Update - Lady Theodosia’s Ball

All ten planned characters for Tier 2 are now up, so be sure to check those out, as well as [ this ] post, as I’m always delighted to post character(s) you’re interested in learning more about!  Also, be sure to check the new characters to see if your character(s) has/have any new connections!!  And don’t forget to check out the [ follow tag ] for new sites <3

Additionally, I’m happy to announce our first rp-wide event!!  To celebrate her arrival in Elsmere, (which she judges to be the event of the season,) Lady Theodosia will be hosting a glorious private ball at her home in Elsmere - the very estate she inherited from her dearly departed father, many years ago.  With the object of returning to her roots in mind, Lady Theodosia had all the apartments in the grand house renovated to reflect the latest fashion of London society.  Decked out in all the very finest Regency England has to offer, there will be absolutely nothing lacking in Lady Theodosia’s ball and everyone in Elsmere is covetous of invitations...or else plotting a means of sneaking in, without one!

the soul currently wearing edward banfield’s face is not, in fact, edward banfield

it’s his body, of course, and somewhere deep down edward is there, too, but the one in control of that physical form is ponos

the daimon of toil and hardwork, ponos spreads the desire to undertake some form of employment everywhere he goes

and he embodies this as well, bouncing around town with in blur of constant activity

daimons are, by nature, creatures who influence the moods and deeds of those around them and so, ponos could think of no one better to inhabit

than a pillar of the community - wearing edward’s visage, he’s able to spread productivity constantly! something which delights him to no end

unfortunately, it’s not proven quite so easy as that, for sir edward has a secret - he’s a hunter

and, if there’s one sort of person who is not content to sit idle and be possessed, it’s a hunter

and, in addition, his friends are also hunters...who are growing increasingly suspicious

ponos is perhaps not as worried as he should be, however - he’s as old as time and nothing has destroyed him yet 

ponos is more concerned with convincing the mortals so that he can continue to influence them

he also has a certain amount of disdain for edward, who was investigating the cares as a hunter until he fell for ELIZABETH

and asked her to marry him - she joyously accepted and preparations for their marriage have been underway, since

ponos considers all of this to be somewhat hypocritical - but he has always been known to judge hunters harshly

but the crux of the problem is that, while edward wished nothing more than to marry elizabeth, ponos does not feel the same way about her

particularly because, as a spirit himself, he knows her to be keeping her own death a secret

and, perhaps, more to the point, ponos, after all these years of existence, has found an entirely different lady to his fancy, DIANA SINCLAIR

and knows he must navigate all these things with extreme care...

what he doesn’t realize is that his efforts to maintain his illusion as edward are...troubled, at best

ponos does not comprehend many of the subtleties of human convention, leading him to, say, rudely walk away while being addressed

whereas edward was always most astute and obliging in matters of hospitality and polite society, ponos cannot stand inactivity

and there is nothing so inane to him as pointless convention

LADY THEODOSIA CHAMBERS (47) Janet McTeer - OPEN Status: Human Occupation: Dowager Countess of Selbourne Relationship(s): Hester Chambers (foster daughter/niece), Luke Chambers (foster son/nephew), Arthur Price (deceased nephew), Prudence Price, Julia Price, Lucy Templeton (nieces), Fiona Tate (companion)

the daughter of one earl and widow of another, theodosia was at one time a much-sought heiress

she’d been for much of her life co-heiress with her sister but, when that sister married an impoverished man for love, their father cut her off

making theodosia sole heiress to all his fortunes and estates, and thereby transforming her into one of the most sought ladies of her generation

the theodosia of today, however, offers few clues to a once-glittering career as a socialite

instead, she occupies much of her time, fretting about her imagined ill health and inventing new illnesses for herself

her relatives are therefore forces to fret and flutter accordingly about her, vying to make her comfortable and thus gain her favor

too little petting will justify her malice and too much will draw her ire, causing her hopeful-heirs to behave quite particularly

after all, the state of theodosia’s will has been laid quite open, of late

once, it seemed clear that she would settle everything upon her nephew-turned-adoptive son, LUKE CHAMBERS

however, he earned her enmity by returning to elsmere quite against her will to pursue a young lady of whom theodosia greatly disapproves

hurling the matter of her will quite into upheaval and inviting the hopes of all those around her of someday calling her fortune their own

the surest way to loose her favor is in lavishing upon her too much flattery - or by failing to bestow enough flattery

loves to wistfully complain that, had she ever learned much of music, she might have been a great proficient

furious about LUCY’s scandalous conduct in running away and scandalously patching the affair up with a much belated marriage...

to the man who had killed her brother in a duel, no less!

but she is arguably even more irate at luke for his disobendience - not for the least reason that it further connects theodosia, herself, with lucy

thus, she has come, in all her state to demand he take some sense into his misbegotten head

all the while threatening to disinherit him - much to the delight of her other relations 

though to their great dismay, her determination on this point seems to waver and gain strength and waver again, all without warning

and whatever may become of her vast fortune remains entirely unsettled

the life of alexander de courcy has not run smoothly

a powerful psychic, even as a little child, he would wake up screaming with nightmares destined to come true

for many years, he ran from his abilities, first trying to ignore and dismiss them, eventually simply trying to escape them

becoming close to other people became difficult, as too often he could see unenviable fates awaiting them

when alexander was 18, he fell in love with a young lady his age who brought him true joy, allowing his wretched mind to rest

happiness, however, was to be short lived

a fortnight before their wedding, a dream came to alexander, showing him how she would die

he did not flee; he did not ignore it - alexander decided then and there to stop it

atë, the daimon of ruination, would possess her and bring about her doom - but alexander decided to head off the daimon - and kill it first

aided by his psychic abilities, he sought out the daimon and confronted it, intent upon killing it

he managed to drive it out of its vessel and, fleeing it found the next living form it could - alexander’s love - and thus, ultimately, fulfilled his dreams

since that time, three things have been true of alexander:

first, his reputation for bouts of sarcasm is well earned

second, he avoids caring too much for anyone he might loose

third, he specializes in hunting daimon and it is daimon who have brought him to elsmere, now

atë is not here, now, but he is confident the daimon, who dogs him, will make itself known, sooner or later, and he means to kill it when it does

in the mean time, edward banfield’s odd behavior has been noted by MILES BARRINGTON, a mutual friend of edward and alexander

who called alexander here for two purposes: to drive out PONOS, and to meet with a young hunter named SOPHIA FLETCHER

sophia appears to be a gifted psychic in her own right, and seeks someone to help her

alexander knows well the pain that lies before her, but he wonders if he would prove more a help...or hinderance to her in her time of need

percy is not one to be kept in ignorance

whether this circumstance is the result of incredible luck or a perservering wit remains mysterious, but he has a way of finding things out

his knowledge of the supernatural, for example, dates back to an era - not so very long ago - in which he inadvertently helped the FLETCHERS

they were attempting to drive a daemon out of a human to free the human, but they were reciting certain latin phrases...

when percy quite literally tripped into the room, holding a brass candlestick, and accidentally hit the man with it

the daimon, PONOS, vulnerable to brass, was finally driven out and percy learned several secrets all at once: the supernatural’s and the fletchers’

percy has been known for some time as a dissolute young man, gambling away his inheritance

the son of the marquess of montarran, (himself holding the courtesy title of earl of selkirk,) percy was raised in the lap of luxury and lives in ease

though the concern he causes his venerable parents is unending, who have attempted to get him to settle down twice

the first was by arranging an engagement with the lovely and prominent HENRIETTA DE VRIES

for a little time the engagement held, but henrietta soon fell for percy’s carousing friend, NICHOLAS TEMPLETON, and chose him

with his own reputation already in tatters, percy publicly jilted henrietta, in order to save her good name, and served as a witness to their wedding

horrified that their son had publicly slighted an upstanding family, his parents recently arranged for him to marry first DIANA SINCLAIR

but quickly, and for reasons percy can’t begin to guess, the engagement was quickly made over to her younger sister, ISABELLA, instead

confused by this circumstance, percy has decided to go incognito to elsmere to meet both young ladies and decide whether he shall wed one

in order to maintain this illusion, he has taken on the name ROLLO SHADRACK and is masquerading as a country curate

having secured a position as such at henrietta’s brother’s parish, where he makes up an increasingly ridiculous backstory for himself for fun

to see just how far he can push this whole bit, forever pushing the envelope with more and more outlandish deeds and words

he knows he can stretch this whole ludicrous farce rather far because he has engaged his friend, CHRISTOPHER BOLT’s, services as a djinn

and he’s getting as much enjoyment out of the entire ridiculous pretext as he possibly can

he knows, someday, he will have to give up his antics, but he hopes not any time soon 

and so, percy means to wring as much pleasure out of life before he has to give it up - something he won’t do without a fight

PHILIP HARDING (18) Tom Holland - OPEN Status: Shifter Occupation: Writer Various Relationship(s): Emma Turner (best friend/writer/interest), Louisa Barrington (best friend), Samuel Carew (best friend/djinn), Edward Banfield, Priscilla Banfield, Rebecca Banfield (employers)

philip is what might be called impetuous

given to great, vaulting leaps of intuition, his heart has him in a mad dash well before his mind may catch up

by and large, the result of this behavior has been...mixed

his instinctual desire to help EMMA TURNER, for example, has given him some modicum of both means and unexpected respect

but his move of engaging his friend, SAMUEL CAREW, as a djinn has been a slightly more...adventuresome proposition

so far, philip has asked to be a ‘great sultan,’ an ‘unrivaled explorer,’ and a falcon all within a few minutes of each other

a transition so rapid, even an energetic soul such as samuel is hard-pressed to keep up - yet neither gentleman is, as yet, daunted

his work for emma is far more steady

not only does philip give his name to her writings, allowing her to remain anonymous, he also pretends to have written them himself

going so far as to represent this as the case even to her publisher, all at emma’s own request, as a male writer sadly commands a higher price

samuel is frankly honored to perform this service for her - its the least of what he’d do! - but he does occasionally feel guilty taking credit

and wishes she might be free to be open, but he does not question her judgment and is always pleased to be a sounding board for her ideas

even knowing she (rightly) disapproves of most of his

he is, after all, grateful for her far sounder judgment which, he feels fairly confident has kept him from too great a harm

there is one great complication, however, to their very successful and mutually beneficial friendship

and that is the small matter of philip’s unrequited feelings

for some time, now, philip has harbored tender feelings for his friend, but he is well-aware they are not returned

and, if he’s being honest, he’s glad they are not, as he feels she deserves someone far better than he is

but, even so, some small part of him can’t help but wonder what it might be like if, just once, she looked back at him the same way...

isabella sinclair is noted to be a singularly charming young lady, a condition which has contrived that she may someday be a marchioness

the sinclair name is a good one, her family a very honest, honorable, and once quite wealthy lot, but time has stripped them of their fortune

now, they have little to get by, and still less as they provide for their even more impoverished cousins, the TURNERS

with these misfortunes weighing upon them, isabella does her utmost to create a cheerful and optimistic environment, loving to make others laugh

in truth, she may sometimes take her teasing a little too far, sometimes causing those who do not know her well to look upon her as a touch silly

as she is quite playful and has a habit of saying ridiculous and outlandish things merely to make others laugh

while her father was in london, he happened to meet with a marquess who complained of his need to find his son a bride

particularly, he hinted, a bride who would not look too askance at a somewhat scandalous career of dissolution

the two men quickly came to an understanding that mr. sinclair’s elder daughter, DIANA, might be just the lady in question

without informing either son nor daughter, a match was soon set up between the two by their fathers

when her father came home to inform his daughter of her future illustrious title, she was horrified

and isabella, knowing her sister’s heart to be elsewhere engaged, quickly stepped forward, claiming she should like to be a marchioness

because of her temperament, hoping it might agreeably align with PERCY DRAKE’s the marquess agreed to this shift of fiancées

though isabella has no genuine interest in percy’s title, she must keep up appearances, or diana will never allow her to go through with this

in the midst of all this upheaval, a bizarre figure called ROLLO SHADRACK has stationed himself in elsmere

and has proven himself quite determined to be an utter nuissence to isabella and her family

as though she did not have enough on her mind...

fortunately, isabella has always been quite adept at persevering in the face of hardship

CAPTAIN NICHOLAS TEMPLETON (32) Aidan Turner - OPEN Status: Ghost Occupation: Military Officer Relationship(s): Lucy Templeton, Henrietta de Vries (wives), Percy Drake (best friend), Arthur Price (deceased brother-in-law/enemy), Luke Chambers, Roland de Vries (brothers-in-law), Hester Chambers, Prudence Price, Julia Price (sisters-in-law)

death has taught nicholas a great many interesting things about himself - like, for example, the fact that he was, quite by accident, a bigamist

sadly, he’d been so blindingly drunk (though, having been so many times, he showed little evidence) that he did not recall the first wedding

and mistook his marriage to HENRIETTA for a mere (though unmistakably torrid) affair

thinking himself quite unattached, when he next fell in love (something he did quite often), he also wed her and thus became an unwitting bigamist

one marriage having taken place secretly and in italy, and the other in scotland, no one (himself included) was the wiser...until henrietta returned

she had been at the very most tipsy during their wedding ceremony and remembered the event quite clearly in its entirety

henrietta’s return having taken place only after his second wedding and the murder of his latest wife’s brother in a duel, the news came a tad late

his own mysterious death arrived the very next day and, from that to this, nicholas does not know what happened

all of his memories - even those lost to drink - have returned to him since his death, save the matter of his demise, itself

but he is determined to uncover the mystery...and, if he was murdered, he means to have vengeance

unfortunately, if he was, indeed, murdered, quite a few people have a motive (which makes it, he suspects, the most likely cause of death)

both his wives have a motive, given that they had lately discovered him to be living bigamously (and, in LUCY’s case, he’d killed her brother)

not to mention the fact that, horrified by his bigamy, nicholas had married lucy, killed her brother, and promptly abandoned her

ARTHUR, even in ghost form, might well wish him dead, as nicholas had run off with his sister, ruined him, and killed him in a duel

ROLAND, if he was aware of the union with henrietta, had cause as soon as the marriage to LUCY was discovered

the PRICES had been quite ruined by nicholas’ actions, and along with the CHAMBERS, had lost their brother

even his dear friend, PERCY, had been betrayed by nicholas, when nicholas had run off with percy’s then-fiancée, henrietta

in short, just before his death, nicholas had destroyed his entire life...and had given almost everyone he knew a motive to kill him

and now, it is merely a matter of determining what on earth may have happened

lucy will freely admit she’s made mistakes - in fact, she prefers to be the first one to bring it up, before it can be hurled in her face

her mistakes, after all, ended in ruin and death and they haunt her, still

and what was lucy’s mistake? falling in love

when she was eighteen, she met the dashing NICHOLAS TEMPLETON and a whirlwind romance swept her away

before she knew it, she was making plans to run away and start a life of adventure with him

the couple darted towards scotland in the dead of night, but soon found they were being pursued by lucy’s brother, ARTHUR

when arthur challenged nicholas to a duel, nicholas killed him and fled to scotland to marry lucy and to evade the law

lucy only went through with the marriage because it was her brother’s wish that she be made somewhat respectable again by it

but much of her love for nicholas died with her brother - though, in truth, she is sure she will always feel something for nicholas - she can’t help it

no sooner were they properly married, however, than nicholas received a visit and then promptly abandoned lucy without a word

a few months later, lucy learned that nicholas had died, because his creditors came in pursuit of her as his widow

unable to support these financial claims upon her, lucy has been forced to return to elsmere

she has determined to bear up under all the stares and scandal with cheerful bravery

since she cannot change it, she will embrace it - after all, she always has enjoyed shocking people and now it’s easier than ever

witty, charming, and clever, lucy is certain she can bring those she loves back around and, now, she need not bother with those she doesn’t

lucy has never been one to give up and she means to make the most of her situation - and the rest of her life

lately, however, she has come to suspect that nicholas faked his own death as, recently, she’s been seeing him around her...

there is, of course, an established method for gentlemen’s daughters to cure unwanted poverty

but marrying rich is not something that is of interest to emma

instead, emma has turned her focus towards her pen, secretly writing pamphlets and articles and stories, all to be published under an alias

emma is no fool and she is well aware that stories written under a man’s name are better respected - and more profitable

for this reason, she has engaged PHILIP HARDING to be what she terms her ‘literary agent’ - but mask might be a more apt term

philip brings her works to the publisher under his name, negotiates deals, and sees to the publishing for a small share of the profits

the rest are all emma’s to do with as she sees fit

this is a practice that emma has used for years, now, having begun it while still living under ARTHUR PRICE’s roof

she is all the more glad, now, of these actions than she was then, as the profits are all the more needed now, both by herself and her sisters

nonetheless, now that there is greater need, emma wishes - needs - to do more and is looking out for a position as a governess or teacher

emma is keenly observant with a wry wit, two traits she turns most successfully into lively and spirited words, and her books have sold well

lately, though, with all that has happened, humor is a greater challenge and she finds it difficult to find the inspiration she once did

she has turned her attention towards more serious matters, wishing to change the world for the better

with a passionate nature, emma is intent upon doing some good with her writing, wherever she can, but she hardly knows where or how to begin

emma often comes off as grave and bookish and shy of strangers, but she has a razor wit, a love of fun, and an enthusiastic nature

whatever happens, emma is determined that she will leave a positive mark on the lives she touches

rumors, henrietta has found, spread just as wildly in italy as they do in elsmere and so, she soon found, it was time to leave the continent

henrietta joined her brother when he went abroad, a few years ago, but when he returned home with his injury, miss de vries remained

at the time, the young lady was enthralled with italy and had her heart set on remaining there for the rest of her days...

at the time she was being courted by particular arrangement by the son of a marquess, PERCY DRAKE, and the two had become engaged

henrietta was enthralled with italy, yes, but she soon found she was especially enthralled with a certain NICHOLAS TEMPLETON

nicholas was a young officer who’d come to italy directly from france and who had quickly fallen into acquaintance with PERCY

the two were both fun-loving and dissolute young gentlemen and, due to her engagement, henrietta found herself often in the company of both

before she knew it, she was caught up in a whirlwind romance with nicholas and the two ran off together, marrying in secret

the secret was more on henrietta’s side than on nicholas’, as she was set to be her mother’s heiress as soon as she turns twenty-seven

so long as she is not wed to someone beneath her station - such as the penniless, titleless nicholas

percy, discovering henrietta and nicholas’ tryst, publicly jilted her to save her reputation and keep her secret, since his was already shambles

and henrietta spent a few blissfully happy months...before her husband abandoned her - pregnant

henrietta went to germany, delivered her child, and returned to find her husband - only to discover him with yet another bride

and now, nicholas is dead

unsure what to do or how to proceed, henrietta has now returned to elsmere...only to find that percy drake is also there under disguise

the two have agreed to keep each other’s secrets...for now

Tier 2

So I’m working on bringing out our tier 2 characters some time this month (don’t worry, I’m going to space it out from the opening of [ pnw ] so we don’t get flooded!!) <3 and I wondered if there’s anyone, in particular, you’d like to see!  I’m thinking it’ll be a total of 4-8ish characters posted for tier 2, if that’s helpful!
