First attempt on a new 35mm lens
Didn’t we almost have it!
Got a C for my first essay!
OVERALL GRADE : B-
Key Points to Focus On
Consider the scale of the finished product, and how audiences would view it.
Stronger secondary research, and then analysis of that research, is needed. It would push everything else up. Tightening up of communication.
Experimentation is good but could definitely be pushed further into more uncomfortable or uncharted territory. As in, take more risks!
Focus more on and research the physical aspect of Graphic Design and Designers that do this going forward, such as typesetting, serigraphy, photography, printing and book design.
General Comments about Work
“The shape of the letters are getting in your way somehow. These are nice at the end (the contour clumps at the end of the Typographic Landscapes process book). The idea is interesting but I don’t know the relevance of the metal.”
“These are nice books, as well. This is good, a great journey.”
“More of research – you’re a real maker and you delve right into it straight away. Don’t stop that, but support that with wider knowledge of what’s around you. Could be the subject or the medium (eg. photography etc.).”
“The Choreo Graphics project video reminds me of the start of the music video for ‘Heroes’ by David Bowie.”
“You’re good at experimenting with how you are going to make a project work.”
“You’re quite self aware, in lots of ways.”
“Your booklet may be the wrong size (too small), but no one else has tried to take their images and put them into a context. Trying to give the story beyond the vision. I think that’s quite good.”
“Research through the making of things is really important. Don’t stop that.”
“Broaden knowledge base, take more risks, keep essence of same thing throughout work.”
“Pictures (Still Lifes) – work better on screen rather than print because of backlighting. Maybe using a light box. Hyperreal images. Depends on the photograph and the scale.”
“Great presentation. However you’re working, it’s working well, isn’t it? Keep going!”
Marking Criteria
Research (C+) My primary research was described as strong, but more of a broader range of secondary research was needed. It was suggested that I should think more about conceptual concerns of influencing artists, to go beyond what their work looks like and think more of the meaning behind it. It was agreed between the tutors that my research is appropriately categorised and from a range of sources, as per the assessment criteria. It was noted that there is an instinctive way in which I work, taking on themes that I’m already more knowledgeable about, but could be strengthened with more research of the medium or the subject matter (i.e. typography, photography – whatever the project is based on).
Analysis (C+) The analysis of what I do could be more critical, which would help in taking my project in a more focused direction moving forward with projects. We spoke about the photography project (Still Lifes), noting that the subject matter of the photographs were more personal to me, so I perhaps approached it differently and struggled to highlight the focus of the images. Analysis was accurate, as I had changed the photographs several times. To get a higher grade here more focus is needed on evaluation. Research and analysis support each other as marking criteria, as long as the research is strong the analysis of that research is strong. With the typeface project, a broader range of research and analysis was needed and could have been approached in a different way. Accurate interpretation of relationships between constituent elements was recognised through my projects by both tutors.
Subject Knowledge (C+) Needs to be broader and more detailed. To get an A here, you have to contribute to a form of debate, something that you can only do if you are very knowledgeable about a particular subject. It could be anything to do with the subject of a project, that’s where I misunderstood the term prior to the assessment thinking that it meant Graphic Design as a whole subject. Personal hypothesis on something. I can do that by bringing in themes from Wales but I need to think about the broader context. Use the language to help articulate what you’re doing. Really getting into the detail of Graphic Design in a similar way that you would get into the detail and subject matter of the projects that you’re working on. Become an expert in typography and book design, not just running projects. It will help to communicate what you do. For example, talk to historians (Still Lifes), look at old maps (typeface) to help you gain a further understanding so that you could argue your case in a debate of subject knowledge. Develop an expertise that will help you give a unique look on the subject.
Experimentation (B-) It was noted that I was very willing to experiment with processes and materials, and to try different things, as shown by all the different iterations that I went through in the sequences of photographs for Still Lifes. The process taken during ‘Typographic Landscapes’ was praised and rewarded, though the outcome didn’t match the dedication. One tutor said that it was nice that my typography project was lead by making something first, and experimentation. I could take more risks with the ideas themselves, risks with how I communicate what I’m trying to say. It was said that the experimentation drives my work first, and that the B- here was a generous mark, but experimentation seemed very important to me but I could push it a lot further to support my work. The scale of my work is perhaps something I need to work on here, how I display and produce things.
Technical Competence (C+) Developing well. With the Still Lifes project, the tutors commented that they could see the decisions that I’d made and said that it was done well which should be rewarded. Evidence is seen in checking, testing and finishing. A comment made was that I could have done a few more versions of my typeface for the Typographic Landscapes project before producing the final outcome.
Communication and Presentation (B-) The way that I had presented my work was good, but communication could be tightened up in my work. It was noted that no one else had taken their images and tried to put them into context, such as the ‘Bare’ booklet that I’d made for Still Lifes. I had contextualised my work into an outcome which was well received. Given the effort that has gone in to contextualising the images gave it another life beyond the project. The B- was given on the strengths of the Still Lifes project, not so much for the type project. It was said that I had moved on so much since the first project that a B- was justified.
Personal and Professional Development (B-) The self motivation to work and learn new skills, even if you haven’t quite fully developed them, is very positive.
Collaborative and/or Independent Working (B) B for collaborative and independent working as I work well in a group and really well alone, and have a strong work ethic. Very positive.
