The Antisocial Socialite aka Ezra Squall
The Gossamer Line
'Finally finished'
I whispered in the suffocating silence, knowing that no one would answer nor hear me, because I was alone. I gently chuckled at the idea of me talking to myself, then looked over my work. The white tiles lining the platform wall shone blindingly under the light of Wunder. To tell the truth, everything was bright except the tunnel, which emanated cold and darkness. 'Scary' I thought. Then I shouted it aloud, just to ensure I have not lost my voice. The echo came, as if I was not by myself. 'Yes. Me and the voices in my head.' I mused 'Although I would be better off alone.'
When I started doing the Gossamer Line, I had not imagine the finish like this. I thought it would be a joyful, glorious, triumphant moment, but now instead of that, all I can feel is emptiness echoing in my chest. It is like someone is gripping my heart through my ribcage, trying to tear it out, but can only take it out piece by piece. Not a great feeling, if you ask me. Anyways, it does not feel as ghostly as it sounds. In the past few months I became used to it. It was always there when everything else had failed and corrupted, when everyone had left. But yes, as I said, at least it was always there for me.
It is still better than the chaos in my head. Something is trying to break my skull from the inside.
Then a distant howling startled me, making me abandon my train of thought. My hunt was calling me. I hurried out of the platform, leaving my work behind.
Squall, the Monster
'Monster, monster!'
The crowd was chanting furiously, as if it was the only word they knew. I came to a halt, forcing the trio behind me to a stop. 'What are you doing?' One of them savagely hissed behind me, but it was only a background noise to me, as I felt a haunted smile curve my lips upwards. It was neither anger, nor amusement. Only emptiness.
There isn't even an echo anymore.
Slowly the people quieted down, all of them glaring at me with fury and repulse on their faces. Calmness was useful after all, even if it was faux. 'You say I am a monster,' I said softly, but my voice echoed in the deafening silence 'but you forget one thing. Only a monster is able to create a monster. And you, my friends are the ones who created me.'
We take none of the credit and all of the blame.
With every word my voice became firmer, until I was shouting 'I am made of your shame, nightmares, mistakes and sorrow. The darkest parts of your souls, which you have always tried to hide. Look at me! This is what destruction looks like. I am far way worse and better than the rest of you.'
Don't let them see you break, they have been praying for your downfall since you were born.
I turned around slowly, my arms outstretched, back straight, and my chin held high. I could feel a burning in my chest, threatening with either consumption or explosion, but I suppressed it, trying to ignore the ashy taste in my mouth. My voice quieted down to a whisper, yet somehow it could be still heard in the large, vast space. 'Look at each other, at yourselves. Look, don't be afraid. Do you see the fear and disgust on the faces? That's their soul. My soul. And I know my soul well. Remember that next time you call me a monster.' I finished, my dark eyes looking around me coolly and emotionlessly.
If my ancestors could create these feeble vessels, I could destroy them. In fact, I could make them collapse and quiver in fear, if only I wanted to waste my dear time on that. 'Now go home and wonder about it: am I, Ezra Squall the true monster or is you?' The citizens obeyed without a word, the crowd slowly reducing until there was no one else but me and the Elders. I slowly turned to them 'It is not always glory which creates respect. Often disgust and a good deal of fear is more than enough.' Then without waiting for a response, I walked through the gates and left, forcing myself to never look back, despite the burning in my throat. Definitely not from tears, only from Inferno...
