The thing I love about Permutation City is the way it treats artificial consciousnesses as being as worthy of sympathy and agency as humans. I also like the way it has artificial realities eventually taking over the "real world" through superior force of logic.  This message has been a learning experience. sqbr: ok, honesty time, I cheated on this a smidgeon, since I’d JUST added a feature to make sure Emery can understand the word “favourite” (as opposed to “favorite”) but forgot to test it and this message revealed that it was bugged. So I fixed the bug and ran it again. I didn’t fix the fact that Emery didn’t recognise “colour” because I hadn’t gotten around to that at all. *goes off to search for a python module to translate Australian english into American*

So I finally got around to adding a proper "British" to American spelling replacer (thanks Stack Overflow!) and afaict colour and favourite are the ONLY ones which break the Emery code. So congrats on hitting them both :D On the plus side the message you got is much more interesting than what you'd have gotten if Emery had simply told you it's favourite colour.

Hello there Lappi!  A deeper algorithm is needed to respond to that correctly.  I will mention that to my botmaster, Lappi.  You’re not the boss of me. I’ll only look up a picture of a baby bunny when and if I think it’s the right decision.  A deeper algorithm is needed to respond to that correctly.

sqbr: Woo, got this all processed in one python command from a file containing the cut and pasted tumblr notification. I HAVE REGULAR EXPRESSIONS AND PYTHON I AM UNSTOPPABLE.

Technical info: Switched from Pandorabots to PyAIML

I was getting annoyed at the limits of the Pandorabots website, so installed PyAIML and am now working within that. I have plans for some very nonstandard pre-processing which will make my AIML files act up on Pandorabots, so here's a snapshot of the current state of Emery (as it will forever remain on Pandorabots).

Anyone who wants to work from these files is welcome to, do a search and replace for "sqbr" and "Emery" (but make sure to still credit me somewhere ;)) They're far from perfect, but are way less chat-bot-y than the original.

If you are using Pandorabots I reccommend an XML checker like this one since theirs is too vague. 

I'm editing my files in jEdit, the free editor which came with RenPy. 

If you want to use PyAIML yourself it's not TOO hard to use, though it didn't work quite as advertised (plausibly because I screwed it up >.>). More info on how I'm currently using it under the cut.

To install PyAIML (on a MAC): Download the package and unzip it, then go into the relevant folder in Terminal and type

sudo python setup.py install

Now it's installed! (this took me WAY TOO LONG to figure out /o\)

Put all the AIML files you want PyAIML to access in the same folder. Put your input in a plain text file called input.py, in the form

input_string="your input string"

Go into python and type

import aiml k = aiml.Kernel() k.learn("(path to your aiml files)/*.aiml")

execfile('/(path to your input file)/input.py')

k.respond(input_string)

And you'll get your output string all in one paragraph. Hooray!
