         “well, i always like to see the worst in things,” he told her as he looked over. “that way you can only be surprised, you know?” ash stated, shifting his gaze to the green in front of them instead. he listened to her talk, and it seemed that everyone was confused and nervous, but he wasn’t surprised. he’d be more surprised if someone was calm during this. “absolutely not. it’ll only divide us even more,” he stated, putting the cigarette to his lips again before nodded his head at her question. “yeah, go crazy,” he said, handing her the box and a lighter. 

usually she would have tried to offer some inspirational words, but maybe seeing the worst in things was a good option for a while. “yeah, i guess you’ve got a good point. no better time than now to stop being naive,” she nodded her head slowly. there seemed to be an overall sense of unease throughout the whole town. she was glad she wasn’t alone in that feeling. “you’re absolutely right, but i suppose it was bound to happen sooner or later. hopefully with the faction thing, it can be sort of a controlled chaos?” she took one from the box and examined the cigarette for a moment. emmi had never been a fan of smoking, in fact that was the cause of most of the fights she and mika would have when they were together. but, there’s a first time for everything, and she needed something to take the edge off. she put it between her lips and lit it before she handed them back to ash. “this is so fucked up.”

        ash’s nerves were at an all time high because of their current situation, causing him to go through cigarettes quicker than he used to — at least he didn’t have to buy the damn things anymore. he found himself sitting on one of the benches on the green, putting a cigarette in his mouth before lighting it. “this town is an actual shit show now,” he muttered as he took the first inhale of his cigarette.

“i’d be lying if i said you were wrong. i mean, i try to see the good in everything, but this...this is just too much.” she bit the inside of her cheek and looked over at the boy beside her, “do you think this faction thing is going to pan out or be a complete disaster. usually i just trust my gut, but with this,” she sighed, “it’s just too hard.” emmi had never had to make such a big decision alone and that quickly. she liked having time to weigh her options. “do you have another one of those,” she asked and pointed at his cigarette.

arturo tenses, briefly, eyes closing at the PRESS of lips on his cheek. emmi is good at the soft stuff. the stuff he’s never understood and never WILL understand. he merely stands there, resolutely, and accepts it even though he knows he doesn’t remotely DESERVE it. “you wanna stay the night?” art asks, easily, with a shrug of his shoulders. he doesn’t have any problems staying by himself- in fact, he prefers it. but he can’t turn emmi down. he can’t make her LEAVE when she doesn’t want to. he never talks much in general, unless pissed off, so luckily emmi mainly carries the conversation anyways. INTERESTING, she says about the meeting. it makes art roll his eyes in utter dismissal. the meeting was FUCKED UP. just another way for people to try and control others and he wanted NO part in it at all. “picked your little FACTION FAMILY then?” he asks, in a faux-excited voice. art shakes his head, working his jaw for a moment and staring ahead at his line of illicit products laid out. “y’guessed right.” he grunts out, with a shrug of his shoulders. he doesn’t want to be part of any faction, but he also doesn’t want to SIT BACK and let them make up all the rules either. art very much wants to ensure they disband, and disband SOON.

she moved behind him and began to rub his shoulders. her tiny fingers trying to relieve some of the tension in his muscles. she was the kind of person who just wanted to take care of the people in her life. with arturo, she just wanted things to feel easy. she tried hard to make herself feel comfortable around him. she didn’t want to give him a reason to think she wasn’t. emmi kissed his left shoulder, “you know i do,” she whispered. she wasn’t entirely sure if there was a label for what was going on between the two of them, but she didn’t care either. she knew where her heart was and that’s all that truly mattered to her. she moved away from him and sat on the couch, “i think i have. i think those kids have the right idea with wanting to do things equally, but i’m just a little worried they’re gonna crumble under the pressure. i figure if i stick with them, i can offer advice if they need it? i don’t know, though. what about you? i can’t really see you following -- well, anybody for that matter.”

art chuckled at emmi’s words. he refuses to believe that he BRIGHTENS, just slightly, at the familiar voice. he sticks his head out, seeing emmi and grinning widely. “nah. i’m here.” art says easily, tilting his head to gesture for her to come inside properly. he is standing in the living room, which is covered in ILLICIT drugs- all of which are stolen. it’s like his own little STASH. suddenly he is the KING DEALER, almost. “you texted?” he asked, casually, as if he wasn’t showing her enough drugs to land him in jail for the rest of his life. he glances back to the well laid out, and organised, ‘supplies’, before glancing back at her and allowing his eyes to scan her up and down, checking her out. “y’look good.” art adds, just because he CAN. “enjoy that little circle jerk ‘TOWN MEETIN’?” he asks, with a snort, and shake of his head. he REFUSED to ever bow down to authority, that’s not going to change anytime soon. especially not with these jerk offs mainly being younger than him. was that a JOKE?

a little bit of the tension in her shoulders eased up, but she wasn’t able to completely relax. she was just glad he hadn’t fucked with her, because she didn’t want to be alone for the night. she closed the door behind her and walked into the living room. she greeted him with a soft kiss on the cheek before she looked around the room. she hadn’t seen that many drugs in her life. she didn’t know it was possible for one person to possess that many illegal substances. i guess it’s a good thing there weren’t any law enforcement, she thought. she brought her attention back to him and nodded her head, “yeah. i just couldn’t stand being alone in my house for another second. it’s driving me insane,” she complained. emmi was an extrovert. she needed human interaction to feel energized. she ignored the butterflies that filled her stomach when he complimented her and chose to answer his question about the meeting instead. “it was interesting, i guess. it kind of just makes this all feel more real. and like people are just giving up and getting used to the fact that we’re all stuck here. i take it you weren’t a fan of all the decisions?”

the  town meeting had left emmi feeling an array of emotions, the most prevalent being hopelessness. the whole  dividing into groups thing and deciding that they needed to work together to survive made everything so real. it was pretty easy for her to decide who she was going to align with. equality made the most sense to her. she just hoped that the two teens who decided to take charge wouldn’t crumble under the pressure. they weren’t too far apart in age, but emmi knew things now that she hadn’t before. she didn’t realize how naive she was as a teenager until she was in her twenties. she would try to help them in whatever way she could, but for the most part she just wanted to lay low. keep to herself. she could focus her energy on trying to find a way back home. she had never gone a day without talking to her mom and she felt lost without her. she had never felt so alone in her life and she didn’t know how to cope. she needed something to distract herself from the thoughts running through her head, so  she texted the one person who had always been able to calm her nerves. mika. she ended up writing and deleting the text and rewriting it about ten times. she couldn’t find the right words to say. she didn’t want to seem like she couldn’t handle being alone or that she was desperate. she took a deep breath and typed “can you come over? i think i’m having a breakdown.” she finally hit the send button and threw her phone away from her. she really hated that she had anxiety just texting him. he was someone she loved so much for a period of her life (part of her still loved him, of couse). but it was just hard. she didn’t want him to think that she had been stuck in her heartbreak. she didn’t want him to worry about her.

emmi had been making a lot of bad decisions lately, but she was pretty sure going to art’s place was at the very top of list. she hated how easily she fell for his charm and his deceivingly good looks. she honestly thought she was smarter than that. she knew his reputation. hell, the whole town did. but she was plagued by her mother’s taste in men and she always seemed to fall for the boys she knew would break her heart. she honestly hadn’t even expected him to reply to her when she asked him if he was busy, but he did and now she was standing in front of a door. there was an unfamiliar knot at the pit of her stomach when she finally knocked on the front door. she couldn’t help but feel nervous around him - which in turn made her feel pathetic. emmi knocked again after a minute and decided to just go inside, because of course the door was unlocked. “art? are you actually here or did you decide to be an asshole and send me the wrong address.”

this question triggered a lot of fleeting thoughts across the rookie cop’s mind. most specifically, the fact he was holding himself up on a carbon fiber pylon instead of an actual leg now. or the fact he suffered from that spinal injury too. and, it stood without question, his entire family and town disappearing aside from jake and the few fortunates that had begun that stupid journey which a part of him was almost coming to blame as the cause of this whole fiasco.

mickey’s smile felt thin indeed. “you might say that,” he responded vaguely, keeping these thoughts and the depressed feeling creeping up on the inside to himself. this wasn’t anything to burden poor emmi with, especially not after they just ‘reunited’ and she was probably worried sick over a thousand other things at the moment, anyway. his problems wouldn’t compare. “you’re not in shape?” mickey questioned with a doubtful glance down, an invisible comment there that she looked fine to him. “oh ah.. not too much,” the male hedged then, rubbing the back of his neck, uncomfortable with lying to her, “just the road’s all covered in debris from that storm so it’s probably not a good idea to head this way until we get some people out to clear it, that’s all.”

she was glad to see that he was also a bit apprehensive towards their interaction. it would have been way too weird for them to just jump back where they left off and act like nothing had happened. as far as emmi was concerned, they were two totally different people now. “well, i’m regretting it big time. i never thought i could hate this town more than i did, but now that i’m stuck in it, i’ve seemed to prove myself wrong.”  the small talk was a little frustrating, but she wasn’t sure if she wanted to have a conversation that went deeper than surface lever at that particular moment. she was still tired and seeing him was a complete shock. she needed time to prepare. “um, not as much as i was in high school. i’m majoring in music education, so my focus shifted to that instead of sports. i sort of let myself go a bit,” she shrugged. she wasn’t unhealthy by any means, she just wasn’t working out at all so getting used to running again was proving to be more difficult than she anticipated. “oh damn. maybe you can post some flyers around town? i’m sure people would help clean up if it meant we can figure out what’s going on quicker?”
