middle  child  syndrome  is  something  clementine  knew  all  too  well ,    born  between  a  fellow  rebel  and  a  rule  follower .    she  eagerly  ignored  the  expectations  of  her  parents ,    following  the  lead  of  her  older  brother ,    unburdened  by  the  fact  the  wanted  more  from  her .

clementine  had  begun  disobeying  them  the  moment  she  turned  eight  years  old ,     tired  of  the  rigid  routines  consisting  of ,    piano  lessons ,    dance  lessons ,    tutoring ,    tennis ,    public  speaking ,   whatever  they  could  toss  her  into .    the  thing  was  clementine  never  wanted  to  take  part  in  any  of  the  activities  forced   upon  her .

her  defiance  was  met  with  the  cold  shoulder ,    parents  practically  shunning  her  existence ,    family  dinners  becoming  awkward  to  navigate ,    clementine  sneaking  into  the  house  after  school  and  avoiding  them  around  the  house  as  much  as  possible .

this  was  exactly  why  she  moved  out  when  she  was  sixteen ,    packing  all  her  things  into  one  suitcase .    it  hurt  to  leave  her  younger  sister  behind  but  she  knew  she’d  be  okay ,    she’d   always  be  the  apple  of  their  parents  eye .    room  was  left  like  a  time  capsule ,    an  ode  to  sixteen  year  old  self ,    a  place  for  her  sister  to  hangout  or  borrow  clothes  or  makeup .

clementine  moved  into  an  apartment  with  four  other  friends .    the  entire  living  experience  was  chaotic  to  say  the  least ,    think  friends  mixed  with  shameless  ( us  version ) .

she  later  attended  the  northwestern  university  in  illinois  because  of  their  prestigious  journalism  programme .    she  was  top  of  her  class  and  was  offered  internships  at  cnn ,   on  the  hill  in  washington  covering  politics ,    several  news  outlets  and  magazines .    she  worked  in  washington  on  the  hill  for  awhile ,   covering  a  lot  of  different  political  figures ,    the  scandals  and  bills  they  passed .    at  one  point  she  was  even  appointed  as  the  white  house  correspondent  for  her  newspaper .

after  leaving  the  hill  she  went  to  new  york  where  she  was  picked  up  by  the  new  york  times .    they  started  her  off  on  politics  since  that  was  where  they’d  seen  her  stories ,    she  then  moved  on  to  the  crime  beat ,    murders ,    extortion ,    that  kind  of  thing .

eventually   she  landed  herself  a  job  as  a  war  correspondent ,    going  across  the  globe  to  cover  stories  of  unrest  unfolding ,    wars  between  countries  etc .    she  was  twenty  six  when  she  was  taken  hostage  but  hostiles  in  an  area  ravaged  by  war .    she  was  held  for  five  months  alongside  her  camera  man ,    sound  engineer  and  local  guide .    only  two  of  them  made  it  out .

clementine  has  spoken  to  the  president  about  ways  they  can  increase  and  improve  the  security  for  american  press  overseas ,    but  other  than  their  meeting   and  her  one  story ,    clementine  refuses  to  speak  about  those  five  months .

now  she’s  freelancing ,    but  still  has  a  casual  contract  with  the  new  york  times .    being  in  los  angeles  again  is  a  bit  of  a  trip  but  it’s  been  comforting  to  see  familiar  faces  again .

*   𝐅𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐎𝐈𝐃𝐒 ,

clem  used  to  visit  her  sister  in  la  every  other  weekend  before  starting  work  on  the  hill ,    she  managed  to  squeeze  in  visits  while  she  worked  for  the  nyt’s  initially  but  after  that  she  barely  kept  up  with  keeping  contact  with  people .

she  has  several  physical  scars  from  her  time  in  captivity ,    and  has  only  recently  started  to  feel  comfortable  in  her  own  skin  again .

most  of  her  writing  happens  at  night ,   either   nestled  in  her  outdoor  patio  or  curled  up  on  her  couch .    it’s  easier  for  her  to  write  when  it’s  dark  out  due  to  her  inability  to  sleep  properly  anymore .

she  won  her  first  pulitzer  for  her  exposé  on  politics  on  the  hill ,   and  her  second  from  her  recount  of  the  five  months  in  captivity  ( the  only  official  story  written  about  the  time ) .

clem  has  no  interest  in  writing  about  celebrities ,   but  every  now  and  then  she’ll  pick  up  a  story  for  something  a  little  lighter ,    not  to  mention  people  adore  having  a  two  time  pulitzer  prize  winner  writing  for  them   ( despite  the  fact  she  goes  under  a  pseudonym ) .
