Hello everyone!!! I’m newer to rotumblr so I’ll mostly be looking around for now.

My name’s Elliot, I’m 22 and living in Kalos. I go by she/they and I currently work as an aerial surveyor with my Pideot. Sometimes I help out my local rangers with flying type Pokémon, so I’m planning on getting a certification in flying types.

Sometimes I’ll send updates on my Pokémon, but I generally don’t have time to run a full time blog.

Anyways, introducing my team:

+ Barrel-Roll or “Rolly” my Pideot and partner Pokémon, helped raise him from an egg

+ Lum my Gulpin, she’s really squishy and came from my uncle’s ranch in Hoenn

+ Callum, a Farfetch’d I caught recently while helping some rangers

Photo from my friend Devon, he works as a veterinarian in Lumiose (very jam packed). Anyways, this Luxray is on the older side and had some teeth needing of a clean, so they zooted him up and cleaned everything very well!

After everything was done, he snagged this photo while the effects were coming off. This guy was also very loving the entire time according to my friend.

(Devon asked the trainer if he could take a picture of their Pokémon, and if it was ok to be put on rotumblr after I laughed at the photo. They were a good sport about the whole thing)

So my uncle recently got a gulpin he named Sweet Cheeks, cause the little guy really likes to try and steal my uncle’s homemade mago berry bread.

But it got me thinking, can poison types be immune to general toxins found elsewhere? Like, for example, you can’t feed Pokémon chocolate cause it’s toxic to them, but can a poison type consume chocolate? Or if it varies from Pokémon to Pokémon, can the gulpin line consume it since their stomachs are really strong?

it depends entirely on the pokemon. being poison type, much like being steel type, prevents being poisoned by type energy, not by other means. there are tons of different types of toxins, and it's pretty much impossible for a pokemon's body to be immune to all of them.

in gulpin's case, the acidity in their stomach is powerful enough to handle many things that would be toxic to other pokemon. bacteria that can survive their digestive tract and few and far between, and many organic toxins (such as those produced by certain bug types) simply break down before they can have any effect. however, it is entirely possible to poison them with things that reduce the production of stomach acid. reducing their quantity of stomach acid disrupts their digestion in a way that can quickly become fatal, as most of their body consists of their stomach, and they typically eat very large portions at a time. i read a veterinary case study not too long ago about a gulpin that ate its trainer's freshly-refilled prescription omeprazole and ended up hospitalized with gastric stasis.

it's unfortunately very common for poison types to be brought in too late after being poisoned because of the assumption that nothing is toxic to them. quick response is vital when dealing with a potential toxicity case, so never assume that your pokemon can handle something because of its typing, and make sure you know a list of common items that are toxic to your pokemon!

I believe you mentioned a couple times about your process of obtaining your type certifications, and that one of them was a flying type certification! (if I’m remembering correctly-)

I was planning on getting a civilian flying type certification, mostly so that I can better take care of my Pideot and Farfetch’d.

Anyways, was there anything in particular that you had to do for your flying type certification? Or if you can’t answer that, how is your steel type certification coming along?

my flying type certification went a bit differently from my dragon and steel type certification! it basically came for free with my ornithology degree, with the stipulation that i still needed to do my practical handling test with the ranger union and take their humongous written exam as well. once i passed those, i was given my certification on the understanding that i had already shown myself capable of understanding the needs of flying types and keeping up with current research.

"civilian" type certifications are a bit of a different beast! there are a lot of different kinds of non-ranger-based certifications, but these are by and large professional licenses. people mostly get these because they're interested in pokemon care/training jobs. these certs are generally not as academically rigorous as a ranger union cert and tend to focus more on qualities that a ranger cert doesn't touch on, such as battling, working pokemon training, and obedience training. some prestigious jobs, such as teacher positions at high-ranking battle academies, require a certification in at least one typing. i find that a lot of gym leaders and elite 4 members are certified in their preferred type, usually getting their certification under the international pokemon league association.

my steel type cert is coming along really nicely! i've finished two of the care guides i need to write, and i've logged a whole bunch of pokemon handling hours since wrapping up my grad school thesis. i need to get started on my research paper and keep studying for the written exam, but i think i'll be certified within the next two years!
