Gambling debts, piles of useless police notes, a car that worth more as scrap than as a running vehicle, and apparently a small flat with an ongoing allowance in St Petersburg. Later on, Grace is talking about the stars and how important they've been to human cultures for millennia. “What do the stars look like, question?” Rocky wants to know.

There's a disco ball on the Hail Mary. Grace says it's there because it “makes me happy”. “How does it make Grace happy, question?” Rocky wants to know.

Rocky begins to do some research.

It takes Grace a fucking while after getting to Erid to notice that a lot of the gifts he's receiving from grateful Eridians are either a) sparkly, b) incredibly shiny, or c) fitted with lights.

While the last one is obviously a concession for his human light sense, he's confused about the former two. Are Eridian materials usually this shiny? Is there some quality about sparkly or highly polished surfaces that makes them sound better? Or is there something about Eridian geology/metallurgy that makes their materials like this?

He asks Rocky about it.

“Simple. I tell people humans like lots of small lights. Humans are easy to make happy.”

Grace kind of wants to protest that humans are much more complicated than that.

But honestly… it fucking works. Like yeah the polished gemstones, shiny metals and glittery rocks are beautiful. Yes those Christmas lights you put up around the house did markedly improve my mental health, Rocky. Thank you, I hate it.

Grace spends a lot of time trying not to think about whether his species' urge to explore the cosmos (that saved their planet and nearly killed him several times) is tied to the same instinct that made his students like glitter gel pens.

I just have so many feelings about Mother Mary, like it's been living rent free in my mind since I watched a few weeks ago

Like I LOVE the idea that the ghost that haunts both Sam and Mary isn't any grand spirit or a demon, it's just Sam's grief - her anger, and her betrayal and her lost love given a body and sent out to find some sort of absolution because she couldn't carry it in her body any longer without it destroying her. And in a way the ghost is their child, like you can't ignore the way the emergence of it in Sam's nightmare is reminiscent of a miscarriage, or the symbolism of Mary's character being 'Mother Mary' who abandoned her partner and their collaboration while it was still in it's infancy. The ghost is what could have been if they had stayed together. It's the product of them rendered as a still birth, clawing its way from one mother's resolution into it's the open wound of the other's guilt, begging to be seen and mourned.

My only wish is that the timeline was a little shifted. I think 3 days and a few conversations doesn't feel weighty enough for what passed between them, Mary should have had to be there for a few weeks and we should have seen more of her being viscerally haunted in the current time, not just explaining it to Sam in flashbacks, but fuck even like this it still stabs you through the heart.

Every time I think about the whole 'who is telling the truth? Is it Louis, Lestat, Claudia?' debate that goes round and round in circles here, I swear I can hear Rackham's final words in Black Sails, a show which is thematically all about the power of stories and the manipulation of truth:

"A story is true. A story is untrue. As time extends it matters less and less. The stories we want to believe… Those are the ones that survive, despite upheaval, and transition, and progress. Those are the stories that shape history. And then what does it matter if it was true when it was born? It's found truth in its maturity…"

the point is not 'the truth'. There will never be a scene of unvarnished 'truth' in this show waiting like a smoking gun to set the viewer to rights about who was the good guy and who was the bad guy.

This is not a story about the story. This is a story about why the story exists in the first place.

These events happened years ago, the 'truth' has already been swallowed up by time. you might even argue that there is no truth because what each individual believes is it's own truth. it's true lestat was abusive, but it's also true that louis is emotionally manipulative and cruel in ways he hid from claudia. it's true claudia hated lestat but it's also true that proper hatred like that is built out of the betrayal of love and trust. it's true she and louis loved each other even if both of them loved the idea of each other more than the actual person in front of them. it's true louis seeks out art as a form of emotional connection but that his unwillingness to be emotionally vulnerable precludes him from being the creative he so desperately wanted to be so he leaches of the creativity of others. it is true lestat was abused and hurt and shunned by his loved ones but it's also true that his desperation and stunted emotional maturity made him unstable and controlling.

A story is true. A story is untrue. As time extends it matters less and less.
