If this hadn’t been enough evidence, Joe really needed to think better when it came to timing of course. Not that it was a priority, but he hadn’t exactly wanted to make Em feel like she was with another guy who only wanted sex from her. There was still a bit left for him to learn, really. “Uh oh. School hasn’t even started yet and you’re already in trouble?” He teased, giving a playful glare before taking another sip of his coffee. “I think I can take advantage of having you for a while longer though.”

“I’m not in trouble, jerk” Em said, reaching over to punch Joe in the arm lightly. “I’m just making sure I’m on schedule to graduate and all that bullshit” She was pretty determined to get all her studies settled so that she wouldn’t have to worry about it later. “You should really take advantage of it because I don’t think you really are enough...” She said, letting her words trail off as she got up and leaned over to plant a soft but quick kiss against his lips. Smiling down at her, she let her hand graze past his shoulders as she made her way back inside, glancing over her shoulder to see if he’d follow.

Despite how much comfort Joe had developed through out the time he’s had Em in his life, he still found it a little difficult to really tell when was and wasn’t the right time to just go for it. Sure if he were to get rejected, that wasn’t a big deal but to get striked out every single time? Well that didn’t sound so fun. It was why he usually just went with the flow whenever Em would be the first to react. How would he even know that Em would have been in the mood this morning while she was sleeping? “Something tells me that if I asked right now, then I probably missed my window, right?”

He fiddled with the corner end of his notebook, nearly ripping off a tiny piece of paper as he looked over at her. From what he could remember he didn’t really have much to do, except maybe working later in the night. Night shifts always tended to be the best, right? At least he had a reason to nap though. “I have work but not until midnight,” he answered, shrugging his shoulders. “What about you?”

“Yeah, sorry, already missed your window since I have coffee so I’m pretty much gonna be preoccupied with this for awhile” Em teased, taking a sip from the mug as she let out a small laugh. With a deep sigh, Em leaned back in her chair and mentally went over all the things she had to do that day. “Well I work later at four, but I have to go down to the store and pick up some supplies, call my dad, and see my counselor. But you have me for the next few hours if that makes you feel better” She added with a soft smile.

Just as quick as he placed the beanie over his head, it was also snatched right off in the blink of an eye. Really he should have saw it coming. She may have mentioned and used the excuse of it looking better on her, which he couldn’t deny, but secretly Joe had the feeling it also had to do with how her hair looked at the moment. He’d let it slide it for now and instead would just smile along. “To be fair, I think you look good in pretty much anything, so,” he said with a small shrug of his shoulders as he looked over at her.

His eyes glanced around again as he thought about what she said. The words processing through his head. Any other guy would have definitely took advantage, but of course Joe still had that innocence about him. Maybe last night it was gone, but it would always be there inside of him. “In my defense, I was worried you would have bit my head off if I woke you up so early. Especially if I was violating you,” he said, glancing back over at her. “I guess I respect you more than that.”

“Good answer, I’ve trained you well” Em replied with a soft laugh, only joking, since truth be told she barely had to train Joe at all. He seemed to be one of the genuine guys who weren’t always saying things just to get in hr pants. It was different from what she was used to but now that she had it she wasn’t quite sure if she could ever go back to dating or seeing the jerks she was so accustomed to.

“Well if I was in the mood I’d be okay with it, it’d certainly be a nice thing to wake up to” She said with an innocent shrug. Picking up her mug again, she took a few sips of her coffee and stared out over the city. “So what’s your plan today, you know, aside from sitting here all day doodling in your little book that you don’t let me look at” She teased.

His eyes couldn’t leave hers as he watched Em shift in her chair. Maybe there had been a small part of him that felt a little guilty for her being up so early. Somehow he found a way to blame himself a little, but he didn’t allow it to beat himself up about it. It wasn’t like he was holding her at gun point, but still he knew how much she cherished being in bed for as long as she wanted. His eyes widened a little as he reached over for one of his beanies that he left outside and began to cover his hair with it. Maybe she was kidding, but Joe liked to be catious. He even tried to ignore the lip biting she had displayed. There was easily days where Joe saw Em to be amazing gorgeous, but of course there had been other times where he was just blown away with the small gestures that were rather hot. Obviously this was one of those times even if she had bed hair, and it was just too early for that.

It really was a good question as to why Joe was up so early. He shurgged his own shoulders and took another glance down at the notebook on his lap. “No specific reason,” he answered before he let out a soft sigh. “When I woke up, I just figured why not get out of bed,” he added. His eyes found their way back up to her and gave a gentle smile in her direction. “If you’re tired, you should go back to bed Em.”

Leaning over, Em snagged the beanie right from Joe’s head so he wouldn’t cover his hair, “Nope, you’re not getting away that easily. Besides, this” She said, raising the beanie in the air to emphasize her point, “Looks way better on me” She then proceeded to put the hat on, sliding it back slightly as she made a face at Joe. “Also you’re obligated to agree on the account of I’m your girlfriend and if you don’t I’ll break up with you” She joked since clearly she wasn’t gonna break up with him over something so stupid, still, she figured he’d follow suit without the threat.

Em noticed the notebook and figured he was doing some writing or something. Unlike her, he probably found inspiration in the morning, whereas she chose the night time to get any of her own work down. “Wait, so you woke up, saw me half naked next to you, and thought the first thing you needed to do was leave? You’re definitely insane” She said with a nod as if confirming her words.

For the time being, Joe was sure that there would be a few more hours up until Em would wake back up. Though he couldn’t make promises the left over coffee would still be warm for her, but at least it would still be there? It was a silly thought that had Joe smiling at himself as he began to doodle some more, not realizing that what he was drawing was in fact, his girlfriend. Something he tended to find himself doing quite a bit whenever he was having trouble with writing songs and having his writer’s block. He wouldn’t really go as far to say that she was some kind of muse for him, but to say thinking of her and what they shared hadn’t helped a bit in the past would be a lie. He just wasn’t sure how she’d feel if she found that out. Probably call him cheesy again, but hey, he’s been called worse by others. He let out a small yawn to himself before taking another drink from his coffee, trying to be as careful and not burn his tongue like he’s done in the past way too many times before.

His head turned in the direction where he felt his shoulder being touched and saw no one. Well, he saw a figure but it was quickly heading in the opposite direction. Finally setting his eyes on Em, Joe grew a smile on his face. “Well good morning to you too,” he responded, letting a muffled chuckle fall through his lips as he set the pen down. “Are you saying I have better hair than you? I’m surprised,” he teased a little and grabbed his coffee for another drink. He was even surprised to see her be up so early right now with him, sure enough that she was probably resenting him for it. Maybe there would be that time where he’d really sleep in with her. It was bound to happen where Joe would wake up and see that it would be the afternoon after checking the time. “You’re not gonna put gum in my hair if I don’t cut it, are you?”

Em curled up on the lawn chair, bringing her knees up close towards her chest as she rested her head against the back of the chair and let her sleepy eyes drift over to Joe. It was way too early for her but somehow she managed, though that probably had more to do with the coffee she had in her hand otherwise she’d be passed out still. “Yeah, you really do, unfortunately” She said running her free hand through her tussled hair just to prove her point. Setting her coffee mug on the ground, she shifted in her chair and let out a soft laugh at Joe’s comment, “I mean now that you just gave me the brilliant idea, I might” She added with the raise of her brow as she bit her lip, as if she was actually considering it.

“So what are you doing up so early?” She asked with a small shrug, her curiosity getting the best of her. With it being summer, Em was enjoying the fact that she didn’t need to do homework or attend classes. While she still had work, that was usually later in the day or night since she made sure to schedule her shifts for anytime but the mornings this quarter.

Another school year had passed by, which only brought Joe closer to being finished with college. ‘Just one more year’ he told himself even if the feeling was maybe bringing him down a little. College had easily been the best years of Joe’s life, and to have it come to an end was a thing he wasn’t sure he was ready for but he also knew it was a chapter in life that needed to come to an end. Not a whole lot had really changed the past year. Joe still had his apartment just outside of campus and he still had his girlfriend. His really insanely hot and attractive girlfriend. Or at least Em was still allowing him to call her his girlfriend. All that seemed to change was the drawing closer end to school being done with. Well, if you had to nitpick, his hair was another changing factor as it had grown over the past months. But to bring back his style of dreads? That wasn’t happening again.

It was a bit early in the morning. Probably too early for summer at least but it was a damn habit Joe couldn’t break because of his early classes during the year. He was sure Em would eventually break that habit though, and get him to sleep in with her eventually. It was almost a tradition now whenever summer was around the corner. Still, he was up and outside in a lawn chair set up on the small balcony of his outside with a good view of campus and whatever else was around. With a cup of warm coffee in his hand, Joe had his hair up in a sloppy bun as he scribbled down on a piece of paper, trying to come up with a few lyrics for his new project. It wasn’t turning out so well, his hands coming up more with a few doodles more than anything else.

Em found herself face down against the cool side of the pillow in Joe’s bedroom. She could already hear birds chirping, which annoyed her because she had been so used tot he sounds of car honks and the bustle of the city in New York that something as simple as a little nature was enough to make her stir in bed. Groaning out a little, she soon rolled onto her back and stretched out her arms above her head, her eyes still closed until she peeked out into the bright room. “Ugh morning” She muttered out before finally sitting up and running her hands through her messy and tangled hair. Glancing at the spot beside her and noticing it was empty, Em figured Joe was still getting up rather early which she was hoping to fix for the sake of her own sleeping schedule. In fact she thought she had wore him out last night but apparently he was as resilient as ever.

Finally getting up, Em slipped on one of Joe’s old band shirts from his closet and let it drape over her small frame. Pulling her hair out of the neckline, she soon made her way straight to the kitchen for coffee, since that was always her first priority no matter what. After grabbing herself a cup, she soon found Joe outside and made her way over to him, letting her fingers brush passed his shoulders as she plopped down in the lawn chair beside his, “You really need to cut your hair again, I mean as cute and trendy as the whole man bun thing is, I’d still prefer it if I had the best hair in this relationship, just saying” She said with a playful smirk as she took a sip of her coffee.
