âIâm going to admit something to you right now, but youâre not allowed to tell me that you told me so, deal?â the redhead rose her brows, only waiting a moment before she continued anyways. âYou may have been onto something when you were talking about not bottling up feelings...and I may have been an idiot to suggest otherwiseâ Emeli sighed heavily, hating to admit that sheâd been wrong, even over something so small.Â
âGoodmorning - Before you say anything, I know that itâs early but I thought that you might want these back as soon as possibleâ Emeli was quick to explain when Valentina opened the door, unsure if she would slam it in her face for calling by so early in the morning or not. âCan I come in? I donât think we should talk about it where anybody can walk by..â
Emeli had always prided herself in her superior intellect, that was no secret, but a powerful mind only went so far. In fact, when those creatures had burst in, Emeli had found herself feeling powerless to protect herself or to protect the people that she loved. She hadnât felt that way since the night that Emrys had been attacked and she refused to feel that way ever again. âHey, Peter?â she sighed, turning to face him. âDo you think that you could teach me how to fight sometime?âÂ
âHas anybody seen Peter?â Emeli asked, voice raised to ensure that she was heard over the music that filled the place. She had been trying to spot him in the crowd but to no avail, but she was anxious to make sure that she got a photo of the two of them before they could get too carried away by the eveningâs events. Emeli had taken a photo with Peter in their costumes every year since they were in diapers, and it meant a lot to her that she keep it going. It was definitely fun to look back on from time to time. âHeâs the tall blonde one...kind of looks like a Disney prince?â
Mateo nodded, pursing his lips. She had a good point about him needing to sleep, but he rarely slept anyway. His daily venom doses give a normal person the affect of a shot of espressoďżź. âI donât sleep much anyway, but thatâs good advice!â He said, shifting his weight from one foot to another. âMy neurons are different, I guess.â He shrugged.
âI would love the help! Iâm taking Behavior Analysis right now and itâs harder than I thought.â Mateo quickly grabbed his things, joining her at the new table. âI was homeschooled so the school thing is new to me. Oh! I forgot. Iâm Mateo. I just started here.â
.
âOh, that wasnât advice. Itâs scienceâ Emeli shook her head. âHow so?â the redhead asked, perking up then. If she werenât trapped here at this school for another few years and had access to a real lab Emeli might have even asked to study his brain if it supposedly functioned so differently, but alas, it would remain a mystery to her. âI seeâ Emeli had also been home schooled, although, she had always had such a keen desire to learn that it hadnât been hard to teach her. âEmeli Nygma...its nice to meet youâ
By the time eight rolled around, Thornâs stomach was filled with a fluttering sensation that she wasnât remotely used to feeling. She hadnât been on an actual date in god knows how long â maybe the last time had been with Wylder? That felt like forever ago, and she definitely hadnât been thisâŚwell, as much as she hated to admit it, the right word was nervous. She was waiting for Emeli to come pick her up by her dorm, and she stood outside, enjoying the cool breeze. Thorn put her hand out over the grass and grew a tulip, plucking it gently so she could give it to Emeli when she arrived.Â
.
Emeli stopped before she rounded the corner, back pressed to the brick wall to ground herself as she drew in a deep breath, holding it for a few seconds before she exhaled slowly. Relax, itâs Thorn. You talk to her every single day. To say that she was nervous would be a huge understatement but the redhead was desperate not to let that show and after taking a moment to compose herself, she decided that it was now or never and she smoothed the front of her skirt down before rounding the corner, smiling brightly as soon as Thorn came into view. âWow, I should have save all of my Aphrodite material because you look beautifulâ she joked, trying to ease her own nerves. âAre you ready?â
âGood. Now prove it.â Val smirked, handing her the other vials when she agreed. Emeli, as annoying as it was, was probably the smartest person she knew. Where she lacked in charm and social skills, she made up in intellect. It was why she put up with her when Emryâs insisted she join their crew. âWe both know thatâs not true.â she raised an eyebrow when she said Emrysâ was fine. âAt least not all the time. Is it? Not without that little pill bottle.â Â
.
âDonât rush me if you want it done rightâ she sighed, clutching the vials in her hand carefully before she retrieved a box from her room to place them in, locking them away. The last thing either of them needed was her roommate coming home and asking questions. The substance wasnât exactly subtle, after all. âIâm not talking about itâ Emeli sighed. Emrys had been struggling for a while now, more so lately than before but Emeli had always been fiercely protective of her older brother. Sheâd do whatever it took to protect him, but she also knew that there was no fooling Valentina.Â
Valentina figured something like this would spark Emeliâs interest. Getting Baneâs venom wasnât like going to the store and plucking it off the shelves. Hell, it wasnât even like doing a drug deal. âA project. So can you do it?â she answered vaguely. Valentina nodded, going to take a seat. âBy the way, this stays hush hush. And that includes from your brother.â she said. âI know how much of a liability he is right now.â she didnât say more than that, but she knew Emeli would understand. âare we clear?â It wasnât a threat. It was a deal. Or Val would take her business somewhere else.
.
âOf course I can do itâ Emeli said almost reflexively, shooting Valentina an incredulous look for even implying that there was a chance that the redhead would fail. She couldnât help it, it had been ingrained into her since before she could remember that she needed to prove herself and that her mind was a powerful tool. She was secretly honoured that she was entrusting her with such a thing because it would have killed Emeli to by overlooked for something so rare. âEmrys is fine. But it stays between usâ she gave a gentle nod, agreeing that it was best kept out of Emrysâ line of sight. âCrystalâ
Thorn couldnât help but grin widely as she noticed the heat in Emeliâs cheeks, along with the smile on the other girlâs face. This still felt surreal, like she was going to wake up from a wonderful dream any minute now. She glanced over at Emeli as she spoke. âOh, the goddess of love and beauty, huh?â she said. âYeah, she canât hold a candle to me, youâre right.â She raised her eyebrows. âDonât you work fast?â she teased. âI guess you are properly motivated.â She grinned at her again. â8 sounds perfect.â
.
âI am often rightâ Emeli teased, smirking softly. âMhm, although, I wouldnât complain about some more motivation..â she chuckled, mostly teasing but as sheâd said, she wasnât going to complain if Thorn wanted to kiss her again. âGreat, where were you headed, anyways? Iâll walk you there firstâ the redhead offered, feeling bad about kissing Thorn and then ditching her even if it would be so worth it later. Emeli wasnât exactly romantic by any means, but she had been thinking about this for a while now.Â
âAnd yet you continue to get an incorrect answerâ Emeli countered, still not looking up from the textbook that sat in her lap, her tone bored. She hadnât been able to help herself from overhearing the other working on the problem she had encountered and Emeli had never learned how to bite her tongue when it came to proving her intellectual superiority at any opportunity. It was in her genes, after all. âTry it or donât try it, itâs your headacheâ
Valentina still waited until Emeliâs face stopped being the same shade as her hair before she spoke. âYeah letâs go.â Valentina nodded. It didnât take them long to get to Emeliâs. Once she was sure they were alone, she removed the vile from her boot. âConcentrated Venom.â She told emeli handing it to her. âI need you to make a version of it that doesnât turn a person into a crazy monster. I only need the components that make it addictive.â she told her. âAnd it this stays between us.â Â
.
Emeli couldnât help the way that her eyes lit up as the small vial was handed over to her. She had always wanted to analyse something like this, but it wasnât exactly the easiest thing for a person to get their hands on. âWhat are you going to use it for?â she asked, figuring that the chances of Valentina actually telling her were slim, but it was certainly worth a shot. âIâll work on it here. I have a lot of equipmentâ That may or may not have been stolen.Â
A huge grin spread across Thornâs face, although she tried â and failed â to school it into a smirk. It just wasnât going to happen. âThat takes up a lot of your time, huh?â she teased. âCause it should. Iâm a masterpiece.â She flipped her hair over her shoulder with one, grinning over at Emeli. She smiled softly as Emeli spoke. It was true â few people knew Thorn better than Emeli did. She definitely wouldnât say anyone sheâd dated (if she could even accurately use that word) knew her this well. Thorn leaned into the kiss, offering Emeli a soft smile. âI canât wait.â
.
âPerhapsâ Emeli answered, trying to be coy but her smile and her flushed skin made it impossible not to see that the statement was pretty accurate. Emeliâs eyes found Thorn in any room, she couldnât help herself. âYou would put Aphrodite herself to shameâ the redhead teased, although, she really did believe that. âI have to set a few things up for it so should we say...8?â she asked after pausing for a moment to see what time it was.Â
