Marble bust of Antinous from The Marquis Campana’s Collection at the Louvre
Giampietro Campana (1808 – 1880), created marchese di Cavelli in 1849, was an art collector who aimed to represent Italy’s cultural heritage, both ancient and modern; as such, the collection he assembled, proved a founding moment in the affirmation of Italian culture during the Risorgimento—the emergence of the Italian nation in the 19th century.
