Episode 1: Dress Shopping
The alarm was yelling in my ear, which meant it was 8 in the morning already. On a normal day I wouldn't have woken up this early, but today was an important day. It was my 100th birthday.
I was sat on the edge of my bed, my alarm still screaming in my ear. It might have been my birthday, but I could not say I had much excitement. In the elf world, your 100th birthday is a big thing. It’s when you become a legal adult, not just one in spirit as my mother says.
“Alera, turn off that alarm! And get down here, breakfast is almost ready!”
“On my way Mother!” I yelled back. I did not really fancy any breakfast, but last time I didn't eat breakfast Mother went berserk. I would like to keep this day as civil as possible.
I finally turned off the alarm and got dressed. I grabbed the first pair of pants and shirt that I found and went to meet Mother downstairs.
“I hope you plan on changing clothes. You cannot go to the council looking like that young lady!”
“I thought I looked rather fabulous Mother, would you not agree?” I chuckled.
“Fine, fine. But I do expect you to wear something else, and please don't just pick some old lousy dress.” she spoke in something in between light joking and actual seriousness.
“Well there went my dress options away” I joked back.
In classic elven fashion, I am supposed to wear a green flowing forest dress. I was not opposed to wearing that, my problem was the fact I did not own any such dresses.
“If you need, we can go dress shopping in about half an hour.” the way she said it made it sound less of a suggestion and more of a demand.
“I’ll go get ready then, Mother.”
About half an hour later, and countless fights with my hairbrush, I met Mother downstairs and we left for the shops.
“So what kind of dress are you thinking, love?” she asked.
“Well I was thinking of a neon orange dress,” I responded, obviously joking. Mother caught the joke and laughed along. Once she regained her breath she managed to choke out a somewhat reasonable suggestion. “How about you wear a light green dress, it’ll complement your eyes and hair.” she remarked. “Well, I don't have much of other suggestions so that's fine by me.”
At the store I tried on a few different styles, none of them really spoke to me, until I found it. A dusty green dress. The fabric hung majesticly off the shoulders, the corset sat snug around my waist, and the skirt was decorated with delicate pink flowers all over it. The sleeve that hung so delicately off the shoulders had fringes both on the top and bottom of the fabric, and bows sewn into the stunning fabric. The fringes continued onto the top of the corset, which had a couple of bows on it as well. The dress was beautiful, stunning even.
“This one, I want this one Mother” I managed to gasp out.
“You do look rather stunning in that dress, love” she answered. Once I got off the dress and changed back into my normal clothes we went up to the disk and bought the dress. On the way back home we bought a few more accessories such as shoes, jewelry and a headpiece, and when we finally got home it was time to get ready.
