ZINE: Autocomplet [2/3]

Hi,

Here is a second zine that I have made about my PhD. It is more specific than the last one (for reasons that are explained inside), it is also less exciting, and less illustrated. It is about setting up a Facebook Page, and using that as a starting point to think about how music and politics relate to the experience of using and being on social media.

as part of my phd (which is about d.i.y. music and the internet), i am making some zines about my research. im doing 3, so 1 per year, and this first one is just finished. it is illustrated by emma thacker (https://www.facebook.com/etfcart) with additional art by cherry styles, georgia levens, idiots pasture, and simon daly. you can read it online here:

also, as part of the funding i got, i said i would do some kind of evaluation about it. like, trying to gauge how successful it is in sharing my research with the ‘target audience’ (which is mainly DIY music people, but also kind of anyone not currently doing a phd on this specific thing). if you wanted to fill out this short form (literally 3 questions) about it with whatever feedback you have, then i’d be very very grateful. AN ASK: social media drawings

heya, i’m making some zines about my phd. the point of them is to explain what my phd is about and what i’m researching and stuff (i have tried to do a short explanation here in the meantime -- basically i am researching how the internet effects diy music and the politics of it and stuff). feel like what im researching is basically only of use/interest to musicians and people in diy scenes so really want it to be accessible and understandable to everyone. but also would kinda like to use these zines to do research that is a bit more free than what i would be allowed to write and submit in a thesis.

so one thing i wanted to try.... is to ask people to draw pictures of the all the different social networks they are on? basically i wanna show some different ways of representing differences between different social media sites. this is specifically relevant to my research because some academics are interested in how the ways that sites are built and used make certain actions possible or not possible.

so.... if you’re on social media, maybe you could draw the ones that you are on? like draw facebook, twitter, tumblr, soundcloud, just whatever ones you use. you can represent them in whatever way you want, like by sketching a shape, representing them as humans, animals, by using photos, just whatever basically. scan them in, take photos of them, any quality is fine. like, do whatever, basically :)

i won’t be doing any psychological reading in to them or anything, but using them as an example of the ways in which people think differently about the purposes, uses, and layouts of different sites. 

i would be very grateful if you did this.

if you wanna submit them to [email protected] with: your name (or the name you’d wanna be credited to), and maybe like something about what you use social media for... whether you make music or not (i am researching diy music but both is relevant, cos it might show differences between musicians and non-musicians). ideally don’t share them publically cos i want people to be doing their own thing and having their own ideas.

if you send them you aren’t consenting for them to be used or anything -- i’ll come back to you at a later point and check you’re ok with them going in the zine, showing you the context it will be in and stuff.

there is a deadline actually. maybe its like mid-august. but still i would do it right now
