you’re just the last of the real ones.
At the risk of being accused of fauxcern by Maria stans, can I just say how fucking stupid it was that she did not appear in the episode after she and Michael broke up?!? It’s like they really want to hammer home that her only importance revolves around Michael, huh? It was pretty offensive imo. M!luca stans were happier at the end of season one bc she and Michael became a thing, but honestly it was really the same thing then. Maria had two scenes in the s1 finale, and they both revolved around Michael. She had 2 and a half scenes in the s2 finale and same. The half is where we see her being wheeled down the hospital hallway with the blood on her face. But that was barely a scene. It’s pretty frustrating. Obviously, I do not like Michael and Maria together and I’m happy that they broke up, but I don’t want Maria relegated to love interest and thrown aside anytime she’s not one. It’s bullshit and she deserves better.
I know I’m not going to like it and I will be frustrated by it, but I’m sort of curious to see where Michael and Alex end up at the end of this finale.
I’ve hated this “love triangle” from the start because I foresaw the fandom problems from it from moment one but also it still is barely a love triangle to me because “the choice” such as it is, isn’t even there, which I find frustrating. Despite the fact that they’ve been pushing Michael and Maria’s relationship at various points of the season all while having Michael continue to have all of these emotional scenes with Alex, the narrative doesn’t seem to be leading to Michael making any kind of choice between them. They’re still seemingly in the exact same position as they were at the start of this season, except that Michael has started relying on Alex emotionally a little bit more. But even that development doesn’t seem to have spurred in him any kind of emotional revelation or decision.
I just, I fully expect them all to end up in the exact same place they started the season by the end of the finale. I expect yet another Malex sort of emotional break up and for Michael to end the season “choosing” Maria in much the same way he did at the end of last season. I mean, perhaps Michael will express some feelings towards Maria. Maybe the needle will move a fraction forward but overall, I don’t feel like there’s going to be much progress.
Which is maddening. Because I do feel like ultimately, the show will circle back to Michael and Alex being together and if all of their emotional scenes together this season didn’t lead to a reunion, then really, what will? I feel like Alex had one of the clearest character arcs this season, which frankly is still muddy as hell because this show doesn’t even seem to know what a character arc is, but I digress. Alex started the season telling Michael that he didn’t want to be another Manes man in his way and then throughout the season has seemingly learned that okay, maybe all of the Manes men aren’t evil. Maybe he doesn’t have to be in Michael’s way. And the two of them have had scenes together where Michael has learned to rely on Alex emotionally and Alex has been there for him when previously, I don’t know that he knew how to be. And they’ve done sort of yet another arc of Alex coming to terms with who he is and his identity and being confident in himself.
And yet I don’t feel like any of that is going to lead to any kind of Malex reunion in this finale. Despite all of that, it doesn’t seem like that choice is even on the table. I don’t feel like the show is building to Alex telling Michael that he still loves him in the present. I don’t feel like the show is building to Michael telling Alex that he sees that their history doesn’t have to define them and that he’s able to put that aside and be with Alex. I don’t feel like that narrative beat is even remotely close to being presented to us and why? There’s so much there that I feel like has been leading to that this season and yet we’re being presented with a finale where those stakes don’t even feel like they’re on the table.
This is in part due to the fact that I feel like they were supposed to have these other relationships this season that would allow them to make certain progress within themselves to lead to a reunion but which were not really well developed. I mean obviously the Michael and Maria relationship has been more present than the non relationship with Alex and Forrest. But in both cases, it kind of feels like they largely just forgot about that side of things. And maybe it’s just because that’s the way these stories typically go in a season two. Maybe it’s because that’s the way I wanted it to go and I’m disappointed that it’s not. But neither side relationship feels like it has done anything for either character and if it does, if Alex say kisses Forrest finally in the finale, if Michael tells Maria he loves her in the finale, then it will just be starting to get to a place from which maybe they can start working back to Malex. Maybe that’s the plan, but it still feels like they just got lost in their planning this season, surprise surprise, and things got neglected and now have to be pushed into next season.
Overall, I just feel like this thing with Malex has been building all season but it doesn’t feel at all like it’s going to go anywhere or reach any kind of logical climax in the finale. I’d say “prove me wrong show” but I doubt they will.
This is exactly how I feel. It’s like these things are happening but there’s no follow up to it. There’s no fallout. It feels like what’s even the point? If it’s not leading to something emotionally for either of these men, why put them through this? They’re repeating the same end of the first season except we might actually get Alex with somebody too, but it doesn’t really matter because it’s still the same thing and we still know that malex is going to be the ship of the future so why? Why keep this going? Why any of this when it’s ultimately leading nowhere? All of it’s incredibly frustrating. All hat, no cowboy. (Thanks AB @mentally-maladjusted
please for the love of god let Isobel and Maria realise they have MAD chemistry
It’s not that complicated…your in love
The more this show tries to tackle social issues, the more it is clear it’s being written by white women
i have to acknowledge that (as far as i know) there is a woman of color on the writing team who seems very sweet and well-intentioned. however, it’s become painstakingly clear that carina calls the shots and dictates what happens. it’s carina who chose to make noah the bad guy last season, who chose to have flint be a villain this season, and who might possibly set up diego to be a morally grey character as well. all of them are visibly and clearly men of color. that’s not even getting into the other slights against her other characters of color.
another thing: i’m not trying to speak over people of color who find nothing wrong with this show. i’m glad you can enjoy this at face value. however, i’ve spoken to a lot of other fans of color (and even white friends too) who are equally as fed up as i am. there’s so much i want to say, but i don’t even know where to begin.
can y'all help us by signing this petition? albuquerque pride has been controlled by white people pretty much since its formation. its leaders have marginalized black, brown, and indigenous lgbt voices for years, with nonwhite people never having been on the board, causing discussions of racism in the community to be ignored entirely. some members have even openly mocked and harassed poc for bringing up things like BLM and MMIW. its time for change in our community
can we talk about how kyle has chemistry with like everyone on the show except the one character he’s dating
