Langdon coming back to work is normal btw. Pennsylvania has, in real life, a voluntary rehab program for doctors who divert drugs (which is the real clinical term for what he did). as I've said before, Santos's response to his return is completely understandable and she never has to personally reconcile with him, ever. but all of the like "he didn't get punished!" takes....like yeah. good. punishing addiction doesn't work and yes stealing the meds is part of the disease. a ten month suspension from your job that nearly destroys your marriage is a consequence and it's a natural consequence which is always preferable to an imposed consequence. I don't care about what ~feels~ like somebody got their fucking just desserts I care about what works. what actually helps people with addiction and allows them to reintegrate into the community. the show is doing a really good job of showing how that need conflicts with the needs of people who were harmed but both of those needs are legitimate.

listen, i am by no means a santos hater. i understand her and how keeping information secret just for the sake of someone who was obviously horrible to her is running her down and isn't fair.

i also cannot stand how her base instinct is punitive justice. drug addiction is an extremely complicated and difficult disease, and it can lead to criminalized acts because the literal act of existing as a drug addict is criminalized.

what langdon doesn't need is to be humiliated by his entire workplace knowing every detail about the incident that prompted his recovery. what he does need is empathy and a sense of normalcy, just as mckay said to ogilvie while working with the street team patient.

what santos doesn't need is to fuel the cop inside her head that is telling her that all her problems will be solved if langdon goes to jail. what she does need is an actual support system that can recognize the damage done to her by this situation and provide her with the care she needs.

i think everyone needs to KILL THE COPS IN THEIR HEADS. punitive justice will not solve every problem. it barely solves the problems that it does. what will solve problems is mutual aid, decriminalization, and harm reduction.

the thing is i don’t even think abbot would be pro ice. but if he’s present during the ICE scenes it raises too many questions. how would he treat them? not as a doctor, but as a fellow law enforcement agent? how would he, as someone who enlisted in swat during the trump administration, treat trump’s ICE? his being swat doesn’t exist in a vacuum. his being former military doesn’t exist in a vacuum. would he kick them out of the ER? or would he commiserate with them. would he offer them some water. awful weather, right? awful people out there. he can’t be in the same scenes because they don’t want to have these conversations, they want you to believe somehow that you can still be a cop and a good person. ICE is evil, sure, but swat? they’re cool! they’re doing right. they’re just dealing with those awful brown people. they’re SAVING us! besides, LOOK HE’S SHIRTLESS!

shaming addicts will never do anything to help. just because santos believes that, doesn't mean shes right about it and doesn't mean people need to back it up. shame, ridicule, and punishment for the sake of moral superiority does nothing to help those that are mentally ill. it will always only make things worse.

Listen, man. Where do you think ANY doctor on a PHP got their drugs?

If Robby genuinely misreported it, sure, that's malfeasance of some kind, but as long as Langdon never caused permanent harm or death, then he's not going to have his license revoked. Regardless of what Robby reported, I'm fairly sure the hospital has an obligation to look at the prescriptions written by their resident who's addicted to a controlled substance, so they'd find it either way.

Obviously, this show is not the real world, so there may be differences in how they handle it, but the people who are saying, "I don't hate addicts, I just think Langdon should be further punished for doing addict shit," are kind of telling on themselves.
