âI-Iâm sorry! I didnât mean t-to stare! I-I-I w-was just--â The severely flustered girl, tomato-faced and squeaky-voiced, is flailing her arms desperately, her sketchbook in hand with a half-completed drawing nearly slipping from her fingers.
The squad are finally getting their masks!
//Proper update for anyone still around who follows Sakura: I injured myself back in 2015. Repetitive strain injury to both of my arms. Doctor said Iâd be fine in six weeks if I rested. I wasnât. It was a long 9 months of not knowing what to do and finally getting physiotherapy. Then another year of struggling to get back into school when I left just shy of starting literally the hardest classes in my program. But finally I feel like Iâm in a more comfortable position.

Woodland Kingfisher, Halcyon senegalensis at Marakele National Park, South Africa by Derek Keats on Flickr.
Halcyon
The Halcyon (Kingfisher) is found in Medieval bestiaries as well as Greek legends, and it is said to be a bird that calms storms. It is associated with peace and calmness.
In the midst of winter, when the sea storms are strongest, the halcyon lays its eggs in the sand on the sea shore. For seven days the halcyon hatches the eggs, and for a further seven days it nourishes them. During those fourteen days the sea remains calm, unnaturally for the season. Sailors know that during this time they will not be threatened by storms, and call this the âhalcyon daysâ.
Pliny the Elder includes a description of the halcyon from his Natural History:
Kingfishers are rarely seen except at the setting of the Pleiads and around midsummer and midwinter. The time at which they breed is called the âhalcyon daysâ (dies halcyonides); at this time the sea is calm and navigable, particularly so around the island of Sicily. The build their nests seven days before the shortest day, and lay their eggs seven days after it.
Isidore of Seville also writes a description:
The kingfisher (halcyon) is a sea bird that is named as it were alcyanea (sea foam). It makes its nest in the winter during the calm of the ocean; while it is on its nest the sea grows calm and the winds silent for seven days, so that the very nature of things assists with the production of its young.

We Were There
A 4B pencil was waved back and forth between two fingers and her thumb at high velocity as Sakura glared at the blank sketchbook before her. Sheâd been staring at the taunting white sheets for the last twenty minutes, and no amount of stimming was helping with ideas. With a groan, she rolled off her support mound of pillows and blankets and onto her stomach, grabbing a pillow to rest under her chin.
Her assignment was simple when worded: draw a scene from a fictional world of her own creation. Creating such a world proved much harder. Legs in the air, she kicked them back and forth in frustration. It was her own fault, too. She promised herself sheâd make something new, instead of recycling something from her already pre-made stories and worlds. She just had to make things harder for herself. Why did she hate ease?
She at least narrowed it down to a single genre, taking away possibilities of other genre and sub-genre, though fantasy itself was still pretty broad. She wrote down a single word on the mocking blank paper.
Magic.
That was a good place to start. Her spirits lifting, Sakura continued to write down aspects of this world. The buildings, the streets, the city layout. The people, clothing and technology. All of it needed to be in a world stemming from magic. For ease, sheâd just write it was similar to the real world. Perhaps the cars were powered by magic instead of gas? Was government from the top down dependent on magic? A class system? Meritocracy? Democracy or oppressive?
None of these things were particularly important to the drawing, though Sakura was always meticulous about details. If it helped get her excited for the project, she wouldnât force herself to stop. Poking her feet underneath the remnants of her comfort pile, she pulled the blankets up to her knees, covering her bare legs. It was morning, and if there was nothing to do, Sakura normally didnât change out of her night clothes for a while; today of which consisted of just a long shirt reaching halfway to her knees.
Had she been facing the opposite direction, she would see a strange distortion in her room, as though someone had a smudge on glasses. As she continued to work on her world, the distortion grew larger and more distorted, until slowly fading away to a foreign room. The distortion took an oval shape, nearly the size of a full grown adult. There were no lines indicating it was there, just a seamless end and continuation to this new room.
Allowing her out of his sight was not an option â not for her sake. Something was after her, and it didnât take a genius to uncover that they might not have the very best of intentions.
âSAKURA!â Weaving and dodging, fighting against a current of people, wasnât terribly hard work after a good minute or two making himself appear rather mad, shouting after this girl. It was all he needed to slip through, though, racing after her â but sheâd soon disappeared.
But sheâd been heading in that direction - towards the park. That was the only notable thing over there, wasnât it? Perhaps this was for the best, he could loop âround and try to cut her off down the next block.
And there she was, looking small at the base of a tree.
But she wasnât alone.
Heâd made a move to approach, openly striding across the grass, watching the girl as though she might disappear; he halted, faced with the most bizarre-looking bird, towering tall. Hands rose quickly, âIâm unarmed, Iâm unarmed! I swear, Iâm just here to help!â He squinted, tilting his head to get a better look at the thing, voice softening, âOh⊠you are magnificent, though, look at you! âŠBut somethingâs wrong, isnât it?â
A thought seemed to cross his mind, and his brows rose expectantly. ââŠYouâre tied to her, arenât you? Youâre feeding off of her energy⊠What is it exactly that you want from her, sheâs just aââ
Now, his attention locked onto Sakura. âSakuraâŠâ He crouched quickly, voice low. âSakura, look at me, what is it, whatâs wrong? I can help.â
The large birdâs head reared back when the Doctor started talking to it, as though he had offended it somehow. The feathers all over itâs body raised and it clicked itâs massive beak.
âGo away! Just go away!â It mimicked Sakuraâs whispers. Sakura had been trying to drown out the noise, rocking back and forth in her huddled position. That bird wasnât there. Neither was that strange man, the Doctor.
But she could feel his presence, still. He crouched down beside her, and a shiver ran up her spine. The Doctor didnât touch her, only whispering at her to try and gain her attention. She didnât want to look at him. How did he follow her all the way here, through all the people?
âGo away! Just go away!â The bird screeched again, taking a tentative step toward the Doctor, snapping its massive beak at him. It walked around Sakura, flapping the small, useless wings that were more reminiscent of arms. It snapped at the Doctor, beak clamping down on his suit wherever it could grab and pulled.
Sakura looked up now, grabbing at the Doctorâs arms. She struggled to her feet, keeping to a crouch. There was a lot of noise around them now as the smaller creatures became active again, flitting about in the trees, and occasionally swooped overhead. Her sketchbook was poking out of her hastily zipped backpack, still on the page sheâd been sketching.
âYou go away!â Sakura yelled, causing the large agitated bird to stop. Lowering its head, the massive beak the length of her forearm chattered. It lost colour, fading to translucency and the outline of the creature was more easily seen. With one last shriek, the bird faded into a sketch, the graphite fading as well. The chatter overhead ceased and the dark half-seen things in the trees met the same fate.
Sakura gripped at the sleeves of the Doctorâs suit, lowering her head. âIâm sorry... theyâll be back. They always come back.â

He nodded his head. âYes, Iâm JapaneseâŠâ he said calming down a little..or trying to. He put his snowboard to his side and in the ground and leaned against it.
âsoâŠ.now Iâm trying to figure out how i got here. I was snowboarding with Korokoro, and then suddenly, I ended up here.â he went to point to his guardian ghost who made a small noise in response, though he was uncertain if the other could see her or not.
âIâm afraid I canât help you there.â Sakura said. Of course, considering this city, and Champion down in the states, there were a few possibilities she could think of, however it would be impossible to know for sure unless someone went after him.
She looked in the direction where he was pointing. At first she couldnât see anything but a blurry blob. Squinting her eyes, she willed herself to try and see what it was. Slowly the image came into focus. It was a tiny floating person!
âOh my gosh!â Sakura stared for a few moments, a few questions running through her mind. Though would it be rude? âWh-erm... what is she?â
