My work featured in the Daily Express newspaper today as part of their front page story “New Pill to Hault Agony of Arthritis”. My illustration can be seen on page 5 which demonstrates the mechanism of action for the drug APPA. The news came as I am currently in hospital waiting on labour to start with my first baby. Shiney muscle time. Facial anatomy is still my one of my favourite things to illustrate. So this year has been very eventful for me both professionally and personally. Some of the highlights are that I got to work in California for a week creating a medical animation course for LinkedIn Learning / Lynda.com; I went down to part-time with my day job, giving me more time for freelance work; and finally 2019 will bring the birth of my first child and I am so excited. I am going to be spending January frantically wrapping up some projects so hopefully I will still have a lot to share! 2018 has been an absolute joy and blessing and I am thankful to all the lovely people I have worked with over the past 12 months 🙏🏻. Hi everyone! I have been a little quiet here recently but I am now part time at my day job (hurray!), giving me more time to do all the freelancy things I love the most. I thought I would introduce myself as you will hopefully be hearing more from me. My name is Emily Holden (McDougall is my maiden name) and I am a medical illustrator and animator. Here are some facts about me: 1/ My undergrad was in Painting from Edinburgh College of Art, The University of Edinburgh. Since I was young, I always wanted to be an artist & I am still passionate about painting. My favourite medium is oil paint. I started playing with Adobe Photoshop a lot & got a really small and old Wacom Bamboo tablet that is still lurking around a cupboard somewhere… 2/ By my 4th year of undergrad I was fascinated with drawing anatomy, exploring the beautiful structures conceal beneath the skin. I had been doing dissection drawings in the veterinary school & human anatomy lab of the university when the lecturer told me he knew a surgeon who needed an illustration. And so it began… 3/ I discovered MSc Medical Art course at The University of Dundee as the lecturers & students came for a talk at ECA and I instantly knew that was what I wanted to do. 4/ I graduated from the MSc & worked for the university for 2 years as a Medical Illustrator and Educational Resource Developer & I currently work part time as an eLearning Content Developer for a company that specialise in healthcare eLearning. Through this job I’ve learned quite a bit of html, css and jquery. 5/ In my spare time I like yoga, reading, running and spending time with my wife and my chihuahua going for walks or watching bad movies. 6/I’m also one of the co-founders of @sciartnow which is a new learning channel for medical illustration. Looking forward to having more time to get this off the ground soon! 7/ My music taste is 95% rock/metal. I don’t share my taste with my other half, I think she would get scared of me if she went through my playlists. 8/ I’m currently 23 weeks and 3 days pregnant so thought it was a good time for a photo before I turn into a blob. The sternum and connecting structures. Created on iPad Pro using Procreate and Apple Pencil. When creating illustrations for publishing it was hard to not get obsessed with detail. I am used to creating work at least A4 size. I had to step back and remember that the illustration will be displayed on a quarter of a page at most! Counter-rotation at glenohumeral joint. Interesting fact that the movement of the scapula when the arm moves backward is so limited because it is restricted by the ribcage.
