TL;DR: don't tell your neurotypical management team you're neurodivergent. It will 100% backfire.
If you're neurodivergent and work under a purely neurotypical management team, don't disclose your neurodivergence to them. Just don't do it. Even if you think that it'll help them understand why you work and communicate the way you do.
Made the awful mistake is disclosing to my practice manager that I am on the spectrum, having been diagnosed nearly two years ago. Did it thinking that maybe, JUST MAYBE, she was a reasonable enough human that this would allow her to better understand me.
(Mind you, I had no intentions of ever telling her. My direct supervisor knew and she said she was not going to disclose this to PM, that if I wanted her knowing, it was up to me. I was absolutely fine with her not knowing.)
Nope. Awful mistake. Shit has only gotten worse. I'm pretty certain at this point I am being discriminated against. But I don't have any justifiable proof that'll hold up in court.
So now I'm forced to leave my team, all of whom I adore, to relocate to a different office where, while still under the same management team, I am no longer under the same roof as them, so I can hopefully go back to enjoying my job.
Y'all, I did this in an attempt to be better understood and it absofuckinglutely backfired.
Fortunately, knew direct supervisor has a child who is neurodivergent and she knows I am as well, as I have offered support to her. So this is hopefully going to be good for me. Because I'm terrified I'm going to get fired if I stay where I'm at
Oh, and I can't apply for anything else within the company (I'm in school through them, so I can't exactly leave) until September because of a written warning that followed a verbal warning that I absolutely never should have received in the first place (which would have made the written a verbal. It was a deserved warning. No denying that. The verbal was literally just a manager on a power trip). So before anyone says "just apply for a new job"...I can't.
