Liam and a Liam who is fully paying attention says more about your conversation skills than it does my observation skills.” She teased, fighting off a yawn. She shifted, sinking impossibly further down into the cushions of her armchair, feeling somewhat comfortable for the first time since waking up.

He just shrugged at her. “Yeah, from the sofa. I’ve been benched, remember? And if they didn’t need me to keep an ear out I wouldn’t be here. I’ve got other shit to do.” Sort of. He’d been benched around the underground too. Which was more frustrating, he wasn’t quite sure. He shifted again, frowning as he thought. Besides Alastor, no one had ever really asked how anything worked. They just knew that he could sometimes make the impossible slightly more plausible and that was that. “How long have you known me? Spacing out is a given. I’m just…” he frowned more as he tried to find the right word. “Listening to what Cait is. That’s all.”

“Shit, man. You’ve been benched? Why didn’t you say something?” Ellie’s words were dripping with sarcasm and she smirked at Liam, a mischievous glint in her eye. “Oh, please. Like anything else you do is that interesting.” She said, despite knowing it definitely was. “I’ve known you for too fucking long.” She answered his question without hesitation, rolling her eyes. “Are you honestly telling me now that you’ve only been half listening for this entire conversation? Fuck you, Liam. Not cool.”

Gods, he nearly forgot he’d never really…explained any of this to her. Though then again, what words did he really have for it? It was something that was as common to him as breathing- being able to hear, being able to effectively see through someone’s eyes that weren’t his own. He’d been doing it for ages, listening in on his sister when danger was nearby, whether or not someone was  actually there to see him do it, to see him zone out. Though the skill had never really been as useful as it had been when they entered this war together. Things had never been as dangerous as it was for them, for the people around them until now either. 

“Nothing’s wrong, thankfully. I said I was running point, right?” 

Ellie raised her eyebrows, finally dropping back against the cushions. “Yeah, but I didn’t think you actually fucking meant it. From the sofa?” She laughed lightly, unable to hide how impressed she was. She had always known his skills were powerful. She had always known they ran far deeper than he let on, but sometimes she still found herself surprised by what Liam could do. “So are you going to tell me how that works or can I just expect you to zone out every few minutes with no explanation?”

“Sure. I couldn’t be in Ravenclaw anyway. The altitude would’ve messed with my head.” There was a teasing glimmer in his eyes before he went tense for a moment, attention seeming to be called by something else. Something else far away from where he was. His gaze shifted about as he listened, but the moment passed. No horrible danger to be privy to, yet. Though it was a close call for the group he was keeping an eye on. He relaxed, blinking himself out of the call away. Still, it didn’t stop him from doing a quick read of the room. 

He shook his head a little. 

“There a reason you’re still here Ellie?” 

Ellie scoffed lightly. “Oh yeah, that’s why the Hat didn’t put you in Ravenclaw...” She trailed off, her smile slipping as Liam froze, clearly on edge. She sat up a little straighter, focusing on the sudden silence, listening for any sign of danger. The building was old, partial to every kind of unnerving creak and whistle, but aside from the usual there was nothing. She looked around, scanning the room warily before letting her gaze wander back to her friend. “Is everything okay?” She asked quietly, confident there was nothing in the room to make him act in such a way. “What was that? What are you doing?” She leaned back again but couldn’t bring herself to relax, the expression on his face making her uncomfortable. For a brief second it had been as though he were somewhere else entirely. “I can’t get enough of your company.” She said slowly, making it clear she wasn’t going to let him change the subject that easily. “Is something wrong?”

“Well, if you enjoy being boiled down to a single quality, have at it. All I’m saying is it’s a faulty way of looking at things.”

Faulty and troublesome. People had been doing it to him and his sister for as long as he could remember. Writing them off as soon as they thought they knew them. He was only ever a singularity. Just quiet. Just cunning. Just a criminal. Just a thief. And what good had that ever done either of them? 

He shrugged a little, an almost imperceptible lift. 

“Yeah, yeah. Bright star of my life. Woe is me and all that.” The words hardly carried any meaning at this point. They’d said them to each other enough times for it to be exactly the same as a sigh or a smile. A habit, nothing to really be commented on. A show of mutual understanding.

“Somebody has clearly misunderstood the logic behind the House system.” Ellie teased. “See, this is why you weren’t in Ravenclaw.” She grinned, although her smile didn’t quite reach her eyes. She refused to admit it but she was utterly exhausted and brewing experimental healing potions for the Order was not how she had planned to spend her day. She knew as well as Liam did that she should be curled up in bed with a hot water bottle and some strong painkillers.  Although, she thought to herself, maybe that was exactly where he should be too. “Woe is me...” She echoed softly, her smile fading to be replaced by open sympathy and affection. The phrase meant more to them now than it did to most people, and, despite it’s not so positive meaning, it was almost a term of endearment. A way to tell each other they cared without actually telling each other they cared.

“I didn’t insult Ravenclaw. I insulted the whole house system as a concept.”

He caught the pillow just in time, shifting the moving cards into one hand though he still winced as the fluffed up square collided with his chest. He tossed it back at her a moment later, rolling his eyes to cover up the slight show of pain. 

“It’s the sorry state of my life when I have to admit that’s true,” he teased, finally setting the deck down on the table beside him. He didn’t really need their distraction anymore. 

Ellie sighed dramatically, making out she was talking to a petulant child. “The whole house system as a concept includes Ravenclaw, you moron.” She smiled as he threw the pillow back to her, realising, no matter how stubborn she was, he was always going to know she missed it. “Thanks.” She muttered, wrapping her arms around it again. She was well aware of the fact that it was in her head, but somehow the comfort of having something to hold helped to alleviate the ache in her bones, dull the sharp pain in her muscles. “Your life is a lot less fucking sorry because I’m in it.” She joked, not entirely believing her own words. “Don’t bother pretending otherwise.”

Task #003 - Modern/Muggle AU 

Ellies magic being the main reason she stayed with her dad when her parents got divorced, taking magic out of the equation means Ellie decided to live with her mum. She’s a much more attentive parent, and Ellie was raised in a loving, healthy environment. 

Veganism is obviously a much bigger thing so you can bet she loves taking to the streets with her outreach and activism. She’s in a few groups, including the Animal Liberation Front and frequently rescues animals from captivity. 

She’s obsessed with Creepypasta and other tumblr/youtube accounts that are famous for following strange, unsettling legends and stories. 

She is also fascinated by plant based magic. Not the kind of magic typical to the Wizarding World but subtle, faith-based magic. She practises occasionally, and is usually successful in what she is trying to achieve, dabbling in harmless potions and spells, usually involving spiritual healing, cleansing and sleeping aids. 

She takes a lot of inspiration from tumblr when it comes to the way she dresses, loving obscure slogan t shirts and anything plaid. Glitter roots are her absolute favourite and you’ll never see her without them.

Obviously she is human in this scenario and is much less likely to use humour as a defence mechanism because this is something she learned from her father and many years of emotional neglect. She is overall a much healthier, happier person and far more confident in herself.

“Ooh, yay.” He drew out the words, flat sarcasm filling every note. “Can I put in a request for one with dogs in stupid hats?” 

He knew the joke wouldn’t be lost on her. Whether or not it would piss her off today, he wasn’t entirely certain. He watched her warily as she shifted about before ducking his gaze back down to the cards still moving in his hands, disappearing and reappearing. Thing was, he wasn’t much of a fighter. Not like that. He fought when he had his odds stacked in the right way. He fought when he already knew the outcome. Otherwise he tricked, he deceived, he lied. When he fought without any of that well…he guess that’s what had gotten him stuck on the bench in the first place. “I’m not saying you can’t. I’m just saying I’d never met a therapist whose main form of reinforcement was punching their clients.” Though he’d never met a therapist, period. So what did he know? “Besides, most of that house shit is total bunk anyway.”

His hands stopped moving for a moment then as he looked up at her while she struggled to find her words. He knew what to say even less when she was done and it took a while to find anything at all. “For being an asshole and selfish, that was actually kind of nice.”

 "Glad somebody's finding it amusing." Ellie teased, narrowing her eyes at the joke. "It's a good thing I'm not a therapist then, huh?" She threw her pillow lazily at Liam, feigning offence. “Tell me you did not just insult Ravenclaw? Whatever happened to House Pride?” She shifted again, immediately missing the warmth the pillow provided. She crossed her arms, too stubborn to admit she wanted it back. "Kind of?" She asked pointedly, attempted to hide how happy his words made her feel. She hated to admit it, refused to admit it, even, but a part of her so desperately longed for his approval. "Pfft, nice try. I'm the nicest fucking person you know."

“You know what?,” he said, voice still serious as he sat up a little more. “I’m going to get you an award. A real nice one, with real gold and everything.” How he’d get it, he didn’t say — he assumed she knew, and if she didn’t, that’d probably be for the best. Dung took another sip from the bottle, leaned back and grinned. “Damn. It’s a miracle it hasn’t been drunken before, then, ‘cause most of us are alcoholics, to a certain degree. Not ME, of course, I barely ever drink, but you know.”

Ellie grinned, unable to help herself. She knew where Dung was going with his plan, but she had too much alcohol in her system to really object to any stealing. “Just don’t get your ass arrested, okay?” She said, taking another drink and wincing lightly at the burn. “Fuck off do you barely ever drink.” Ellie laughed. “And hey, speak for yourself, asshole. I don’t have a drinking problem!” She down what was left of her drink, placing the glass back down onto the table with a little more force than was necessary. Ah, the inability to perform simple tasks. This was when it got really good.

“That a subtle hint we should just get you a calendar for your next birthday?”

The corners of his lips quirked up again, amusement coloring his features for a moment before he went back to working on the deck in his hands. False cut, three ways. “If I’m supposed to be your role model there’s clearly something wrong with you. Besides, I was much more of a hands on learner anyway.” And it was easy to learn things if they meant you survived another day. Astronomy just happened to fall to the wayside. He didn’t need to know where to find the Big Dipper in order to make sure he was still breathing in the morning. He shook his head a little, continued on with the trick. 

“It’s not that. Just easier to deal with a problem if you’re there rather than listen to it unfold. And in the grand scheme of things, how I feel hardly fits into the bigger picture. There’s far more important things to deal with around here. Punch me if you want. Though you did have a weird wise therapist thing going on there for a quick minute.”  

“It’s a subtle hint that I’m getting you a calendar for your next birthday.” Ellie laughed, not taking her eyes off of the cards. “There are so many things wrong with me, Liam.” She joked. “You aren’t one of them, believe me.” She pulled a cushion from behind herself, hugging it to her chest in an attempt to get comfortable. “Hm, I wouldn’t know about that.” She shrugged. Liam knew she wasn’t a fighter. She was, in fact, the complete opposite of him. She liked to fight in the shadows, using subtle and less direct tactics. She was much more content in aiding the actual fighters than doing any of the fighting herself. Her strengths had never lied in duelling, despite her talents for spellwork. “I’m extremely fucking wise.” She grinned. “Ravenclaw, remember? I can be wise and punch people, who says I can’t?” She rested her chin on the pillow, tearing her gaze away from the card trick to watch him affectionately. “I’m glad you’re safe, though.” She admitted. “I know you hate not being in the field but... I’m glad you’re safe, even if it is temporary. I know it’s shit and you’re in pain and stuff but... well, you know. I’m an asshole, I’m selfish.”
