Hey eggs, trans girlies and the morbidly curious. Just thought I'd provide some insight on something I know can be difficult to find and holds a lot of people back from transitioning. Cost. Below is a breakdown of my medical care costs for transitioning. This is strictly regarding hormone replacement therapy and hair removal as I have not sought any surgeries. I know the prices can be daunting, but I hope they can provide hope and a plan for those who write transitioning off as a monetary impossibility.
For context on these prices, I live in Texas and I have no health insurance coverage. These are all out of pocket costs.
Initial virtual appointment for gender affirming care at Planned Parenthood: $228
Initial metabolic baseline testing: $25
3-month supply of Estradiol and Spironolactone: $72
3-month checkup virtual appointment at Planned Parenthood: $174
3-month supply of Estradiol and Spironolactone: $81
HRT Total Cost for 6 months: $659
The first appointment is required to get on HRT, but additional appointments can be turned down without impacting prescriptions. However, increased dosage will require bloodwork and a conversation with your doctor, both of which are reflected in my 3-month checkups above. After the first 6 months, appointments change to every 6-months.
Face and Neck at Milan Laser, 3 year unlimited service, appointments every 5 weeks: $4,594
Chest at Milan Laser, 2 year unlimited service, appoinments every 5 weeks: $1,699
Hair removal total cost for Face, neck, and chest: $6,293
For hair removal, these packages are financed at 0% interest so long as payments are made on time, and 32% interest if failure to pay by the end of the contract period. I pay in monthly installments myself. I would suggest that you likely do not need as many sessions as these packages offer, particularly for any areas not on the face. Sparser hair means less sessions needed. Unfortunately they only offered package deals near me. Electrolysis prices can be better or worse, but it can be hard to find availability regularly as sessions take much longer and far more sessions are needed. If possible, I highly recommend seeking a few rounds of laser first and then cleanup with electrolysis. If you have lighter hair, you'll have to do electrolysis as laser does not work on light hair.
