“sometimes it weirds me out just how patriotic my country, the USA, is. they’re so proud. it reminds me of a little kid whose parents take them to church so the kid says hes a christian, when really hes just a kid who believes what his parents say so thus takes what they believe to heart, thinking it was his idea to believe when it wasn’t. because he’s like, 4.

and this kid is so happy, marching about in muddy jeans waving a little american flag. so awed by the colors hes waving around, chanting things in a crowd. only he does this more than a quarter of the year. and if any kid crosses his arms and says something is better, or doesn’t say the pledge, or doesn’t cry on 9/11, the kid stomps his foot and throws mud.”

“There’s a beautiful cathedral in my town that tourists go to admire. Its architecture is scary but wonderful. I want to go there when I feel lonely even though I'm not catholic (I’m a deist who mostly believes in Jewish things) but I’m afraid to because I’m a lesbian and a greedy person and a proud person and an angry person and whenever I sit there in peace I feel like i don’t belong. One day, someone threw holy water at me and I puked for the first time in 10 years. this was really scary and I collapsed.”
