Will I ever stop being dysphoric? I am finally in a safe home to transition, but I still have really bad days- will I ever simply be comfortable in my skin?
The purpose of taking hormones and having surgery is to alleviate dysphoria, but it is not a fix-all solution. That being said, it can help a lot. Testosterone is incredibly powerful but you need to keep an open mind nonetheless. It will change your voice, but won’t make you sound like Morgan Freeman. It will change your fat distribution, but it doesn’t mean your hips won’t entirely disappear without weight loss if you have some extra pounds. A double incision procedure will give you a male appearing chest, but you will still have scars. You will most likely stink and you will get hair in nasty places as well. And you know what? Testosterone doesn’t care how you feel. It will make you look and sound male more and more regardless if you feel it isn’t doing enough.
Testosterone and surgery will have the same results whether or not you are happy with it. You need to be realistic with the changes and take victories where you can. I suggest therapy for everyone who have the resources to go through it. It really, really helps to have someone keep your thinking patterns healthy. You need to realize your body is yours, even if you may not feel like it. You need to learn to embrace it. I know I sound like half the cis people I’ve encountered ever, but I don’t mean you need to love the “female” aspects of your body. Those aspects will be fixed before too long. Not being comfortable with yourself won’t be fixed solely with hormones or surgery.
The further you get on testosterone, the more procedures you undergo, the further your “former” body will get and the more your body will feel like yours. I recommend documenting the changes even if it means taking a picture or two and recording your voice as you say one sentence. It is very, very easy to lose track of what changes. Everything is gradual. You may not realize how masculine/male you appear to others. You’ll surprise yourself with how different you look and sound even after only a year on testosterone. You may not sound like a grown man, no, but you will most likely sound male. You may not look your age, but you will look like a young man. Things take time and you need to find enjoyment in the meantime.
I apologize, I’m rambling. I hope this doesn’t sound like an attack or anything along those lines. I was in the same place and thought about what I wanted to hear. I thought no amount of hormones or surgery would change how I feel. I still get self conscious and only realize how ridiculous I sound when I talk to my therapist. Testosterone will do a lot but it takes you to realize how much it has done and you need to shake your old feelings. It’s much easier said than done, I know, but you need to work towards happiness with yourself. I know it sounds like absolute bullshit when you’re down, but things will improve and you need to make it improve as hard as it is.

Cue her squealing, "Where's Elliott? THERE SHE IS!" over and over while the whole room reads this email about me. Goodbye everyone.
