It’s midnight somewhere, and as a result, Rainfall is now available as an ebook!! Thank you so so much to everyone who preordered–it means a lot that you took a leap of faith on a debut novel!

As I mentioned in my preorder post, the print version isn’t available yet, but I’ll definitely let you know when it is. Here’s the summary:

Fate doesn’t take kindly to broken promises. After an extremist group called the Spring overthrows the king and queen of Hiedos, Hiedean god Larai grants Silan Baridu magic to save the kingdom. Only the Chosen One can save Hiedos, but Silan refuses. His sister Aurie steps up and promises Larai that she will defeat the Spring instead. With the help of a growing rebellion, Aurie works to resist the Spring’s regime, but how can she defeat them without Silan’s magic? She needs to figure something out fast. Because if Aurie can’t keep her promise, then she—and Hiedos—will be in even more danger.

it’s rainfall’s one-month anniversary!! WOW it is amazing how time passes. i feel like it’s been forever (although that’s probably because of the new year and the open sedition, i’ve aged like 5 years in the first few weeks of 2021).

if you haven’t picked up an ebook, now would be a great time! it IS available on library apps like overdrive as well if you’d prefer!

you can also add rainfall on goodreads, and i found it on storygraph too but didn’t add it to my pile because that felt weird. marking rainfall as ‘want to read’ is super helpful for me because if enough people shelve it, the goodreads algorithm will start recommending it!! (and the same thing goes for reviews pretty much anywhere!)

ON PRINT COPIES: i hesitate to say ‘i might have info about print copies soon’ because that makes it sound like i DO have info and i’m just being dramatic and waiting for a Reveal, but in this case it is the truth–i’m still working on getting print copies sorted and i might know how i’m gonna do that soon! progress is happening!!

Prequel 1: Aurie

The Sanfis’ smithy had beautiful windows—big, with room for displays and curtains in case the workshop was too hot to let in any more sunlight.

At midmorning, there wasn’t much need for the curtains. Rays of light danced over Aurie’s bucket of water, broken only when she plunged in yet another nail to cool. One more done, out of a possibly infinite amount.

Even as the water hissed and steamed, the sunlight was still there, sparking tiny rainbows in the air. It always was. There were no cloudy days in Hiedos anymore.

But only a moment later, the light vanished.

Around Aurie, the sounds of the workshop—customers talking to Gillo and Dendra, Naham and Rora chatting as they worked, hammers hitting metal and water hissing—fell dead silent.

Everyone looked up as one.

The street was full of Gardeners, dressed in green robes, marching past packed so tightly that the only sunlight coming through the windows were the few rays that made it over the Gardeners’ heads, or the weak light that glinted off the edges of knives and swords in their hands.

They were walking west, further into the city.

Towards the palace.

The Spring talked a big game, Aurie knew. They had a lot of ideas and she’d thought—everyone had thought—they didn’t have the numbers to back them up, which came as a relief to pretty much everyone. The drought in Hiedos was bad, but not that bad. Not bad enough for Guimond of the Spring to be right. Everyone knew about the Gardeners who died of thirst after weeks of devoting all their personal water rations to the Spring’s meticulously maintained gardens. Nobody knew much about Guimond besides his name. That was almost scarier.

And now more Gardeners walked past, more than Aurie could have ever imagined, with more green than she’d seen all at once in years.

“What’s going on?” someone whispered.

Gillo yanked the curtains shut. “Nothing good. Wait for them to pass, then go home. I’m closing up early.”

That sounded like an excellent idea.

Hopefully Silan would get back early from his apprenticeship too. There were times to learn to lead a life separate from her twin, and then there were times to lock the front door and wonder aloud about what would have happened if they hadn’t come to Urbo, if they’d stayed at home.

This was one of the latter.

Aurie set down her tongs, slowly, but the clink they made against the counter was still too loud. Loud enough to spark motion in everyone else in the smithy, putting down tools, taking off aprons, trying not to stare at the heavy purple curtains that blocked out the sight of green robes but not the sound of dozens upon dozens of feet marching.

She took off her apron, but then she just stood where she was, listening. Nobody was saying a word, in the smithy or outside in the street.

It was skin-crawlingly wrong.

Gillo was right. Nothing good was happening.
