Reputation Management Strategies Goal: To finish this course with a deep understanding of how to be as proactive as possible as it relates to my clients’ reputations. Strategies 1. Attempt to incorporate information from previous courses in an effort to take a comprehensive to reputation management. 2. Use current events to create strategies for each occurrence 3. Create strategies for my current company in attempts to help with our outdated practices Resources This video on lynda.com says crisis communication, but I feel that it would help here as well: http://www.lynda.com/Business-Business-Skills-tutorials/Crisis-Communication-Fundamentals/182921-2.html
New Post:
I used to think crisis communication and reputation management were two, different things. There are slight differences between the categories. Overall, however, they are the same thing. In reputation management, you are looking to keep the client’s reputation at a certain level by adding positive associations between the brand/person and the general public. Crisis communication, specifically refers to the preplanning and actual execution of a plan during an unforeseen event or incident. If done correctly, it can positively influence the client’s reputation. If done incorrectly, it could hurt their reputation more than the crisis itself. Discussing this in as much detail as we did was probably the most important thing I learned while taking this class. I think my favorite part of the course was making the Crisis Communication Plan. It was fun to see the smaller pieces come together to make cohesive plan. Knowing that I have the knowledge base, skill, and ability to create a cohesive plan for a company to follow in the event of a crisis is really big for me. It will be an extremely large part of what I hope to do on a regular basis very soon. One year ago, I was just guessing at what this was. Amazing what can happen in 12, short months.
Events Marketing & Production
Mastery Journal Assignment
My Original Entry:
Events & Marketing Production Goal: To have a better understanding of how to make a promotion that will draw my target audience and create the desired attention for my client. Strategies 1. Use information presented in this course throughout my work life by creating promotions that will draw the audience base we are looking for. 2. Create mock promotions and campaigns from beginning to end to show my understanding of the concepts. 3. Carry out successful promotions for my current company Resources lynda.com has a plethora of marketing videos that I can watch and pull information from, like this one: http://www.lynda.com/Business-Skills-tutorials/Marketing-Fundamentals/168334-2.html
After completing this course, I can say that I was pretty on target with my expectations for the class. I have learned how to better plan my events, and the various types of events that I could produce depending on the clientele. It was fun to stretch my creative side a little when planning my hypothetical black party for the UniverSoul Circus. I also learned a great deal on how to create and produce a webinar, which is something I never thought I could do successfully. Researching and presenting information made me feel like I am finally becoming the PR professional I aspire to be. I was met with a decent amount of challenges trying to complete this course, but it was definitely worth it. I am proud of the work we got the opportunity to complete, and I think this has renewed my love for the Master’s program overall.
Ginger was a great help in keeping us on track and providing great feedback on assignments. She was flexible when my family emergency arrived, and I really appreciated it. It helps to have professors who are willing to help you in your time of need. This class also pushed me to finish projects in a more timely manner. I didn’t always succeed in doing so, but I understand the importance of meeting (or beating) my deadlines regardless of outside interferences. If my hypothetical event were real, I would have had to answer to my bosses for turning in my proposal late. I plan to have aced time management by the time this program is complete. This class was another wake up call for me.

Mastery Journal - Innovative PR Tools
Here is my original goal for this course from my Mastery Journal:
Innovative Public Relations Tools and Resources Goal: Learn how to build a more innovative PR campaign for any client using the most current resources and tools available to those in my profession.
Strategies: 1. Use information from my current job and the tools presented during this course to build examples of campaigns. 2. Practice using these tools daily in order to familiarize myself with them. 3. Present some of these tools to my superiors in order to help modernize our PR efforts.
I believe I achieved my goals for this course, minus #1: using these tools at my current job. I loved learning about the different scheduling apps and features that available to PR professionals. It is important to remain current in this line of work. This class showed us some of the most innovative ways for communicators to do their job, and anything that makes this job easier is a God-send. I also had to research newer methods and learn how to use them quickly. This is also a necessity in the communicator’s role. We must, not only know about the app, but we must also know how to use each app that can help spread our messaging for our clients. I’m definitely coming out of this class with more aware of the tools that are available to PR pros. I’m actually going to try to introduce the social media director at my job to Hootsuite. He’ll probably fall in love with it. Having to actually search for, download, and use the apps made a huge difference for me. I had to figure it out and write about it plainly enough for another person to understand. This made the information really sink in for me, and it will stick with me for quite some time. I’ve also started to look into more apps that are available, as well as researching new tactics and methodologies in general. I think this was the class I needed to make my successful transition to a full-fledged PR Nerd!
Legal Aspects of Media Journal Entry
What was your favorite assignment in this course? Please explain.
My favorite assignments in this course were the different hypotheticals that came with every lesson. It made me want to try to understand the information on a deeper level, so that I could know exactly how to apply it in the workplace.
Of the course topics covered this month, which one(s) do you think will be most helpful to you as a communications professional?
Honestly, all of them were pretty important. You have to know the framework of communications in order to truly master it. Yes, you may have some success without this knowledge. However, true mastery comes from absorbing all the information you can about a subject, and then applying it in tactical ways that no one else has thought of.
How will the knowledge you acquired this month prepare you to handle potential legal issues in the communications industry?
The information and skills I learned this month are truly invaluable. I know websites to help me find the legal information I need. I know how to read cases, and the breakdown of how judges write this information up. I know how to research the things we didn’t get to cover, so I’m set for the rest of my legal life! It’s amazing.
Did this course meet your expectations? Please explain
It actually exceeded my expectations. I’m not saying this for extra kudos from the professor. I honestly expected to be bored to tears in this class; instead, I have such a better understanding of the legal ins and outs of media. The real-world application method made internalizing the information easier for me. I guess it just really fit my learning style. For once, legal information stuck with me instead of sounding like Charlie Brown’s teacher.

This is AMAZING!! I had no idea that there were 29 black women working for the Obama Administration! #LittleBlackGirls need to see this. Prayer, patience, and hard work WILL PAY OFF! Keep striving!
Tip #25: Venture Out
If your mindset is anything like mine (and trust me, most PR people are planners), you know the importance of a good plan. You set goals and aim to fulfill them- to check them off your list. You might have a hard time accepting a detour in that plan.
As I approach graduation in roughly six months, I’ve begun to really consider my options. Do I want to be at the University? How can I go corporate if I don’t care much for cities?
My plan in recent months has been to work for my University full-time while working towards my Master’s in the evening. The plan seems solid.
But I don’t want to rule out any options. I’ve been talking with co-workers, bosses, other employees around town- seeking advice from everyone I can speak to. What I’ve learned is that my plan may just be a starting point.
A construction firm spoke with my class during my sophomore media class. I didn’t understand why a business built around building and architecture would speak to a bunch of communication students, but I kept her business card anyway.
Gulfstream Engineering is visiting my campus this week to conduct interviews. I know nothing of airplanes, and frankly am probably clueless about most of what they entail, but I signed up for an interview time anyway.
My advice:
SIGN UP FOR IT ALL!
You never know what an opportunity might hold. Public Relations is so flexible, and every single business needs someone holding up that end of the marketing deal to be successful.
My mentor/friend visited this weekend and shared that she too is venturing out. She is currently working for a media group (which she enjoys), but she wants to venture out from internal affairs. She has applied for everything from State Farm to real estate positions, and I trust that she will find her niche so long as she doesn’t shut any doors.
Just keep an open mind. Apply for everything– it doesn’t mean you have to accept everything.
Great advice! Thanks @practicingpr for the insight!
The roadblock to a more diverse industry? Retention
A new survey finds that many employers say their efforts to retain a diverse workforce are successful. But young PR practitioners don’t see it that way. Read.
Amazing read for potential PR pros! Definitely worth taking a look at.

This is soooo true! Many of us neglect to see the beauty that is already in us because we are focusing to heavily on the things we canNOT do! Look at your strengths, look at your ASSETS! It’s a lesson I’m learning to embrace everyday!
