97: is ghosting ever acceptable?

I once accidentally ghosted Chris Martin for an entire month, so I'm probably not the person to ask. He sent John and me this very funny video pitching A Quiet Place musical. I watched it at about eleven o'clock at night, thought, 'I'll reply in the morning,' and then promptly forgot it existed. A month later, I remembered. And instead of behaving like a normal adult and apologising for the late response, I did what every deeply British person does when confronted with embarrassment, I panicked, buried the problem, and pretended it had never happened.

𝟐𝟔. What helps you to relax?

A very specific combination of things. A glass of wine, a good book, absolutely nobody needing anything from me, and at least one hour where I don't have to make a single decision. I also love cooking with my family around, long walks when I can actually switch my brain off, and those evenings where everyone's home and we're all piled onto the sofa watching something together. And honestly? My girls. They're also responsible for most of my stress, but they're equally responsible for most of my peace. Though if we're talking immediate relaxation, it's a bath. The kind where you disappear for an hour and everyone in the house is informed that unless the building is on fire, they are absolutely not to knock on the door.

(1010) what's the first thing you do when you wake up?

Check if my children have somehow already created chaos before I've had coffee. That's not even a joke. On a good day, I wake up, lie there for a minute pretending I don't have responsibilities. On a bad day, Violet is standing next to my bed staring at me like a ghost asking impossible questions before I've opened both eyes. After that, it's usually checking my phone, seeing what disasters happened overnight.

83 - If you could switch bodies with someone (for a day), who would you switch with?

Probably my children. Not because I want to be younger. I just desperately want to know what goes on in their heads all day. Though if we're talking adults, I'd switch with Anna Wintour for a day. Imagine the power. The fear. The ability to raise one eyebrow and alter the trajectory of someone's entire career. Actually, no. I'd switch with Stanley Tucci. I want access to whatever secret part of his brain allows him to cook a meal that makes everyone emotional. Though knowing my luck, I'd get stuck in Stanley's body right before one of his cycling workouts and immediately regret everything.

Marry Hath, obviously. She's gorgeous, she's charming, she'd write me love letters and tell me I'm beautiful every five minutes. I'd never know peace, but I'd be very happy. I'd fuck Annie too, because have you seen her? Let's not insult each other's intelligence here. And kill Stanley. Not because I want to. Because Meryl is essentially family and a living legend. Stanley, unfortunately, is the only logical casualty. Though then I'd have to explain to my sister why I murdered her husband, which feels like a lot of work. / @itsannehthwy

John: I’m looking at this text, and it's tearing me away from script notes. That's a hell of starter to snap a guy's attention ma'am. I honestly can’t focus on a single word of rereading and editing the night before. Don't worry your secret is safe with me, but if Spielberg comes to hang out for a weekend and complains about losing his title, I haven't figured out yet how I will console him.I've been thinking about that alot lately, like when I should be focusing on my work it slips in. Is it not hilarious we can both run massive productions that includes organizing hundreds of set people. Somehow however when it comes to the lives we actually live we've been letting calendars and flight schedules not only dictate when we see each other but also the tone of that time together. I am tired of the your house or mine separation of it all. Not to mention the quiet of an empty place even when the girls are here.

John: Hearing you say that you stopped being afraid and started focusing on what you want. is all I have ever wanted for you. If I’m being completely honest, even if it didn't end up back to me. Think it is clear my fear is we'd split and that somehow meant we failed, but the reality of now is even if we parted ways the beautiful family and love we worked so hard to build for ourselves and the kids that wouldnt disappear. But Im completely happy if not joyful that you want us back in the same space, it's alot of missing and homesick for you just around me. We brign to it just new headspaces about what we have learned that didnt work and what could work. And you are right we can talk about all of that for days or weeks, or we can just take that to action and see where it goes. I want to see Hazel’s overly detailed, color-coded movie night schedules. I want to let Violet believe she masterminded the whole reunion and give her full credit for it. More than anything I just want the mundane, beautiful reality of waking up next to you. I could take a few days to think about it but certain my decision would still be the same. The answer is yes. A million times, yes. I’m ready to come home. I just want to be your husband again with no asterisks and no separate zip codes required to it anymore.

EMILY: Well. This is awkward. Because I had a whole speech prepared in my head in case you said no. And now I've got nowhere to put any of it. Honestly, though, I don't think you understand how much relief I feel reading that. Or maybe you do. I think somewhere along the way I convinced myself that wanting this again made me naive. That maybe we'd already used up our chance and the sensible thing would be to keep living in separate houses, keep carefully managing everything, keep pretending that was enough. And it wasn't. I miss you. I miss the stupid things. I miss turning around to tell you something insignificant and realising you're not there. I miss having someone who understands every look on my face before I even say a word. I miss having my favourite person around for all the boring parts of life. The boring parts were actually quite lovely, it turns out. Also, for the record, your line about wanting to wake up next to me was deeply unfair. I'm in a hotel room in London trying to maintain some level of professionalism and now I'm emotional. EMILY: I know moving back in doesn't magically fix everything. I know we're still going to have conversations we don't want to have and habits we're going to have to unlearn and moments where one of us annoys the other so profoundly that murder briefly feels like a reasonable option. But for the first time in a very long time, that doesn't scare me. Because we're choosing it. We're choosing each other. Again. And that's a very different thing than simply staying because it's comfortable. So yes. Come home. Your side of the wardrobe is waiting for you. Though I should warn you, I've expanded into some of it. A tragic consequence of your absence. And John? I love you.

no, i don't think i could pull off an adult percy jackson. it would be a dream to enter that world once again, but i don't think i could do any of the stunts that they would want me to do. i kow i could get a stunt double, but i feel like it wouldn't be the same. the internet would lose it's mind over it. they've been begging me to make an appearance of sorts in the new percy jackson tv show. excited, nervous, honestly all the feelings one can feel.

See, I think you're underestimating the power of nostalgia there. If they brought you in for a cameo, I think half the internet would combust. The reaction alone would be worth it. Though I do understand not wanting to mess with people's memories of something that meant so much to them. That's always the tricky part of revisiting anything beloved.

we were all excited for the sequel, of course, so we had to go together! plus i don't get to go to the cinema with my parents very often, so seemed a prime opportunity and a huge bonus that you were in the film too. i can understand being protective when the first film was so beloved too, though i definitely walked away thinking it was wonderful. honestly, i'd never want to make an enemy of emily, no doubt about that! was it easy to step back into her shoes? i completely understand that with every press tour too, like even if you're excited about promoting the film, you just want to sleep by the end of it. which i hope you at least managed a nap before all that! or had fun in napa, got a chance to relax a bit. it's just non-stop for you, from what it sounds like! well, initially i wasn't sure how long my time off would last, but i landed a role and filming just started this week, so i'll be in cali until i'm finished! can't complain when being on set feels like extending a little vacation.

See, that's exactly the sort of story I love hearing. We spend so long making these things that sometimes you forget they're eventually going to belong to audiences and become part of people's memories. Weirdly enough, yes. It was surprisingly easy to step back into her shoes. The second I put the clothes on and started speaking in her voice, it was like no time had passed at all. She's just sharper now. Terrifying woman. Love her dearly. My favourite thing is that people keep telling me they wouldn't want to be on her bad side. You're all very sensible. And yes, Napa definitely helped. For about five minutes. It was lovely while it lasted, though. Then I immediately got back on a plane and resumed being a professional nomad. Though I can't complain too much. I genuinely love what I do. I'm just beginning to suspect I have a very unhealthy relationship with the concept of rest. Also, congratulations! That's fantastic news. See? You got about three seconds of time off before the universe dragged you back onto a set too. We actors are incapable of relaxing for any meaningful length of time. And California sounds significantly nicer than being trapped in a press junket hotel ballroom for eight hours a day. What are you filming? Are you allowed to tell me anything?

I think we've both accepted that's probably a lie. Your situation sounds much healthier than mine at the moment. Staying home with your girls sounds pretty perfect. Have you had to do anything particularly horrifying yet, or are you still in the fun phase where everyone's excited and nobody's covered in fake blood for twelve hours straight?

i absolutely understand how crazy it can get! i love how non-stop it's been for you, to be honest. i love seeing you on-screen because it feels like i'm visiting my friend in another life. catching up in napa felt like two seconds of hi's and bye's. we need to actually have a proper catch up, away from everyone else, without distraction. how's it been on set with john directing? you guys looked so stunning for the devil wears prada premiere. and me... same old, same old. kids, work, then more work, kids again. i was hoping that napa could feel like a break for me, but it was over way too fast.

One minute I'm in London, the next I'm somewhere else answering the same five questions. But once I'm finally back in America, I have a proposal. A girls' night, just the Holy Trinity. Well, that's reassuring because I was already mentally decorating our countryside house. And don't tempt me with the whole perfect housewife thing. I already know you'd somehow make it look annoyingly effortless. I loved our time together too. It felt like we got five minutes together before someone dragged us off to another vineyard, another event, another wine tasting. You're asking me not to be jealous while casually admitting that Rachel makes you nervous? Do you hear yourself? That's exactly the sort of information a wife doesn't want to receive. I'm trying to be supportive and evolved about all of this, but you're making it incredibly difficult. Though I will admit, seeing you happy makes it a little easier. Even when that happiness is being caused by someone who isn't me. I'm joking, I'm really happy for you, Hath. You have no idea how glad I am to know that you're giving this a chance. John? Things are actually good. Which feels strange to say after everything. We're taking things slowly, but we're talking. Really talking. Better than we have in a long time, actually. It's a relieve to hear that...Honestly I wasn't expecting the backlash my latest work got from the bad acting claims to the whole controversy that blew up from the monarchy theme when it was supposed to be on a fictional setting...but I guess I expected something different from a rom com while i was prepared for the emotional reaction from When life gives you tangerines. You are right, if you keep trying to please everyone you will end up losing your own goals on it. And I loved The Devil Wears Prada 2

I can only imagine how frustrating that must've been, especially when you're telling a fictional story and suddenly people are treating it as though you've personally rewritten history. At a certain point you just have to let go of trying to control how people interpret things because you'll drive yourself completely mad otherwise. And for what it's worth, some of the most beloved projects I've ever been part of were heavily criticized when they first came out. People forget that part. They remember how something ended up being received, not the noise surrounding it at the time. The thing I always come back to is this: if you're proud of the work, if you were honest in what you were trying to make, then you've already succeeded in the part that actually matters.
