Ready Players

I must have read Ready Player One about three or four times before getting the audiobook. That’s been listened to at least a dozen times while working or driving over the last few years. I finished Ready Player Two on Saturday and I’m already listening to the audiobook. I’m probably about two-thirds of the way through it.

Born on a plane ruined by strife and darkness, this white mage left home when her Planeswalker spark ignited—and she never returned. Elspeth specializes in community and fortification, wielding spells that build and bolster mighty armies, while protecting them from harm.

Elspeth wants nothing more than to sheathe her sword for the last time, and find a plane to call home. Violence and destruction have a tendency to follow her, and she is constantly driven to take up arms and wield her defensive magic in the service of those that need her protection.

Elspeth came to Theros from a war-ravaged plane, hoping to find the one thing that has eluded her—peace. Under the watchful protection of gods, she hoped that Theros would not be in need of guardians like her. But when she arrived, Elspeth was quickly identified as an outsider with powers and skills that further distanced her from the natives of Theros. In the wilderness between two city-states, Elspeth was attacked by a monstrous hydra, which had been responsible for the deaths of countless warriors. Elspeth engaged the hydra alone and, after a bitter fight, emerged triumphant. Afterward, she wanted nothing more than to fade into anonymity.

But on the Theros, the best laid plans of mortals often come second to those of the gods. Her feat of heroism has captured the attention of Heliod, god of the sun, who seeks to make her his champion.

I didn't know Monty Oum. I never even spoke to him. I only enjoyed his awesomeness from the periphery like most folk.

I'm absolutely heartbroken to hear of his passing and I've been stifling tears all night.

The first time I saw any of his work was when I went to PAX East 2013 and was treated to the Black trailer for RWBY during the Rooster Teeth panel. From there, I was fascinated with his work and did my usual quiet rooting and encouragement form the sidelines.

I don't know why I'm so truly heartbroken. Maybe its because he was only a year older than me. Maybe its because I too have allergies and the same issue might happen to me. I think, however, it's because I was privileged enough to witness an artistic great have a shot at making something he truly wanted to make and that he won't ever finish that work.

I'm not a very creative fellow, so I have and will always admire Monty for his creativity. The RWBY show is fantastic and the music has been a staple of my listening habits since it dropped on iTunes.

I was chilling out, resting my feet at PAX East 2014 when I saw him across the hall. He was walking into a room that was for diversity in gaming and I was like, "I should totally say hi and how awesome I think RWBY is," but I stopped myself and instead believed I should let him tour the con and enjoy it without crazy ass fanboys like me pestering him.

I wish I'd said hi. I wish I'd had the opportunity to let him know how much I appreciated his work. I'm sure he knew, but still.

If you have an opportunity to watch RWBY, or any of his other works like Dead Fantasy, and if it inspires you to do something creative, please do so. A great artist has left us and we need to show that his presence encouraged us to fill the void he has left with incredible creations born of wild imagination and the desire to share a wondrous story woven with mystery and magic and combat skirts.

Also, make sure if you have any melee weapons that they can turn into a gun of some sort. He liked that kind of thing.
