RP PSA – Don’t Do The Thing

I have a situation that’s a bit of a downer for me as I play a female OC muse that just wants to have girl BFFs damnit, and one RP partner I have plays a popular canon female character. The RP partner will often do more shippy things instead of non-shippy things. As I have some threads with her, this can be irksome sometimes as the shippy stuff gets answered before mine, but I understand that each person has their own writing styles and wants and things they LIKE writing, so I’m not bothered by it. I have other people I can RP with, and when she does reply it’s nice to hear from her.

BUT

This person is now getting anon hate, because of shipping.

I obviously have my own opinion. And a good number of canon females do often fall into shippy plots because that’s what has been set up to easily plot. Female characters are written to be male love interests about 80%-90% of the time in shows. So when it’s a canon character, there’s already a WEALTH of plots that come to mind when say Damon and Caroline, or Emily and Aria, or Marcel and Elijah are the characters in the thread. If you’re someone who is anti-ship, that’s OK. Some people don’t like to write romantic relationships (for me it takes a lot of character development and that’s OK to). But some people do.

WHAT IS NOT OK IS GOING INTO A MUN’S SPACE AND SENDING THEM ANONS ABOUT WHY THEY SUCK BECAUSE THEY WRITE A CERTAIN GENRE.

Does it REALLY matter to you that Bonnie and Kai are in YET ANOTHER SHIP thread? No. Does it effect your life in any way if someone posts a starter call for ship-plots? NO. Now, if someone wanted to re-imagine Bonnie as a white girl, that’s white washing, and shouldn’t be supported (although anon hate is still not a productive way to convey that message). But honestly, when you’re talking about the RP world, which is SO freaking vast, if you see something you don’t like, there’s an unfollow button. Hit that and move on. What is the point of you sending anon hate like that? So that they feel bad because you’re feeling salty they didn’t reply to you? GET OVER IT. Because guess what – that person likely has a hundred other people to plot with them, including their fav ship blogs. Stop being salty and envious and vomiting your own anger on people. It’s rude.

GET OVER IT, and stop shaming people for shipping.

Cuz honestly, you have no idea what is going on in that person’s life. I don’t like writing fluff usually, but I reached out to my fav one day for some fluffy threads because something very tragic had happened and I needed something light that made me happy. Maybe she was just feeling a little shippy at the moment, maybe she needed to believe that love existed in the world. You can choose to not interact with a mun because they are genre-centered, and choose to unfollow because of it, but don’t send hate.

There’s rarely, EVER, a reason to send hate. Don’t be THAT person.

And if you get it...delete it. Don’t give them the satisfaction that they effected you.

Hi Elliot! So glad to see you're back in the RP world! If you don't mind, I was hoping I might be able to ask you something. I've been working on an RP since January with a co-admin, and it's something that I'm passionate about creating. The problem is, my co-mod hasn't contacted me for quite a long time. We were contacting each other from RP blogs, and I think the RP her blog was for died. I have no other way of contacting her. Would it be wrong of me to do the RP on my own? (1/2)

(2/2) I was thinking of sending her a message explaining this, saying that I’d love to keep working with her, and if she wants to keep going, just to contact me and we’d continue as normal. Would that be the right thing to do? I’d change the plot to make sure I don’t steal any ideas of hers. When we were talking, I did the graphics and I was the only one at that point who was writing bios. Is the path I’m thinking of reasonable, or would you recommend something else? I’m not sure what “quite a long time” means, since that can be different for everyone. I’d say if it’s been a month and she’s been MIA, it’s unlikely that they’ll return – that’s just the nature of the RP world. Anyone is free to make an RPG whenever they wish to. You can co-admin 3 RPs AND create your own if you feel you have time to do so. Because you’re willing to do a different plot, and you’re being sensitive to the possibility of stealing someone else’s work, I’d say go for it. If you feel she would be a good co-admin if she returns, feel free to message her, but you’re under no obligation to. Because you did the graphics yourself, if you want to use those I’d say go ahead, but be careful when you’re pulling bios. The ones you wrote yourself would be OK, but any that she wrote I would leave out and just re-write out of respect for her. You’re likely going to need to re-write or alter the bios based on the new plot you’re doing.

What On-Blog Advertising Means to the RP Community

Hey Grey Shades!!

Tumblr is just releasing a new advertising program which at first blush seems very similar to YouTube’s Partnership programming with ad revenue. It’s how YouTube is able to be primarily a free service (unless you sign up for YouTube Red, a subscription based fee service that removes ads and gives you special Red content for those who have partnered with Red). It’s actually a very smart thing for Tumblr to do, as both social medias share similar demographics and it’s a way for Tumblr to monetise the platform, and doesn’t surprise me now that they’ve released live stream video.

However…

When you see YouTubers who have made it big, and are living off their channels as a viable source of income, it’s not from ad dollars from partnership programs. It’s actually from direct sponsorship from brands that either approach them or that they approach. They then sign contracts that exchange goods (money, further marketing, etc.) for services (promotion by the YouTuber of their product or service on their channel). For those YouTubers who have been able to make YouTube a living, ad revenue is actually only about 20%-30% of their income. The rest of that percentage is actually from sponsorship deals.

The basic idea is that advertisers pay YouTube to display their ads on videos. You allow the platform to display the ads on your content, and you get a cut of that cash they were paid based on number of views (usually Xcents per thousand). Then, when you’ve accumulated $100+ you can cash out and YouTube sends you a check. I will preface that it takes some people a couple years to get that first $100 though…

Tumblr has yet to release the details of how this Partnership program will work, but I would assume they are taking YouTube as a template. The difference is, however, that you can choose which videos get monetised and which do not; as a content creator you get to choose which videos have ads on them. The flaw that I am seeing so far in Tumblr’s delivery is that they’re asking full access to people’s blogs (and obviously with this first roll out have made some people mad by breaking their themes).

So…it’s exciting. I’m excited as a YouTuber who has a tumblog to support her content to see what they’re going to do with it…but even so, I likely wouldn’t end up using it as sponsorship deals are really the way to go; not that those who do choose to use it are making a poor choice – it’s a personal preference. I CERTAINLY wouldn’t use it on my RPH or on Indie/Character blogs that use FCs because there can be an issue of you making money using someone’s face…that’s a thing. It’s called using their name or likeness. So while I use my own name (Elliot) for this RPH, I use Ebba Zingmark as a mascot, and if I signed up for the Partnership Program and got money from ads, she could sue me, because I am making money while using her face (likeness). So I caution all RP accounts to turn off their On-blog Advertising.

TL;DR: I am assuming at this point it’s similar, but we’ll just have to wait and see! If you’re in the RPC and use a mascot/FC – Turn It Off.

Click the ‘person’ icon in the top right

Select ‘Settings’

Select your blog from the column on the right

Scroll down to the ‘Advertising’ section

Shut that shit off.

You have to do it for all blogs individually, including side blogs.

hey everyone! as of tonight we’ve pushed an update that should fix autoplaying audio/video in all of the situations that it occurs, whether triggered by Anti-Capitalism, Blacklist, or another third-party tool. thanks for sticking with us while we trudge waist deep together through the mire of code that comprises Tumblr. trust me—this was truly a sticky bug to unravel.

This update is part of XKit Patches version 6.4.0. You can update XKit Patches using the “Update All” button:

I just left my husband alone with our two children for sixteen days. I was not worried about anything regarding the house, their food, or their wellbeing. I put all the appointments in the family calendar and my husband checked it and kept them. I literally did not worry about them. I missed them, and I was sad that they missed me, but I didn’t worry about them AT ALL. I need to impress upon you all that I missed their company, but was not worried for their welfare.

I also did no meal prep. I don’t even think I went shopping right before I left.

This is not about apples and oranges. This isn’t even about my husband. This is about the fact that this is apparently WEIRD.

Another mum at my daughter’s school is leaving for ten days. She’s taking her youngest (who is a very small baby) and leaving her husband with their two girls. She has been cooking for days preparing freezer meals. She’s panicking and deputizing her six year old to remind him how to make school lunches. AND I AM APPALLED.

A) He is definitely not helpless. (He’s a doctor or something.) What gendered bullshit. B) THAT LITTLE GIRL IS NOT OLD ENOUGH TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR HER AND HER SISTER’S WELLBEING. WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK. C) Why is she married to this person and creating children with him if he’s this big of an idiot?

While she was laughingly recounting this, the other mums were nodding and smiling sympathetically, like oh yes, I too have my caveman at home!! Such managing required! I was the only one who was like “Dude, he’ll be fine. Literally. He will be fine.” I said it a lot. She was not convinced. She kept bringing up her older daughter. She’ll be like a little mum!

OK, but this literally happened to me at a sorority alumni meeting, and I’m not very well known for thinking about things before I open up my mouth and said “So..wait, you’re basically using your husband for his sperm and his cash...but have decided he’s useless in every other fashion...and then TALK BEHIND HIS BACK to make yourself feel worthy?”

I was called out for my “rude” behaviour, and basically told that men were stupid, especially when it came to domestic chores. Perturbed by this notion, I asked if they thought their daddies were stupid men, and of course I got “Oh no, my father is the smartest” blah blah blah, daddy’s little girl bull shit.

So, basically what you’re saying, is because you refuse to hold yourself accountable to educate yourself so that you can have a conversation with adults, you’ve demasculinized and infantised the man you’ve chosen to marry as a way to control a situation. You think you’ve made yourself INDISPENSABLE so that he must stick around because he can’t POSSIBLY take care of himself, not because he loves you... Newsflash ladies, you’re not indispensable and until you treat your partner like an equal, there will always be a threat of imbalance in your relationship. Imbalance causes resentment. Resentment leads to divorce.

So, how about we break off these gender roles that haven’t suited ANYONE since the 50s when they were created, and share equal responsibility and teach out children equality and the fact that what their sex or gender is has NOTHING to do with their ability to do ANYTHING? Or...you can go back to popping your kid’s Adderall because you “just don’t know how people DO this” when you refuse to ask for help, tell your partners they’ve done it wrong when they TRY, and take on too much to fill your ENDLESS VOID OF INADEQUACY THAT THOSE SAME GENDER ROLES GAVE YOU...

The latest on Tumblr News

So the contracts got signed, and Verizon owns Tumblr. With this comes a lot of strategic planning and market outreach, which means that Verizon is basically going to be allowing the Yahoo! services to work independently likely into the first quarter of 2017 while they come up with agendas for each of the services.

One thing that has been identified is that Yahoo! and Tumblr integrated sales teams making it difficult to sell either product as things became more generalised. It sounds like under a new leadership team, Tumblr will be disengaged from current Yahoo! services, and allowed a second chance:

"This could be a breath of fresh air for Tumblr, as Verizon—in many ways, a media company—can help bring the platform back to its roots as a place for creative individuals to express themselves," Schafer said. "We don't often see platform second acts, but in 2016, I'll no longer rule anything out."

Nothing is final yet, but it does seem that Verizon is seeing Tumblr as a big hitter in social media (like Google and Facebook) and that Yahoo! never properly utilised analytics to market it properly to advertisers (how big companies make money off of free platforms).

"What [Yahoo's] Tumblr alone could never tell us, potentially, Tumblr plus Verizon could, and opens a world of possibilities in targeting and attribution—both online and offline," he said.

Both of these quotes are not from Verizon officials, but rather heavy-hitters in the media industry, so while Verizon hasn’t come out and said “This is how we envision Tumblr” it’s pretty dang close!

So worry not, fair RPing friends. The future is unknown, but it sounds like Verizon has some hope for utilising Tumblr in a way that makes them money, but also provides a space for creativity (and lots, and lots of RP writing)! Plus, while late, they just release live streaming, so that’s good for any company right now...

Download Resources w/ Chrono Download Manager

So there are lots of ways that you can download resources (RP Icons, Gif Hunts, etc.). One of the ways I was first taught was to Save As the page and save the site onto your desktop..but you’re left with a bunch of files you don’t need, creating more work to organise and delete the stuff you don’t want.

Enter Chrono Download Manager

With Chrono Download Manager you can choose a type of resource (gifs for example) OR you can choose specific images. Recently I went on another Natalie Dormer hunt since there’s a bunch of her from the (horrible) movie The Forest, but more often than not those gifs are in hunts with 500 other gifs...gifs I already have. This lets me choose which images I want to save.

What you need:

Google Chrome Chrono Download Manager Extension A clear Downloads folder (or wherever your machine default downloads to)

Now...you could just download these things and press and play...but your machine will be a cacophony of action and sounds (as I unfortunately found out the first time I used it) so continue reading below on how to configure your setup.

Once you download the extension, click on the gears in the interface, and go to the settings. You want the Interface tab. Scroll down to Notifications, and UNCHECK the following:

Show notification when adding One-Click download

Show notification when download completes

Play sound when download completes

Show download progress

If you don’t do these things your system will popup and make noise for each and every individual image you download. And when you’re rapid downloading 500 gifs...that can be...horrible, LOL

Once you’ve done that, go to the page you want to grab resources from and click on the Chrono Download Manager button. If the first time it looks like this:

...just click on the Search magnifying glass. This will open up the “Sniffer” that looks for resources on the page, giving you a window that looks like this:

Anyway. I can see from this gif hunt there are 401 gifs in this pack. If I want all of them, I can just click the checkbox to select them all. Scrolling down to the bottom I can see there’s like 5 gifs that are only 48B that are blank. Those are likely just spacer gifs; I don’t want those so I just uncheck them.

If I don’t want to download the entire hunt, I can scroll through the sniffer and just select the images I want to download.

Then hit [ Start All ]

Everything downloads quick and easy. You’ll find them in your main downloads folder that Chrome saves things to as default, and you can move them into organised folders or wherever you need to have them ^_^
